I would have to sit down and go back in time for the past 5 years but there is quite a few.
You are going to back to the old logic: become a local/regional success and that tranlsates to nationwide success. that doesn't apply these days and even back in a time where record companies specifically looked at that, its still not a guarantee. I don't need to be the king of san diego to get nationwide success. As long as I make hits that get me on heavy rotation, sell major units, that's what matters. I see exactly what you saying but that doesn't apply in this day and age imo.
Drake got nationwide success FIRST. People found out he was from toronto, and now he reps it and toronto loves him for it. My two cents.
