Great convo yall........Mixtapes are like anything else...there all diffrent...some good, some horrible...Personally i think a cats should be able to sell anything if people are willin ta pay for it...why knock tha next mans hustle.

From a musicians perspective though..I think mixtapes are tha shit. I dipped outta music a few years ago and recently got back into it . Mixtapes give me tha opportunity to be way more creative with my art than with a major label release....No BS politics..no sample clearance BS...no payin back advances ect. ect. ect. I think mixtapes are the key to getting control of the hip-hop community back into tha hands of tha people. If tha mixtapes keep commin with good quality both original and jacked material and creative concepts that people are feelin, people will get to tha point that they wont really want to spend money on a major label release when they can get a dope mixtape for free or little money and here an artist spit from tha heart with out havin ta bite his tounge.

Just my opinion...Peace

Okay, peep this idea for a second... why dont someone like E40 gather all the hot Bay artists like Quinn, Mess, Yuk, etc. Now 40 is close to Kay Slay, why dont 40 get the artists I named to do tracks with TALENTED up and comers from the Bay for a Kay Slay mixtape, I mean a REAL mixtape, with exclusives, disses and features. Feature some East Coast heads on there as well (Kay Slay can get em) with some Bay Area production as well as some Crunk and East Coast shit. Throw that shit out in the east as well as here in the west and there is no way that shit would fail at blowin up the Bay.

i feel that, seems to me like all the bay mixtapes are just from people's own camps doing it.. and they just turn out alright.. I think what the bay really needs is a DJ to step it up and rep the bay.. put out all that new and exclusive hot shit out there, like how DJ Smallz does for the south.. really quality mixtapes. that could help the bay with a lot of exposure.. and givin everyone an idea of whats hot in the bay, and maybe jump back on it.. But i just dont see anyone doin that.. DJ Mark 7, ur radio mixes and exclusive shit were tight.. only if u were able to press them and release them like the other DJ's.. because i havent seen anyone else do that.. period, and i think thats really what the bay needs right now..

i think when people say shit is flooded it's cuz they want to make it easier for themselves in this game, which isen't a bad thing, but i believe in the end, THE BEST WILL SHINE. if u hear a cd and it's hella wack, then u should feel good if your cd SHITS on thiers. the better cd will prevail, if u don't believe in your shit, then that's on u. if they promoting more than u, and their cd is weak, then that is your fault your not out there promoting harder than they are. for example with hoops: hella people play basketball, and u don't hear pro prospects or future nba'ers saying people should stop playing basketball cuz they wack? it's the people with the competitive drive and hard work that will make the nba, and it will keep the weak players out. i see it the same in the music biz. just tryin to give another perspective from what i see.........

^nice post....it's so missunderstood in the bay though, they'd probably treat Mark7 like the cat known as Block Report and say he's making money off everyone and gettin over....it's strange like that.

you talkin bout dude that had a few comps full of stolen tracks and was sellin em?

a few mixtapes....yea. See the thing of it is....Mark does these all the time but doesn't sell them and what Sandman is saying would help is if he did press them up. Well, the only problem is....I can bet 70% of the artists on them mixes he does wouldn't want him to and would want bread if he did so which in the end just don't make it worth the djay's time or effort cause it's too costly....he'd be helpin the artist spread especially if he had a nice name which Mark does and with my help it will get bigger and IS getting bigger.

Djay's should be the one's breakin records & new hot artists to the masses and it's a lost art now to alot of artists/labels out there. They are so concerned that someone is always taking their music and stealing from them that they are outing the people who they should be embracing....the "mixtape" djay's. Why do you think I refuse to drop a mixtape without a djay's help? Cause he can get it to the right folks, get it heard and make this thang official...and we can help each other. I don't know, I don't wanna go so far as to say the way I feel about the mixtape game is 100% right but...I feel what I am saying has alot of sense to it and it could help if used the correct way.

Trust me I turn down mixtapes every week & why? Cause it's some label, some rapper or some internet site saying...."submit a song and it will be good promotion, we'll help you spread...it's free download". wtf? is you kidding? That ain't NO mixtape....where the Djay at? Where is he gonna spin this thang at? How many mixtapes has this Djay done? None of those can be answered cause they don't have one main ingredient.....a "DJAY".

just my thoughts....keepin the topic alive....good food for the brain.

yeah, and things like this is what holds the bay back.. its terrible.. its like the bay slightly lost its shine since 95'.. now they tryin to get every buck they can and chargin a grip.. rather then looking at the bigger picture and tryin to unite to have everyone blow again.. kinda like the unity of the south now..

Exactly Sand...cats wanna go charge $300+ per verse cause they were featured on 2 albums that sold 200 copies. A lot of cats in the bay are greedy as hell, and don't understand what UNITY means. I think once it's realized by these cats comin' up, things will run a lot smoother, but until then it's going to be a shaky ride into the spotlight again. These folks need to understand that, if somebody is promoting you, regardless of how they do it, it's a good thing. People were bootlegging my first album left and right, but I could care less because all they are doing is spreading the word about an unknown artist.

If Mark7 got a hold of some of my songs, and put 'em out on something, even without permission, I'd be thanking him left and right, because to me that is him recognizing what I'm doing and respecting it, can't get mad at that.
