Personally, I fucking hate MIXTAPES. I'd never pay for one of those shits I don't care who puts one out. If, I wanted to hear Lil Jon's beat I'd buy Lil Jon. I don't wanna hear WACK ASS ______ spitting over Jon's shit. Some kats all they do is make MIXED tapes...every fucking 3 weeks _______ has a new Mixed tape. Nigga when the fuck are you gonna drop a decent album cuz the last one SUCKED!!! Another thing they seem like they are for the lazy artist.....who would like to get a quick hustle on. Beat already made it's already a HIT and then here come yo ass....I'mma rap over yo shit cuz it's hot and selling. As a fan I don't respect that shit even from artist I like and have been listening too for years.

Like yall say I have the option to not buy....that's exactly what I do!!!

unfortunately...although your anger I complete understand cause it has very valid points with alot of these artists puttin them out...it don't hold water with the cats & djay's doin them the correct way. they move and move well...and people buy them in stupid amounts these days, like I said maybe not the bay but hit the road and they move like hot cakes. radio djay's i know love them if you can hold water over a platinum beat cause they can blend them over the original and use them on their mixtape shows....hence why alot of stations on the air have what they call "mixtape shows".

lazy artists are giving them bad names and using them to get in the game without puttin in real footwork...like doing real albums at the same time. what can you do....that's the business these days...you gotta just outlast em' like anything else. they'll fade away eventually because they will never be able to answer the age old question of "when is your REAL album coming?"........

monkey see.............

monkey dooooooooooooooooooo.................... and thats about sums it up.. if 50 cent can do it, why cant i!!!!!!!!!!! different folks different strokes. its not in my nature to do what the next nigga does. some may think its trendy, just like the overnight gangsta rappers. niggaz like that just need to get out the way. not directed towards anyone just my opinion. mixtapes should really be a promo item. but who am i to say what. just do your thang and keep it real. cause the ones that arent going to feel it out here in the bay. no more passes for you lil wannabes. we will see............

If their is a demand for it a SMART BUSINESS MAN would make his scratch off of that product and reinvest it into his REAL album. And alot of Bay artist use remake shit on they albums and yall don't get mad at that unoriginal shit..."I Got 5 On It" and we can just go down the line of Bay artist who have done the shit from 40 to 4Tay to EA-Ski to Ant Banks THEY ALL DID IT AND STILL DO IT. The bottom line is make good music and if people want to buy it sell it. A smart artist does what he or she can to get their buzz up and if a mixtape is doing it for you then do it...and do it well. This whole game is based on leaders and followers and the vast majority (including some of yall talkin like yall better then others) are followers of a (say it with me) FORMULA. And right now (business wise) mixtapes are cheep ways to showcase your skills over the beats that "you" are programed to like by the mass media. If it works people follow, thats just the way of the world. People get on here and say "Fuck ____ I am doing something different and then they have the same features on they album as everyone else...." Just my opinion.

i mean i agree wit the mixtapes, although i didn't when they first started to appear like this in the Bay. but that was ultimately because i didn't really understand them, and the ones i was exposed to were being done incorrectly by artists.

but i aint really got a problem wit em, as along as the artists use em as mixtapes, and dont try to promote em like albums and shit.

Once again I can tell this is gonna turn into another "mixtape post" lol....

Ok let's seperate the kinds of mixtapes shall we?

Hot shit mixtapes/blend tapes: Where DJs put unreleased, exclusive or hot shit on a tape, blend it and basically make a party tape. I do this, and I try to put as many Bay Artists on as I can (it's getting easier since I think we're doin better music these days too)

"Jackin" tapes: Where an artist takes beats from various songs and redoes it. THIS is the kind I think has been over-done by the WRONG PEOPLE. Any mixtape that I've done from: Frisco Legends, Playa Rae, Money Tree, 40 Ounce Records etc., have had a GREAT DEAL of time put into mixing and blending....What the WRONG cats are doin is just recording and slappin it on a tape....How is it a mixtape? It aint mixed!

Just my 2 cents

one thing i hate is when artists say, "yeah, im too busy workin on the album, so ima put a a mixtape so people dont have to wait so long." just fuckin work on ur album! mixtapes shouldnt be an excuse for an album to have to take 4 years to drop. id rather have a hot album that took a year than 4 mixtapes in 6 months, and then have to wait another year for the album cuz dood was droppin mixtapes.

I totally agree. Cats been hittin me up askin where I've been and why I haven't dropped shit lately, it's because we're WORKING, we don't want to just slap some shit together and feed it to the public. PLUS, we were busy bustin our asses for our equipment, we aren't about to have another cat produce our shit and then end up selling the same beats to some other cats.

I would rather work for a year and then have some good shit and some good songs to choose from, then give that to the people, so we know it's hot and we know we took our time with it. We recorded our first group project in 5 days, but we're going about 50 songs deep so we can pick what to drop. Some cats asked why we aren't doing mixtapes and it's just because, well, honestly, we don't want to do what everybody else is doing. We'd rather work on all new, original shit for our new projects.

In no way am I knockin' Rae's hustle or anybody else who does Mixtapes the CORRECT way, I just never understood the whole deal behind them. Reason being, too many cats out here are doing it, and I always seem to come across the bullshit mixtape that has no host, or no real mixtape characteristics.

Mark 7, thanks for clarifying everything pimp, I understand now what's goin' on in the mixtape scene...these cats flooding the market with their bullshit just need to stop, kinda like when everybody was doing COMPILATIONS cause they had loot to get features. Ya know what I'm sayin?

Good luck to those doin' this shit right though. As an artist, I appreciate y'all, cause you don't insult the game with bullshit, and that shout includes you Rae, cause I know you're hustlin', just keep doin it, and remain the same.

Mixtapes are promotional tools, doesnt mean you can't sell em, but they should be cheaper than an original album with new music.

Mixtapes are a good way for new artists to get some exposure

Best Mixtape i ever heard is the Assholes By Nature by Trae and Z-Ro from Texas.

Exactly, now my point of the post was exactly that. Everybody and their momma has a "jackin" tape and hasn't even put out any real product. Not only is 3 out of 4 muthafuckas in the Bay rapping....all three of them muthafuckas have mixtapes jackin tight beats but rappin bout bullshit. My approach to mixtapes is I try to make it a new song and not borrow from the original. I don't want to steal the previous artists CONCEPT and BEAT too! LOL. Thank you Mark, you have spelled out what I was saying.
