It's all rooted in self-hatred. Sur, Norte, Crip, Blood, whatever the fuck, and it's embedded itself in our culture and neighborhoods. We spend way too much time trying to be hard and getting hood fame instead of trying to make life better for us, our family and our neighborhoods..

the whole 'recent immigrant vs Chicano' is probably the same up North as it is Down here in Southern Ca. Depending on the area and the hood, some hoods have more 'recent immigrants' from the hood and some dont. For example, hoods in places like the downtown area of Los have a lot more recent immigrants from Mexico, C. America, S. America than hoods on the ES, or Sgv, or out in the IE.

Surenos "hold it down" in the Bay Area because they are actually present in the Bay Area. You don't see nortenos holding it down in southern California because there's very few of them down there.
The reason is fairly simple. Field work brings southerners up north. Nothing really lures northerners down south. If the situations were reversed and most of the agricultural work was in southern California, you'd likely see a reversal in the presence of the gangs in both regions. In other words, you'd see nortenos in the south, but few surenos in the north.
Obviously there isn't much agricultural work in the SF metro area, but the existence of such work is the reason they are prevalent in the region.

They are usually descendants of people with southern roots that migrated north for work. As they settle in, the newer generations are born in the north, but are influenced by their older relatives who have southern roots.
That is the most logical case for northern born and raised surenos, but most surenos up north migrate from the south either for work or to be with their relatives who previously migrated north for work.
