This movie is so funny, yet so sad on so many levels. But on it’s strength the main characters have gotten appearances on Letterman and Family Guy and their own internet TV shows as well as other movie deals.

American Movie (1999)

On the northwest side of Milwaukee, Mark Borchardt dreams the American dream: for him, it's making movies. Using relatives, local theater talent, slacker friends, his Mastercard, and $3,000 from his Uncle Bill, Mark strives over three years to finish "Covan," a short horror film. His own personal demons (alcohol, gambling, a dysfunctional family) plague him, but he desperately wants to overcome self-doubt and avoid failure. In moments of reflection, Mark sees his story as quintessentially American, and its the nature and nuance of his dream that this film explores.

Surrounded by controversy when it came out and banned for years by Blockbuster this movie is fantastic! Nearly two decades later you can finally find it at Blockbuster. Almost always over looked by Scorsese’s general public type fans – film admirers consistantly rank it among his best.

The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)

The carpenter Jesus of Nazareth, tormented by the temptations of demons, the guilt of making crosses for the Romans, pity for men and the world, and the constant call of God, sets out to find what God wills for him. But as his mission nears fulfillment, he must face the greatest temptation: the normal life of a good man. Based, not on the Gospels, but on Nikos Kazantzakis' novel of the same name.

I guess you could call me a David Lynch fan. I like most of his movies, some people are die hard Lynch fans that love everything he makes, I can do without some or find some just so-so. But this is by far my favorite David Lynch film. Critics always rave about Blue Velvet, but to me this beats it every time.

Crispin Glover as Cousin Dell has to be one of my favorite characters ever.

Strange that I’ve recommended 2 Cage movies, yet don’t really like him individually.

Along with Bad Lieutenant this has to be the most perfect movie, of my recommendations thus far, for members of the Siccness to see.

Wild at Heart (1990)

After breaking parole for self defensive manslaughter, Sailor Ripley and his girlfriend Lula Fortune head down the highway for sunny California. Lula's mother sends out a private detective and a hitman after them. Sailor and Lula encounter an assortment of extremely bizarre "people" while discovering hidden secrets about one another.

"It’s like a big, dark, musical comedy.’"

Peter Travers wrote in Rolling Stone magazine, "Starting with the outrageous and building from there, he ignites a slight love-on-the-run novel, creating a bonfire of a movie that confirms his reputation as the most exciting and innovative filmmaker of his generation."

Jonathan Rosenbaum wrote, "When it comes to images of evil, corruption, derangement, raw passion and mutilation (roughly in that order), Wild at Heart is a veritable cornucopia."

This may be the most obscure & hard for you to swallow recomendation I've made yet. The movie is Black and White and subtitled for those of you automatically turned off by that. The pacing of some segments is very slow. I am biased towards this movie due to my love of Cuba. For the TRUE movie buff.

I Am Cuba/Soy Cuba (1964)

Four vignettes in Batista's Cuba dramatize the need for revolution; long, mobile shots tell almost wordless stories. In Havana, Maria faces shame when a man who fancies her discovers how she earns her living. Pedro, an aging peasant, is summarily told that the land he farms has been sold to United Fruit. A university student faces down a crowd of swaggering U.S. sailors and then watches friends shot by police when they try to distribute a pro-Castro leaflet. The war arrives on the doorstep of peasants Mariano, Amelia, and their four children when Batista's forces bomb the hills. Mariano wants peace, so he seeks out the guerrillas to join the fight.

"It is a film for movie buffs and movie makers; an exhilarating reminder of what can be achieved with a hand-held camera and some black-and-white film. " - LA Times

I'm going to check out that David lynch film it seems coo. Bad lieutenant has got to be one of my favorite movies I've owned that movie for a few years and always bust it out when the homies are over. I don't know if this has been posted yet but you guys should check out The Proposition. not your average cowboy movie but it's great.

The Proposition

Rural Australia in the late nineteenth century: Capt. Stanley and his men capture two of the four Burns brothers, Charlie and Mike. Their gang is held responsible for attacking the Hopkins farm, raping pregnant Mrs. Hopkins and murdering the whole family. Arthur Burns, the eldest brother and the gang's mastermind, remains at large has and has retreated to a mountain hideout. Capt. Stanley's proposition to Charlie is to gain pardon and - more importantly - save his beloved younger brother Mike from the gallows by finding and killing Arthur within nine days

Dead Man

Dead Man is the story of a young man's journey, both physically and spiritually, into very unfamiliar terrain. William Blake travels to the extreme western frontiers of America sometime in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Lost and badly wounded, he encounters a very odd, outcast Native American, named "Nobody," who believes Blake is actually the dead English poet of the same name. The story, with Nobody's help, leads William Blake through situations that are in turn comical and violent. Contrary to his nature, circumstances transform Blake into a hunted outlaw, a killer, and a man whose physical existence is slowly slipping away. Thrown into a world that is cruel and chaotic, his eyes are opened to the fragility that defines the realm of the living. It is as though he passes through the surface of a mirror, and emerges into a previously-unknown world that exists on the other side.

Not much to say about this film other than it is a must see for anyone who claims to be among, at least, the most basic of movie fans. One of my favorite, if not most favorite, films of the era and genre.

The Maltese Falcon (1941)

In 1539, the Knight Templars of Malta, paid tribute to Charles V of Spain, by sending him a Golden Falcon encrusted from beak to claw with rarest jewels-----but pirates seized the galley carrying this priceless token and the fate of the Maltese Falcon remains a mystery to this day

Sam Spade is a partner in a private-eye firm who finds himself hounded by police when his partner is killed whilst tailing a man. The girl who asked him to follow the man turns out not to be who she says she is, and is really involved in something to do with the 'Maltese Falcon', a gold-encrusted life-sized statue of a falcon, the only one of its kind.

Classic! Superior in every way to the re-make.

The Manchurian Candidate (1962)

In Korea in 1952, a US Army patrol is ambushed by Communist soldiers. A year later the squad, having escaped, returns to the US, where Staff Sergeant Raymond Shaw is to receive the Medal of Honor for single-handedly saving the lives of the squad. Shaw is the son of Elanor Iselin, wife of US Senator John Yerkes Iselin, and Mrs. Iselin turns the return of Raymond into a political rally that brings out building hostility between son and mother over the ambitions of Johnny Iselin. But there is more involved, for the actions of Raymond Shaw are not what everyone believes they are, and the nightmares of a US Army officer, Bennett Marco, leads to investigation of Raymond that unlocks a stunning political conspiracy that sweeps up Johnny and Elanor Iselin, and which only Bennett Marco can possibly stop.

Good Actors, Good Story, Good effects/Set Design, Good Director = Good Movie. I recomend the directors cut - it is really easy to find. Coming out soon is the Final Cut 5 dics DVD set. Check it out if you haven't seen it. It is a must see and a must have in the collection. Most recently ranked 97 on AFI's top 100 films list.

Blade Runner (1982)

Los Angeles, 2019: Rick Deckard of the LPD's Blade Runner unit prowls the steel & micro-chip jungle of the 21st century for assumed humanoids known as 'replicants'. Replicants were declared illegal after a bloody mutiny on an Off-World Colony, and are to be terminated upon detection. Man's obsession with creating a being equal to himself has back-fired.

In a survey conducted by the UK newspaper The Guardian in 2004, 60 scientists selected this movie as the best science fiction movie of all time, just ahead of 2001: A Space Odyssey

Romper Stomper 1992

Russel Crowes first movie. I just watched a week ago for the first time. I thought it was pretty good.

Nazi skinheads in Melbourne take out their anger on local Vietnamese, who are seen as threatening racial purity. Finally the Vietnamese have had enough and confront the skinheads in an all-out confrontation, sending the skinheads running. A woman who is prone to epileptic seizures joins the skins' merry band, and helps them on their run from justice, but is her affliction also a sign of impurity?
