I AGREE...BUT THE FACT IS U CANT CREATE A TRUE FAN BASE BY JUST MAKING SONGS.I HAD THE PLEASURE OF STARTING OUT ON A TRUE FUNCTIONAL LABEL AND MERCHANDISING AND SHOWS WERE ALWAYS PART OF AN ARTISTS' PROGRESS.TIMING IS ALSO VERY KEY IN THIS BIZ.
JUST CURIOUS....WHAT ARTIST DID U WORK 4 THAT MADE $30,000 A SHOW?
Good question big bro cause I would love to get that a show!!!!

i saw a quote on twitter ..some semi famous rapper, was clowning but there was a lot of truth in it..
dude said "IF YOU ARE A RAPPER AND YOU HAVENT BEEN FLOWN SOMEWHERE TO GET PAID IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS, YOU NEED TO RETHINK YOUR CHOICE OF CAREER"

i think it was @DaRealYungBerg or Jibbs or someone like that..
but still.

2 ME,LOCAL RAPPERS ARE PEOPLE WHO NEVER LEAVE WHERE THEY'RE FROM 2 TRY 2 EXPAND THEIR HUSTLE. IVE NEVER REALLY HAD A REASON 2 DEFINE WHAT A REGIONAL RAPPER IS.I THINK ITS EASIER 2 CLASSIFY THEM AS ASPIRING/PROFESSIONAL RAPPERS BECUZ THEN THERE IS NOT MUCH 2 DEBATE...I AM AN ARTIST WHO BELIEVES FOOTWORK IS IMPORTANT AND IF U ARE NOT "mainstream"...THEN ITS YOUR JOB 2 CREATE YOUR OWN INDUSTRY. MAYBE THATS THE EXEC IN ME TALKIN THO.LMGGAO

@tay and ap9:
there's two artists i've worked with that can sell out 3,000 cap. venues @ $20 admission from irvine to amsterdam. they weren't rappers, they're electronic music DJs. but they gettin it and there's universally applicable lessons for any type of artist in their stories.

i work with another rapper who tours north america and europe regularly and has had a deal w/an indie label and a release with international distribution within the last 2 years. he's not making 30k a show but he's working his ass off and getting it and the people around him maximize every one of his opportunities from product endorsements to show guarantees.

WELL LETS NOT BASE OUR STATEMENTS ON PROJECTION PLANS AND TRY 2 STAY AS GROUNDED AND SOLID AS POSSIBLE...NOBODY I KNOW PERSONALLY{including the artists i know who have had deals such as E-40} SELLS ENOUGH RECORDS OR HAS ENOUGH STARPOWER 2 ASK 4 $30,000 A SHOW.(especially 180×)imo
I THINK WHEN WE START THROWING ALL THESE MEGASTAR EXPECTATIONS OUT THE WINDOW,WE CAN MAKE PROGRESS AND REALLY START RESPECTING THE ARTISTS AND MUSIC THAT DESERVES 2 BE RESPECTED.WE WERE ALL CREATED EQUAL.I ADMIT I HAVE WATCHED DRUGS TURN SOME OF MY FRIENDS AND FAM INTO WASHED UP RAPPERS BUT I AM ONLY ONE PERSON AND WHAT I FEEL AND BELIEVE IS ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF WHAT REALLY MATTERS.I THINK WE ALL SHOULD BE HUMBLE ENOUGH 2 ACCEPT THAT AS TRUTH. EVEN THE SUGE KNIGHTS OF THE WORLD HAVE NO POWER IN WHAT GOES ON IN THE INDUSTRY ANYMORE.SO INSTEAD OF CHASIN FAR-FETCHED DREAMS,I JUST WORK 2 MY OWN SATISFACTION AND LET THE LAWS OF NATURE DO THE REST. ME BEING ABLE 2 MAKE A RED CENT OFF MY TALENT IS A BLESSING. I WAS ONCE TOLD 2 NEVER STOP WORKING SO I WOULD NEVER HAVE TIME 2 COMPLAIN.WITH THAT MENTALLITY....THE SKY IS STILL THE LIMIT.1

comparing aspiring local rappers to traveling electronic dj's is so unfair.. lol
DJ's will always win that battle.
them guys are booked by the YEAR....
LA Vegas Miami Chicago Ibiza Barcelona London Abu Dhabi
you look at their schedule it reads like a vacation itinerary.

i remember when Paul Oakenfold was pullin down $100,000 gigs with tour riders that would make Mariah blush (5 star hotel room a must, etc) and that was ten years ago but i do know guys like Kaskade and Deadmau5 get $20-30K a gig today.

theres like 20 DJs gettin paid fat to every 1 rapper gettin paid fat

So what is success in the industry? I don't really get these washed up tags. 4-Tay dropped a CD this year that was probably his best in a decade and a top 10 seller in the bay right. He's not going gold anymore, but I hardly consider that washed up. I know rappers who only sell a couple thousand at most, book some shows, and generally can't make a living off rap alone so they keep a day job. They still don't lose money doing what they love and have a loyal, if smaller, fan base. Wouldn't call that washed up myself. How much does a rapper have to make to be considering successful? If he's paying all his bills and making at least what he would doing a 9 to 5 or more then who's to say he is washed up just because he isn't breaking a million or half a mil or whatever arbitrary number out there? And who's better off? A rapper who signed a "million dollar deal" and was hot for a year tops or someone who has had a steady, albeit smaller, grind for 10-20 years?

If I sell 5,000 CDs at $8 each to the distribution........ You do the math!!! I'm winning!! Especially if I got hooked up on studio time and beats for nothin and only spent $5,000 on promotions.... I'm winning!!! It's hard for rappers with a name to even sell 2,000 CDs now adays that's why we sell tingtones, and downloads on the Internet!!! I bet the rappers who people say are washed up would out sell these new independent rappers!!! If spice 1 drops a fresh brand new album spitten hard like we all know he's capable of....... He'd be a problem for niggaz!!!
