Giants release Ramon Ramirez and Wilson Valdez

San Francisco released a pair of players who had opt-out clauses in their minor-league contracts, cutting loose reliever Ramon Ramirez and infielder Wilson Valdez.

Valdez is a pretty typical utility infielder–although for a brief, hilarious time some Phillies fans loved him–but Ramirez has actually been a solid reliever with a 3.32 ERA in 438 career innings through age 30. He struggled with the Mets last season, but a lot of teams could do a lot worse in a middle relief gig.

Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com reports that the Giants would like to re-sign Ramirez to a minor-league deal that doesn’t contain an opt-out clause if he can’t find a better situation elsewher

Giants signed C Buster Posey to an eight-year, $159 million extension with a $21.4 million club option for 2022.
The deal is being added to his $8 million contract for this season, so he'll receive a total of $167 million and will be under team control for at least nine more seasons. The contract, which also contains a no-trade clause, buys out Posey's three remaining arbitration years, as well as at least five free agency seasons. The reigning National League MVP, Posey bounced back from a horrific injury in 2011 to bat .336/.408/.549 with 24 homers and 103 RBI last season.
