Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the team has had discussions about Ichiro Suzuki.
"He is a guy we discussed last year, and of course he's been in our discussions at times this (offseason)," Bochy said. The Giants could sign Ichiro to replace or share time with Gregor Blanco in left field, but he doesn't appear to be a great fit. The 39-year-old seems likely to return to the Yankees.

Giants near deal with Japanese infielder Kensuke Tanaka

From John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle comes word that the Giants are “closing in on signing” Japanese second baseman Kensuke Tanaka to a minor league contract. The deal is expected to include an invitation to spring training, where Tanaka will be in the running for a utility job.

The 31-year-old batted .300/.350/.363 with three home runs, 14 doubles, three triples and 32 RBI in 505 plate appearances last season for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Japan’s Pacific League.

Tanaka also stole 13 bases in 22 attempts.

Hunter Pence gets $13.8 million to avoid arbitration with Giants

Shortly after the season ended there was some speculation that the Giants would non-tender Hunter Pence rather than pay him a big salary via arbitration following a down year.

General manager Brian Sabean quickly shot that notion down, making it clear he wanted Pence back in 2013, and now we see the price tag: Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that Pence and the Giants have avoided arbitration with a one-year, $13.8 million deal.

That means the Giants feared he’d get more than that via an actual arbitration hearing and as crazy as that sounds it was very possible considering Pence was paid $10.4 million last season and … well, that’s just how arbitration works.

Of course, there was nothing forcing the Giants to keep Pence after he hit just .253 with a .319 on-base percentage and .425 slugging percentage in 160 games last year and it’s hard to imagine him getting $13.8 million per season on the open market. San Francisco’s commitment is only one season, which is a key factor, but even if he bounces back to pre-2012 production (.293 AVG, .825 OPS from 2009-2011) it’s still debatable if Pence is worth that money. He’ll be a free agent next offseason.

Giants avoid arbitration with MVP Buster Posey

What does a 25-year-old reigning MVP get in his first year of arbitration eligibility?

Apparently $8 million, which is what Buster Posey and the Giants settled on for a one-year contract to avoid arbitration.

As a “Super Two” player Posey has four years of arbitration eligibility rather than the usual three, so he remains under the Giants’ control through 2016.

The one-year deal is mostly just a formality to avoid a hearing, but Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com writes that the two sides will probably talk about a multi-year deal at some point before spring training begins.

Sergio Romo agrees to two-year contract with Giants

The Giants have wrapped up their final arb. case.

According to beat writer Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, closer Sergio Romo agreed Wednesday evening to a two-year pact that will cover his final two years of arbitration eligibility.

No word yet on the exact financial layout.

Romo posted a dominant 1.79 ERA and 0.85 WHIP over 69 appearances last season, fanning 63 batters and issuing only 10 walks in 55 1/3 innings. He was also a force in the playoffs, racking up three saves against the Tigers in the Giants’ World Series sweep.

The 29-year-old right-hander boasts a 2.20 career ERA, a 0.88 career WHIP and a 10.7 career K/9 through his first five major league seasons. He will be eligible for free agency heading into the 2015 campaign.

White Sox acquire Conor Gillaspie from Giants

San Francisco and Chicago swapped minor leaguers, with the Giants sending former first-round pick Conor Gillaspie to the White Sox for Jeff Soptic.

Gillaspie has had a few brief stints with the Giants, including six games last season, but at age 25 the third baseman projects as a potential bench player after hitting .289 with an .815 OPS in 232 games at Triple-A. He’s out of minor-league options, so the White Sox have to keep him around or expose him to waivers again before Opening Day.

Soptic was the White Sox’s third-round pick in 2011 and spent last season at low Single-A, throwing 43 innings with a 5.40 ERA and 36/29 K/BB ratio as a 21-year-old.
