Mark DeRosa told Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News that "it’s just a matter of when" before he undergoes surgery on his left wrist.
The good news is that he might not need it right away. DeRosa was told by Dr. Thomas Graham that he hadn’t reached the point where playing could risk a full tendon rupture. "He said it comes down to pain tolerance and effective play," said DeRosa. He was recently given a second cortisone injection and wants to get in a minor league game soon. He hopes to be activated from the disabled list as soon as June 4.
Jeremy Affeldt (hamstring) threw a light bullpen session on Friday.
"Jeremy's coming around," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He feels much better. Hard to say what day [he'll return]. It could be [Saturday] -- that's how much he's improved -- or it could be a couple more days." Affeldt hasn't pitched since Sunday due to a strained left hamstring.
