Giant reward: World champs receive bonus of $317,631 apiece

Baseball players always profess that the ring is the thing, but you have to think they also get pretty fired up for the day their playoff share arrives in the mail.

Of course they do. This year's champion — the San Francisco Giants — will each receive an amount that's just south of the minimum player's salary. For guys like Pablo Sandoval(notes) ($465K salary in 2010) and Dan Runzler(notes) ($400K), that's a pretty significant chunk of change.

From the Associated Press:

A full postseason share on the World Series champion San Francisco Giants was worth $317,631, down from a record $350,030 for the New York Yankees in 2009.

The commissioner's office said Monday a full share on the losing Texas Rangers was $246,280, down from $265,358 for the NL champion Philadelphia Phillies last year.

The players' pool was $54.9 million, a drop from a record $59.1 million last year. It includes 60 percent of the ticket money from the first three games of each division series, and the first four games of each league championship series and the World Series.

A few things: CNBC's Darren Rovell reports that Bengie Molina(notes) will receive prorated portions of the shares he earned as a member of both the Rangers and Giants this season. Meanwhile, the general pool didn't rival last year's because the capacities of the involved stadiums this year were smaller.

Also, I love that the players are only allowed to take from the bare minimum — as if they'd throw games to get a couple of extra dollars tacked onto their checks — and that even the second-place teams get a tiny taste. (Don't spend that $10,119 consolation prize all in one place, San Diego Padres!)

Pretty weak of Sabean for not going after Uribe....

3 year 21 mill deal for Uribe? not bad for him...bet Sabean could have gotten him for 15 mill 2 years...

Haha i'm with you Ironlungs, but that's where i'm worried. Replaced by who? Tejada? Fuck Tejada! This team will end up losing like 35+ homeruns with Uribe gone being replaced by some scrub and Derosa replacing Burrell in left field.

Rays Moving Closer To Trading Bartlett
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 29 at 5:40pm CST]

The Rays are moving closer to trading Jason Bartlett, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The reporters’ sources say the Dodgers’ deal with Juan Uribe accelerated trade talks. The Cardinals, Padres, Giants, Orioles and Pirates have all expressed interest in Bartlett, who is arbitration eligible for the third and final time this offseason.

The Rays appear to be looking for bullpen help in any trade involving Bartlett. If they do trade the 31-year-old, they’ll likely replace him with Reid Brignac, who played 50 games at short in 2010 and posted a higher OPS than Bartlett (.692 vs. .675).

Bartlett slumped to .254/.324/.350 in 2010 after an All-Star season in 2009, but his career line (.281/.345/.385) suggests he's capable of more offense. He earned $4MM in 2010 and will likely earn over $5MM through arbitration in 2011.

Giants Contact Jeter’s Agent

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 29 at 5:16pm CST]

The Giants have contacted Casey Close, the agent for Derek Jeter, according to Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal. However, the Giants are not seriously pursuing Jeter and there’s no evidence that a team other than the Yankees is bidding on the shortstop.

A rival executive tells Costa that he fully expects Jeter to re-sign in New York, even though his representatives are in contact with other teams. The Giants, who recently lost Juan Uribe to the rival Dodgers, are focusing on finding a shortstop. Though it's highly unlikely that the Giants sign Jeter, they do have a connection to him. When the Yankees drafted Jeter in 1992, current Giants GM Brian Sabean was their vice president of player development.

Jeter and the Yankees are far apart, though the team has made multiple proposals. GM Brian Cashman encouraged Close to talk to other clubs and it appears that the agent has acted accordingly.

Best thing that can happen is we get a young, fast SS who plays great defense, can get on base a lot and steal bases. There's no other SS out there for us with pop and versatility like Uribe. We pray Panda loses 40 lbs, gets back to 09 form and Belt comes up beasting. I don't know wtf will happen in left field, but I don't like Dewrista and if Belt comes up Huff can play left.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear we signed Tejada. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

I dont understand all the hate towards Uribe dodgers offered him over twice what he made with the Giants. Hes a large over 30 year old shortstop who hit 248 last year. Did you really want Sabean to pay him 7 mill a year for 3 years.. Cmon its a no brainer from the giants standpoint and Uribes standpoint. Only losers are the Dodgers and that goes without saying..

I'm hoping that JJ Hardy is available now that the Twins picked up Nishioka. If not, we just need a stop-gap type SS until Brandon Crawford gets enough AAA at-bat's (possibly by June-July).
