1).Why do you think they get money at shows?... performance money is only a small portion of it. The bulk comes from merchandise...t-shirts, c.d.'s, ect. Not Mp3's.

2).You only get publishing money when your music is played publicly. I.E.; radio play (which damn near no bay artits get), T.V. (which no bay area artits get), and movie soundtracks(must I continue?), ect.

So like I said the majority of it comes from Physical c.d.'s! If you want to hear bay music in the future, then support!

I still download Jay-z, and other BIG time mutha fucka's... but not this bay shit!
This is flawed logic right here. There are plenty of rappers that dont have "official" albums, but make a LIVING off of doing shows night after night.

So, again, physical CD's dont DIRECTLY result in "getting paid". The same way people dont die from smoking cigarette's.

I honestly couldn't tell you the last rap cd I bought or rap cd I heard about that I was excited about. If my memory serves me correctly, the last cd I bought was Messy Marv, Bandanas, Tattoo's... in 2005. Rap music sucks now. I mainly listen to R&b, Smooth Jazz and old school stuff. The only cd's I've bought have been Kem, Will Downing, Anita Baker, stuff like that... It's the quality, not the availability of free downloads that makes me not listen to rap

My preference has always been CD,s and will always be CD,s . CD ,s have more of a traditional and longevity feel to it . you can always look back and remember a Cd which you got ten years ago you can remember the shop you went to get that Cd etc etc ... where as these days all this itune motherfuhking bullshit is killing the tradition of hip hop . It also shows how rappers these days have gone lazy and would rather push a CD over the internet then in real life ...... thats why most of these rappers these days that have emerged over the last few years are fucking pre maddonas .

LOL!!!!! Talk about contradiction. You might as well download Bay artist too half stepper! You are the main reason majors won't give these Bay artist advance money. Nor sign them cause people like you who rip off majors. The majors won't take the risk of putting money behind any "NEW" as in, new to the world Bay artist and try and break him since they know established artist aren't racking numbers like they should!
lolwut

What is your logic that by him downloading mainstream artists, and supporting local, that HE is the reason the bay doesn't get any rappers signed to majors? You're really implying that the reason that bay rappers don't get deals is because, we don't buy enough major releases? :ermm:

Implying? That's exactly what I'm saying. Not just Bay artist, but independent artist in general.

Check this out though. I'm seriously playing devil's advocate. And I seriously give 2 shits about it. Reason being that nobody in here is right (including myself) & while we sit online and bitch at each other on the Siccness, we should take what we need in here & be out in the field making the change.

Bottom line is make good music and the rest will fall into place.

No matter what type of music / rap you do, make the best music you can. There is a fan base for every style of music / rap, so quit pointing fingers.

We're seriously getting nowhere in this thread. Everybody thinks they're right and although there are valid points, it's not solving the problem.

I may not agree with everybody in here & vice versa, but if each person is content in how & what they're doing, so be it.

Next thread: Who still buy's cassettes? :cheeky:

This is why I asked what was your logic on it while you changed the subject lol. So again, how does buying independent releases in lieu of mainstream major artists, keeping independents from getting major? I know you aren't right, or that I'm not right either, was merely asking what your logic was on that statement. I know I'm not gonna get the end all be all answer, simply asking your opinion on it. How was the guy you responded to keeping indie acts down by supporting them instead of the mainstream artists? How would buying whatever the mainstream is pumping out , get our own indie artist deals, if we're gladly buying up whatever is thrown at us? Again, just asking YOUR OPINION on it.

My opinion: First and foremost (and we're going into another topic here that's going another 20 pages LOL!)

Back in the day when Cd's / music was being sold we all went and bought hard copies. Be it mainstream or be it independent whatever genre of music.

Major labels were signing independents left and right. I myself was dealing with Koch (in 2000 - 2002) and thought it was outrageous (hard to believe). I never got to sign, but Cliff Cultri from Koch (at the time...lost contact & unaware of where he may be now) called me on a regular basis asking if my album was done etc. Advance money was being handed to new acts on the fact that albums sold. The majors could break a new artist and people would buy the album. Three to four album deals were being given at the time. Independent Bay Area distributors were making money as well. Units were being sold on the very day of release.

Now with the internet and all the downloading the majors are not selling units. Not just rap music, that's where a lot of people are failing to see. It's the music business as a whole. All genres. Bay area distributors folded etc.

The "established" artist are not going gold or platinum the first week anymore. Why? Due to downloading and people getting it for free. No money generates and the majors are losing money. Therefore, it trickles down to the new independent coming in with perhaps good music, but due to the majors losing money, they can't afford to put money behind an unknown artist when the "established artist" is not selling units. Be it hard copies, digital etc. The independents are turned away and forced to push for themselves as they have been. Limiting that nation / worldwide exposure.

Why do you think the game has come back to the basics? By choice of the independents? It's due to lack of funds made by the majors. Granted that they still make money to stay in business, but they've (like the artist) have gotten spoiled to where they're used to making X amount of dollars. And that's not happening anymore. Everybody has taken a pay cut.

Labels like Loud Records had to close. Suave House etc. Which are now making a snail pace comeback.

So! When people like bayhead think they're doing a justice to independents by downloading mainstream music, is actually doing more harm than good to the smaller independent companies like myself and independents everywhere.

Remember, shit rolls downhill and everybody get's it in the end.

Then again, like I said, pirates are not going to stop. The higher the technology codes etc. There is always somebody who designs a program to rip it out. This shit has been going on since people were dubbing VHS tapes.

Take it with a grain of salt. It is what it is. Pick it out, find a loop hole that will justify your feelings whatever, whatever... it's just my humble opinion.

Yeah I'm not with the downloading business myself. If I want a movie I'll go buy it from Fry's or catch it on Cable/Demand.

With music, I'll hit up Rasputin's mayne. My brother downloads songs off of the internet and then puts them on a CD for me and they sound low when I listen to them in the house or in my car.
tell u bro to say away from the 128 kbs.... lol

im a download junkie... fuck limewire and shit... its all about the blogs and messege boards. tons of them out there. rar files! 320kbs!

i still buy used cds @ dimples. Only used! then create my mp3s @ 320kbs baby all day every day.

u get laughed at for playing cds these days. I hear it from my staff @ work. all them kids are 19-21 years of age
