I still buy cd's because I know it is the main way artists get paid...and without them getting paid, there would be no more music!
CORRECTION:
The main way any artist get's paid is through gig's (shows). No artist is going to get rich just selling hard copy Cd's. They're longevity is through royalties with ASCAP, BMI etc.

No artist should worry about just selling hard copy Cd's. If your paperwork is straight (Meaning real business paperwork / publishings etc.) that artist is going to get paid from iTunes, Rhapsody etc. per download etc.

If somebody adds your song to their project and you registered your song, guess what? Your going to be paid for every copy that album sells.

All this sell physical Cd's to support an artist is B.S. If that artist has his paperwork right as he / she should and dotted all his I's and crossed his T's he / she will make money.

It's funny how a lot of artist focus on the amount of Cd sales and equal that in dollar signs. Yet, they never worry about the money that can be made if your song makes it to a actual movie / soundtrack etc. There is money to be made and have that money keep coming in long after you retire.

Since napster, I rarely purchased CDs. Sometime I would to support my favorite artist. But lately hip hop albums have nothing but 2 or 3 album worthy songs. Buying CD's is like buying a bag of some purple dyed bammer. Last album I bought that was good all the way through was Get Rich Or Die Tryin.......

@GEMINI

YOU ARE SPEAKING FROM A MAJOR LABEL PERSPECTIVE AND NONE OF THESE BAY ARTISTS HAVE MAJOR DEALS...SO WHO DO U KNOW THAT COLLECTS ROYALTY CHECCS??? MY SONS' MOM GETS MORE ROYALTY CHECCS THAN ANY RAPPERS I KNOW. AND THATS FROM BEING A PERSONAL ASSISTANT 2 AFENI SHAKUR....INDEPENDENT COMPANIES MAKE MONEY OFF OF PHYSICAL SALES BRO...AND MOST ARTISTS HAVE A SHARE IN THAT.
SOMEONE WHO PRESSES UP THEIR OWN CD'S GETS THEIR MONEY OFF OF PHYSICAL SALES CUZ IF THEY DONT HAVE A NAME YET...WHO'S GOING 2 PAY THEM 4 A SHOW??? IM NOT TRYING 2 MISLEAD ANYBODY AND PEOPLE NEED 2 NOT PUT MESSAGES OUT THERE LIKE MAJOR DEALS ARE FLOATING AROUND...I DO KNOW THIS INDEPENDENT HUSTLE THO...AND THATS CUZ EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER!!!!

I couldn't agree any more. Yet, my point being that every artist is in it to make it. And publishings should be taken care of by every individual artist. Not wait & perhaps blow up and then try and get / own your publishings.

Too $hort has been saying it since the 80's. Every artist handle & own your own publishings. Take a look at all the credits of 2Pac's registered songs while under Death Row Records. (Suge Publishings ASCAP). It's not hard to tell what was going on.

In other words, anybody can take whatever song is out there and register it under their name. Take big named artist like Michael Jackson who registered the entire Beatles catalog fucking over Paul McCartney out of his money. All due to Paul McCartney not being on his toes.

Master P is the greatest example of great business. When Priority signed him he owned everything and had all his paperwork done. He was on top of his game to get paid & stay getting paid. We should look and follow footsteps. I'm speaking business wise.

I've owned my publishings since 2001 and it was free back then. They charge $50 for both writers & publishers application now. Now ASCAP is paying for smaller venues if you are doing enough shows (grinding). And you, yourself register your music online making sure every artist, producer etc. get's their money right. That's what I do with my independent label.

Don't wait to get signed to get your publishings. Major or independent, get your paperwork right so nobody rips you off.

the last cds i actually bought were repurchases of e40 in a major way and Dubee Aka Sugawolf. that was years ago. nowadays i dont purchase cds because everything i want to hear is already out there for free somehow someway which makes me realize that for an artist to make money nowadays they have to get it out for free as much as possible which is wayyyy backwards.

YEH BUT WE ARENT TALKING ANCIENT BAY HISTORY...WE'RE DISCUSSING THE STATE OF THE GAME NOW...AND NOBODY HAS ALBUMS 2 GET ON WHERE THEY KNOW AN ARTIST IS GOING PLATINUM AND THEY CAN EAT OFF PUBLISHING OR ROYALTIES...THATS WHY WE CHARGE LIKE WE DO 4 VERSES STILL...MOST OF THE ALBUMS WE FEATURE ON ARE NOT MAKING PUBLISHING MONEY...KEEP IT 100.
NO ONE IN THE BAY GETS CONSISTENT RADIO PLAY LIKE THAT...KEEP IT 100.
I KNOW EVERY ARTIST FROM THE 90'S INCLUDING 2 SHORT....MY BROTHER HAD THE SAME EXACT DEAL WITH JIVE AS SHORT CUZ THEY HAD THE SAME MANAGER(LIONEL B).
ASK SHORT HOW LONG IT TOOK HIM 2 GET ROYALTIES LET ALONE PUBLISHING...HE MIGHT JUST TELL U WHAT U WANT 2 HEAR...AS A PEER OF PLENTY OF ARTISTS...WE DISCUSS THESE KIND OF THINGS WHEN WE ARENT WORKING. NOT TRYING 2 BE CONTRADICTORY HOMIE...BUT I NOTICE ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE COMPARING NOW 2 BACC THEN BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS...THEN..GOOD ARTISTS MADE MONEY IF THEIR BUSINESS WAS RIGHT...NOW...GOOD ARTISTS MAKE MONEY IF THEY KNOW HOW 2 HUSTLE AND KNOW WHERE 2 GO WITH THEIR PRODUCT...NOBODY GIVES AWAY MONEY ANYMORE....NOBODY. FANS DONT EVEN WANT 2 GIVE UP $15....I SPEND THAT ON BLUNTS SOME DAYS AND IM NOT RICH. DOES MUSIC EVEN HAVE A VALUE ANYMORE. CUZ EVEN THE ARTISTS SELLING GOOD NUMBERS NOW ARE MOVING UNITS INDEPENDENTLY....HOW ELSE CAN U MAKE MONEY WITHOUT A MAJOR DEAL??? EVEN BACC IN THE DAY...THE ONLY REAL MONEY WAS ADVANCE MONEY....I PROMISE U. AND I GOT SOME FACTS 2 BACC UP WHAT IM SPEAKIN ON.

And I'm gonna be real and say I do agree. What I'm also saying, which I believe to be the misunderstanding is: artist not to solely focus on money from versus etc.

Regardless what the sales look like now. Somebody somewhere could pull a song recorded now and it becomes a hit 10 years from now. Just on the simple fact that it got to the right hands and get's on the radio etc. If they were to check if the song has an actual owner, your name would come up on the publishing title. It's your song.

We've heard too many horror stories from numerous artist of all genres of music from artist getting ripped off by the majors. Especially us independents Homie, for real. That's what I'm getting at.

I'm gonna stay real and say I have received 2 royalty checks this year, YET! It's nothing to brag about, but it's a good feeling knowing that even though people can rip my music off my myspace page etc. No other artist, major or independent can take credit and get paid off my music if it were to take off.

It's a long shot & perhaps a dreamers perspective, but I'm simply trying to cover all bases in this music biz.

These are my writer's and publishing ASCAP member cards.

1).Why do you think they get money at shows?... performance money is only a small portion of it. The bulk comes from merchandise...t-shirts, c.d.'s, ect. Not Mp3's.

2).You only get publishing money when your music is played publicly. I.E.; radio play (which damn near no bay artits get), T.V. (which no bay area artits get), and movie soundtracks(must I continue?), ect.

So like I said the majority of it comes from Physical c.d.'s! If you want to hear bay music in the future, then support!

I still download Jay-z, and other BIG time mutha fucka's... but not this bay shit!

I definitely hear what you're saying but ultimately I think it boils down to what I was speakin on before, rappers are just not putting out good cd's anymore. I respect the grind of independents out there making the investment out of their own pockets to try and make it in this music game. You also have to realize that there are a lot of unemployed people and people struggling to make ends meet. Consumers are finding it hard to justify paying for a cd that they may only like a song or two off of someone's album. In this day and age, you're basically gambling by buying a bay artists album. There has to be some trust established again between the artist and the consumer. Back in 94-96, you could gamble with $15 and be pretty sure you're going to get your money's worth. Even if you only liked 3 songs on the whole album, those 3 songs were going to slap hard and you'd bump the hell out of them. That's not the case anymore. The market is flooded and everyone thinks they can rap. For the ones that actually can rap, they're lost in the shuffle unless they can build a buzz which is hard to do with everyone and their mama putting out a cd and having their videos on youtube. I remember someone saying in here 2 years ago "every time I try and sell a cd to someone, they hand me back a demo" and that has killed careers in this music game.

Like I said before, I put out a cd on my own dime. Sounds somewhat like and album and somewhat like a mixtape. I used original beats and some established beats. I believed in the message that I was trying to get across enough to put it out for free. Artists need to be honest with themselves and make sure they're putting out the best possible product they can to establish trust with the consumer again and be willing to gain as little as possible until fans/supporters can trust their product enough to put their hard earned money down on the counter to buy your cd.

I rarely listen to rap from any region because 98% of it sucks, major or independent. If I dl it for free and find out that it's good, I'll buy the album. But that's just me. I know everyone may not agree with that. I honestly believe though that if the album is dope, you'll always get back what you put into it and ever more. Its the same in any business. If you have a restaurant that only has good food 2 out of 14 times, you can't expect people to be lining up to pay hard earned money to eat there. But if you were handing that food out for free, tons of people would be eating it, no matter how bad it is

Sounds like your the type of dude who doesn't plan for the future. If you were rich you wouldn't worry about leaving a will for your next of kin. So what, you'll always have time to do a will. You'll do all that when you get ready to die, right?

LOL!!!!! Talk about contradiction. You might as well download Bay artist too half stepper! You are the main reason majors won't give these Bay artist advance money. Nor sign them cause people like you who rip off majors. The majors won't take the risk of putting money behind any "NEW" as in, new to the world Bay artist and try and break him since they know established artist aren't racking numbers like they should!

Thank you! Thank you! LMAO!!!!!!!

Now!

NOT AROUND HERE.

and the most popular artist from the West Coast right now is Lil B with all the attention that guy is getting. He's from the Bay too.
I MEAN IF U ARE TALKING ABOUT POPULARITY AS FAR AS PEOPLE...I WOULD RATHER BE SOLID THAN POPULAR...PEOPLE SAY THINGS ABOUT LIL B THAT I WOULDNT SAY ABOUT MY WORST ENEMY...IF THATS WHAT POPULARITY GETS U...I DONT WANT IT.
