If you download the two songs you liked for free then your still stealing from the artist. Whether its one song or twenty that you download for free you are the problem and the reason that bay rap isn't as good as it was years ago. Artist cant grow and become better if they cant recoup what was spent on the project. All these people say they buy cds that they like but in reality it can just be all talk to cover up that they are really stealing and could care less what happens to the artist. Great artist you don't hear from any more are victims of this vicious cycle.
give me a break dogg, save me the lecture. You'd be hard pressed to even find the music to illegally download the artists that can't recoup their losses. A Wax came on here confronting people for downloading his music illegally because his sales weren't what he thought they should be. People couldn't find not one single song of his to download illegally.

I'm talking about established, major artists. Not around the way cats that I dl for free.

Bay area fans refuse to play the role of fans, simple as that. When I was in texas, my cousins boyfriend refused to let her burn these local cats cd's, he told her to go buy a copy. I mean thats a bit much, but it goes to show the loyalty they have for their local artists. Bay area fans are all "artists" in their own head and feel they don't need to support established bay acts. They'd rather see themselves in that role.

@Gemini, will you be releasing your dvd in a digital download format or just hard copies? Netflix and other services like itunes have changed the movie game as well. Also, how would you feel about someone bootlegging your film, you know, to make sure its worth buying?

I'll put it like this, I put out a cd and I came out of pocket for all the expenses and for pressing them up and put it out for free. I give it away for free, it's up for free download too. I believe that much in the music and the message of it. Most of these dudes out here gettin butt hurt don't have anything real to say and they're trying to make money and that's it. They don't care if lives are being affected in a positive way, there's no real message so they're pissed about not moving the units that they think they should.

Even Immortal Technique flat out tells people to download his music for free if they can't afford it because he believes in his message and his music.

You raise a good point that is also a contributing factor. Rappers need to lower their expectations, they need to do it for the art again, not for the paychecks. Everyone wants to be a rockstar, no one wants to just drop classic material(for the most part). Those days are long gone, you aren't about to be balling with this rap shit, stop trying to, get your revenue up in other ways because I'm positive you won't reach that level in this new market. Just try to make the best music you can.

i just read this whole thread in one sitting. alot of good points. I gotta agree with Killa Tay again and again tho. My store sells cds all day everyday and thats all i listen to. I have over a thousand cd's easy. And I can remember opening almost every one of them and throwing the cd in the player and reading the liner notes. Maybe I'm old school but theres alot of people out there that feel the same way and still buy cds. I remember buying 20 or 30 snake eyes cd's from you or direct from your label Tay, and selling them with the quickness. It's not quite the same now but I still put food on the table for me and my son from CD sales so there you go. Our store sells vinyl everyday too, and thats a dying or dead format supposedly... There will always be people that want to hold a physical product and not just some files on their computer. Or if not I'll be at Mcdonald's getting your order.

Not sure yet as to how it will be released. Like I've said, I'm talking to some important people that want to showcase it before an actual release.

How would I feel about somebody bootlegging my product?

When I dropped my last album it was bootlegged within the first day of it's release. Now, after I changed my rap name & came out with new material some lady (older lady, mind you) had the nerve to email me & say she had burned a Cd of my new music. How she got it? Ripped it out of my myspace page. Technology is at it's prime! People can now rip videos off youtube! WTF?

Couple of people on the open forum read my interview on BayUnground.com
and googled my album. Guess what? They found it available for download. Somebody posting on different message boards as me & acting like it's all good.

As far as my film goes? If it goes on to film festivals as planned & somebody want's it that bad, they'll sneak in a camcorder and record it.

It's a digital world and all this downloading epidemic is unstoppable. Trying to stop pirates is like trying to get rid of every terrorist, every gang banger & every got damn fly in the world. It's not going to happen, so I honestly don't give it the time of day to stress about it.

And trust I'm not being sarcastic with you, Bro. I'm being as humble as I am if you met me in person.

computers crash, break, all types of shit. the 40 gigs of music i had saved on my laptop wont be recovered cuz my laptop was dropped and shattered.. but guess what? All my cd's are still in effect. and yeah, cd's break, but if stored correctly, they last a long mother fucking time. My cousin gave me a box of cd's....all those cd's were out of print...you couldnt find half that shit on the internet if you tried, because it was hood shit, someone pressed up 100 copies and got their hustle on in the town and it didnt go any father than that. some of those cds are from the era when computers werent big. so, hell yeah i buy cd's. because theres no guaruntee that the specific album in mention will find its way on the internet enough times to the point where youll be able to just google and find it.

now on the other hand...will i buy EVERY CD? no. If youre cd aint worth purchasing, im gonna download it. and i could really give a fuck about your feelings on that. because if i got a specific amount of money to live on till my next check, im not about to be broke just to cop your shit. im obviously going to buy necessities (and even things that arent necessities, but are more important than your CD) before your shit.

Let me make something clear though. If youre trying to sell a digital album, and i can download your album for free quicker than i can pay for it, sorry homie, youre gonna get shafted. im not paying for that shit. call me a criminal, call me an asshole, whatever you want, but no one pays for the apple that grows on the tree...

albums i buy:
1) local (california) albums. I support my state.
2) people who have given away their music in the past. (DJ fresh gave away make the beat cry and okair, and due to that i'll buy any dj fresh album i see in stores, off top) im not a digital album dude tho, so unfortunately if i dont see it, i just dont hear it. cuz if i got respect like that, im not gonna dl.
3) people whos artistry deserves money. (if you arent worth it, why would i pay?)

i dont buy blank cds, when i download an album its put on my computer for me to listen to while i play video games, smoke weed, etc. the albums i download, i wouldnt have bought. You should honestly even be lucky im listening to you, because atleast now ive heard of you can can judge an opinion on whether ill give you a shot at the checkout line next time. I dont download 40 albums and shit. ill download 2 things, theyll sit on my computer enough for me to bump for a week or two then i delete it. albums i buy, its because i need a copy for my car.

you go through my cd's, you dont see bootleggs...you see album covers and the real cd behind it...and i have 4 books of cds in my car.... but ill still download an album....no moneys lost cuz i wouldnt buy your shit anyway...

let me put it to you like this...lets say i post a picture of one of my paintings right now....are you gonna pay 400.00 to have it, or are you gonna press right click, and save the picture?

get over yourself (dont respond to me, im not talking to you)....make music because youre an artist and a musician...the money is a fringe benefit and isnt guarunteed...

i mean thats where intelligence plays a factor IMO....its up to the artist to be a hustler and know how to make some money out the game...but hell yeah i buy cds...and il always buy cds....cuz thats just how i am....im the type of person that dont go to walmart i go to mom and pop stores....if i respect your music i wont even go to the stores...ill find you and give you the money so you make all of it...

i just wanna point out that even tho im a cd buyer shit still gets downloaded, alot of times its free music too, mixtapes and shit, but yeah...i do...but guess what tho? i have less than 200 megabytes of music on my computer right now. so that speaks for itself. i also got 10 times that in emails that the artist gave me, while i was doing radio...so it is what it is...and if i buy the album more than likely the whole shit slaps...ill be damned if i pay 10 and like 3 songs...

once someone sold me a 36 minute album for 10 dollars..and i didnt know till i got home...shit like that is why people get bootlegged

PS: one last thing, i dont share bootlegged albums, and ill never give someone a burned copy of a local album. people be askin me to burn them a mp3 and the answer is always no......buy the shit or find it on your own...but im not gonna fuck over an artist for you...

NOBODY BUYS EVERY CD...BUT IT WAS A GOOD THING WHEN ARTISTS HAD RELEASES COMING OUT EVERY TUESDAY AND U COULD GO PICC SOMETHING THAT U KNEW WAS WORTH YOUR MONEY..NOW I UNDERSTAND BUT HONESTLY..I WOULDNT HAVE STARTED MY OWN LABEL IF IT WASNT BOUT MONEY..I DONT KNOW 2 MANY PEOPLE WHO WOULD PUT TIME AND MONEY INTO MUSIC JUST 2 SAY THEY DO MUSIC...ITS A HUSTLE 4 ME JUST LIKE A JOB WOULD BE...NOT MY LIFE..BUT A HUSTLE...SO IF MONEY IS SPENT...MONEY MUST BE MADE...OR ELSE IM GOING BACCWARDS...EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN OPINIONS AND I RESPECT ALL OF EM EXCEPT 4 THE PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY WILL NEVER SPEND MONEY ON MUSIC.
