Four people have been arrested in New Zealand as part of an FBI-led crackdown on online piracy.

The four are among seven people facing online piracy charges in the United States, after an FBI investigation resulted in one of the world's largest file-sharing websites, www.megaupload.com, being shut down on Friday morning (AEDT).

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom (also known as Kim Schmitz), a 37-year-old German national and New Zealand resident, was arrested by New Zealand police in Auckland on Friday morning, the US Department of Justice said in a statement.

Also arrested were the website's chief marketing officer Finn Batato, 38, and chief technical officer and co-founder Mathias Ortmann, 40, both from Germany, and Dutch national Bram van der Kolk, 29, who is also a New Zealand resident.

Police executed provisional arrest warrants at the United States' request, and other agencies - including the Organised and Financial Crime Agency, Crown Law and the Office of the Solicitor General provided "substantial and critical assistance", the statement says.

The four face charges of engaging in a racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and criminal copyright infringement.

The charges carry up to 20 years' imprisonment.

Three more people are wanted in connection with the alleged offending.

Two corporations, Megaupload Limited and Vestor Limited, are also included in the indictment, filed in Virginia in the US on January 5.

More than 20 search warrants were executed in the US and eight other countries.

Officials seized about $50 million in assets as well as 18 domain names associated with Megaupload.

Papers filed in the Virginia court allege the group conducted an illegal operation "using a business model expressly designed to promote uploading of the most popular copyrighted works for many millions of users to download".

They also allegedly offered a rewards programme that provided users with financial incentives to upload popular content and drive web traffic to the site.

New Zealand police were to comment on the case later on Friday.

lets be real about something real quick if they didnt want us to "steal" shit why did they ever make CD Burners? Dvd Burners Now bluray Burners?
that comment would only weigh on Sony. they damn near created cd-r's and cd burners and a big chunk of the music industry is Sony Music Entertainent. but burners and cd-r's werent invented for music piracy. they was for data storage. (un)fortunatly music is data. technology just got smaller and cheaper and then little Napsters were born and thats why now this thread is here.

as far as Blu Ray burners, Sony makes Blu Ray burners and they created Blu Ray format, which was created for the movie industry. im not sure how they got around makin burners since all the major studios fuck with Blu Ray, and a "copy" you made for your own self from your own Blu Ray movie you purchased is still technicaly copyright infringment.

you said somethin there player.

The other thing about Anonymous is a good portion of them aren't based in the US either, they are from all over the world and they will always have their American counterparts backs. A few years ago they tried to track down a bunch of them for similar attacks against different sites and while some were American they were literally spread all over the world. The whole structure, or lack of structure but being able to come togethr for a common goal, of Anonymous is really interesting to me.

If you guys think this site is immune your crazy. The software section is enough to get siccness shutdown alone. An internet shitstorm is about to happen.

maybe im noided but am i the only one who thinks Anonymous is also the government fucking with us. Could be another fictitious war they are starting. :siccness::siccness::siccness:

you'd think with all this technology and shit the government had they would be able to track anyone anytime even out of our country. especially for making threats and shutting down their sites. But im sure theres more to hacking i dont know.
