Good or bad Giants don't wanna fuck up their clubhouse aka their pockets. Giants could learn a thing or 20 from Billy Beane. The money is there, the will to go and get the player you need vs the player you end up settling for is baffling.

The Giants agreed to terms with three of their five arbitration-eligible players before Thursday’s deadline to exchange figures, hammering out one-year deals for right-hander Yusmeiro Petit, infielder Tony Abreu and outfielder Gregor Blanco.

The two unsigned arbitration-eligible players, first baseman Brandon Belt and infielder Joaquin Arias, were due to exchange salary offers with the club. If no agreement can be reached in the coming weeks, the two sides would go before an arbiter who would choose one of the two salaries.

Belt, who is eligible for arbitration as a player with two-plus years of service time, figures to get a substantial bump from the $531,500 he made last season. Belt ranked 14th in the NL in OPS and is probably in line for a salary in the $2-3 million range.

The Giants’ history is to figure out a one-year deal for their arbitration-eligible players according to the schedule, then expand talks in the spring to see if there is any common ground on a multiyear deal. Belt, because he’s a super-two, will have four arbitration years before he’s eligible for free agency.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Blanco will make $2.525 million, Petit will make $845,000 and Abreu signed for $745,000. Petit’s deal also includes performance incentives, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of MLBTradeRumors.com.

Blanco’s salary is higher because he’s in his third (of four) arbitration years.

Giants released RHP Caleb Clay.
The 25-year-old right-hander will sign with Hanwha in the Korean Baseball Organization. It's a bit of a surprise move, after he posted a terrific 2.96 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 110/31 K/BB ratio over 158 1/3 innings between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse in 2013.

Joaquin Arias requested $1.5 million and was offered $1.1 million from the Giants when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.
With the two sides so close, it's likely they settle around $1.3 million. He'll continue to function in a utility role for the Giants in 2014.

Brandon Belt requested $3.6 million and was offered $2.05 million from the Giants when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.
The Baby Giraffe finally started to deliver on his immense promise in 2013, slashing .289/.360/.481 with 17 homers, 67 RBI and five stolen bases in 509 at-bats. He'll earn a nice raise over the $531,500 that he earned in 2013.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is reporting that the Yankees have traded lefty David Huff to the Giants for cash considerations.

The Yankees had acquired Huff by claiming him off waivers from the Indians in late May last season.

In 34 2/3 innings split between two spot starts and nine relief appearances, Huff posted a 5.50 ERA. He has always been prone to giving up home runs, so a move to the spacious confines of AT&T Park might be beneficial for the 29-year-old.

Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com reports that Pablo Sandoval exited a Venezuelan Winter League playoff game Saturday after he "pulled up lame after running out a ground ball."
The good news is that Baggarly says it "appeared to be a minor injury," and "it’s likely that he exited as a precaution." Sandoval should have no problem getting all healed up prior to the start of spring training. The third baseman has whipped himself into excellent shape this winter as he prepares for his contract year.

Report: Barry Bonds helping Giants

Print

Barry Bonds will serve as a special instructor for San Francisco Giants hitters during spring training, according to a report by the San Jose Mercury News.

The former Giants star is a seven-time National League MVP and MLB's all-time home runs leader with 762, including a single-season record 73 in 2001.

But Bonds' reputation has been tarnished by his connection to performance-enhancing drugs and an obstruction to justice conviction stemming from the BALCO investigation.

Giants sign Tyler Colvin

The Giants have signed outfielder Tyler Colvin to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training, reports Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News.

Colvin previously agreed to a major league contract with the Orioles in January, but the deal was nixed after the team raised concerns about a back condition during the pre-signing physical. It was reported earlier this week that Colvin could still end up with Baltimore, presumably on a minor league deal, but he has opted to go elsewhere.

Colvin spent most of last season with the Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate and struggled during his brief time in the majors, but he shown some pop in the past. He’ll provide some outfield depth for San Francisco.
