The Giants agreed to terms with three of their five arbitration-eligible players before Thursday’s deadline to exchange figures, hammering out one-year deals for right-hander Yusmeiro Petit, infielder Tony Abreu and outfielder Gregor Blanco.
The two unsigned arbitration-eligible players, first baseman Brandon Belt and infielder Joaquin Arias, were due to exchange salary offers with the club. If no agreement can be reached in the coming weeks, the two sides would go before an arbiter who would choose one of the two salaries.
Belt, who is eligible for arbitration as a player with two-plus years of service time, figures to get a substantial bump from the $531,500 he made last season. Belt ranked 14th in the NL in OPS and is probably in line for a salary in the $2-3 million range.
The Giants’ history is to figure out a one-year deal for their arbitration-eligible players according to the schedule, then expand talks in the spring to see if there is any common ground on a multiyear deal. Belt, because he’s a super-two, will have four arbitration years before he’s eligible for free agency.
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Blanco will make $2.525 million, Petit will make $845,000 and Abreu signed for $745,000. Petit’s deal also includes performance incentives, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of MLBTradeRumors.com.
Blanco’s salary is higher because he’s in his third (of four) arbitration years.
