Giants' Posey named NL Player, Rookie of the Month

New York, NY (Sports Network) - San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has been named the National League Player and Rookie of the Month for July.

Posey garnered both awards after leading the NL with 43 hits and finishing third in the circuit with a .417 average. He also put together a 21-game hitting streak, the longest in the league so far this season.

He hit six doubles and seven home runs and drove in 24 runs, good for third in the league, while scoring 20 times.

The 2008 Golden Spikes Award winner became the first rookie to claim the award since Milwaukee's Ryan Braun did so in July, 2007.

Other players receiving votes for the player of the month award were Colorado outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto.

The only other player to receive votes for the rookie award was St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jon Jay (.431, two homer runs and 11 RBI).

it was mentioned during the game but i couldnt find anywhere else, the only article on Posey winning player of the month, good shit Posey, ROOKIE OF THE YEAR!!!!

theyre cheating! its the humidor lol.. nah we still do need a bat.. whoever thinks otherwise clearly hasnt seen the hitting today.. i know its Jimenez but look how bad we beat him last time.. dropped 7 on him.

We do not need another bat, simple and plain, sure it would be a nice commodity, but the price would be our pitching, and I sure as hell wouldn't give up anybody on the rotation or top prospects. Ubaldo shut us down today, he was way better than the last time we faced him, he kept the ball down and made the pitches he needed to make. Same goes with Sanchez yesterday, although he got into trouble a couple of times, he managed to pitch through it. Or what just because Sanchez shut down the rockies (in which they were scoring 10 runs per game in their 4 game winning streak) they need another bat in their line up? no. What happened to the Rockies yesterday happened to the Giants today and folks already saying we need another bat, we're fine. Why would you want to mess with our team chemistry right now, who would you bench? Renteria and Rowand are already being benched because of how productive Torres and Uribe have been, and Renteria is only out there because Uribe is dealing with his hammy. Sabean some-what did his job in the trade deadline and got what we needed which was another lefty in the bullpen while Runzler and Affeldt are still on the DL for the next couple of weeks. We already added a bat for absolutely nothing, his name is Posey, just sayin'

we do need another bat.. if we wanna get into the playoffs.. but im not sayin what is available we should get.. because there isnt shit.. how many runners are left on base all the time?? i can count more times theyve been left on base than times theyve been brought home... you honestly cant be satisfied with what we have right now, its nice but realistically were 1 bat away from being a real threat if and when we make the playoffs. You guys will be chiming a different tune if our bats cool down.. watch.... not too long ago half of u were bashing on Torres and now that he's doin good its the opposite..

pablos unfortunately not gonna do shit this season because of the divorce hes goin thru..

Thursday’s Giants lineup plus roster move

It’s 93 degrees and inching higher at Turner Field, with the kind of humidity that makes you feel like there’s a blanket over your head.

Oh, and Tim Lincecum is starting tonight.

Lincecum hates the perception that he wilts in the heat. Well, there’s one thing he can do to stop the questions: Toss a five-hit shutout.

It’s no coincidence that the Giants made a roster move today, designating Denny Bautista for assignment and recalling right-hander Todd Wellemeyer from his rehab assignment. The Giants have a long man for the first time all season, and perhaps they feel they might need one tonight in case Lincecum melts.

Wellemeyer actually went to start for Triple-A Fresno last night at Round Rock, near Austin, Texas. But Bautista was so awfully erratic yesterday at Coors Field, the Giants scratched Wellemeyer and had Kevin Pucetas pitch for the Grizzlies instead. Wellemeyer caught a flight to Atlanta and is here now.

Bautista wasn’t just an extreme minus-command guy. Eventually, he was going to hurt someone. Melvin Mora is lucky he just had a contusion after getting hit flush on the knee yesterday. Maybe Bautista can sort out his issues in the minors, but I doubt we’ll see him again.

The Braves made a few roster moves, too, although it won’t affect the Giants in this four-game series. Kris Medlen, the only starter who wasn’t going to pitch against the Giants, is on the DL and apparently headed for Tommy John surgery with a torn ligament in his elbow. The Braves called up Mike Minor, their top pitching prospect, and he’ll make his major league debut Monday.

The lineups, including the return of Juan Uribe:

RF Torres
2B Sanchez
1B Huff
C Posey
SS Uribe
LF Burrell
3B Sandoval
CF Rowand
P Lincecum

2B Infante
RF Heyward
3B Chipper
C McCann
1B Hinske
CF Ankiel
SS Gonzalez
LF Melky Cabrera
P Jurrjens

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reports that the Giants are "discussing" Royals outfielder Jose Guillen.

The struggling and overpaid Guillen was designated for assignment by Kansas City on Thursday afternoon after batting .255/.314/.429 over 396 at-bats and .151/.198/.260 after the All-Star break. He's a liability in the outfield and would not do well in San Francisco's spacious AT&T Park, but the Giants want to beef up their bench and Guillen at least boasts a hint of power. The Royals should part with him easily.

i have said i really believe what huff said about the giants not needing another bat because of team chemistry and as far as the whole bunch of guys being left on base. that wouldnt matter if you got a big bat because they still strike out fly out team chemistry is key and they have said time and time again the feeling in the clubhouse is great something you dont want to change
