Houshmandzadeh says Palmer’s still got it
Former Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has been working out with new Raiders quarterback (and former “retired” Bengal) Carson Palmer all year. He told Bengals.com that Palmer’s elbow, which caused him to miss 12 games in 2008 with a frayed ulna nerve, was still hurt last year.
“I threw with him before last season and he was OK, but he wasn’t zipping it like he used to. I thought he was hurt,” Houshmandzadeh said. “This year, oh man, it’s about as good as I’ve ever seen him. He’s healthy. He’s throwing it like the Carson of old.”
Houshmandzadeh said that Raiders receivers will be happy with Tuesday’s trade.
“You always knew you had a shot with Carson,” Houshmandzadeh said. “You knew he was accurate downfield and he could make every throw. He could get it down there and I think he still can.
As for Palmer, he said he was working out with Houshmandzadeh and high school players in Southern California, to stay in shape but wasn’t sure he would get another chance to play in the NFL.
“There was a number of times that there were teams approaching the Bengals and it didn’t work out, so it was a very difficult time,” Palmer said.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t know what was around the next turn, the next week, the next month. So there was a lot of confusion and I really didn’t know what was next.”
He got a text at 4 in the morning Tuesday to come to Oakland, and “couldn’t be happier” to have landed with Hue Jackson and the Raiders.
