An 8-year old and two 10-year olds were arrested Friday on charges of illegally carrying weapons after one of the 10-year-olds flashed a gun and threatened to kill another student at a New Orleans elementary school, police said.
The three, whose names were not released, were arrested Friday by New Orleans police at Laurel Elementary School, 820 Jackson Ave.
Police said they were called to the school about 10 a.m. after receiving a report that a 10-year-old had a gun, which he bought for $2 from an 8-year-old Thursday.
In the schoolyard Friday morning, the 10-year-old put the gun in his waistband, showed it to an 11-year-old student and said he was going to kill him.
The boy with the gun then ran and hid the weapon in a classroom. Shortly afterward, the 10-year-old and the 11-year-old were arguing when a teacher intervened and learned the younger student had threatened the other student with the gun.
The weapon was later found in a classroom, and all of the students involved were held for police.
The gun, a small-caliber semiautomatic pistol, was found unloaded, but it appeared to be functional. The 8- and the 10-year-old were arrested and taken to the NOPD Juvenile Bureau, where they were held on charges of illegal carrying of weapons. A second 10-year-old also was arrested and held on the same charge because police said he held the gun overnight and returned it Friday morning to the boy who bought it. In addition, the 10-year-old who threatened the other student was booked with aggravated assault. Investigators were still attempting to determine the origin of the weapon.
