Okay, Im gonna bring race into this convo... Im gonna guess that most of you who hate R&B but like rap music are white.
Well, I'M white, and I like R&B and Funk, but yeah, I've kind of noticed that...when I was a student teacher years ago, sometimes when I'd be through teaching or if it'd be a situation where the kids were just given the last few minutes of class to relax a little, I'd sometimes get into conversations w/ them about what kind of music they liked.
I kind of noticed (and don't jump all over me for this; I'm just citing what I observed) that in general, my black and hispanic students were fairly diversified as far as musical tastes. Most (or at least a LOT) of them would admit to liking two or more forms of music--they would say that they liked (depending on the individual student) any combination of (say) Rap, R&B, Rock and a few even said Gospel and/or Jazz and one even liked Classical (none admitted to liking Country, though. LOL!)
But my white students generally tended to admit to liking only one form of music (in my classes, it was usually either Rap OR some form of Rock), but that ONE FORM of music was IT for the white kids. My white students, when I'd ask them about, say, R&B, Funk, Jazz, Blues, or something outside of Rock or Rap, tended to be more likely to say, "oh, R&B (for instance) sucks" or "oh, Jazz (for instance) is 'retarded' or 'gay.'" (Now you know why I stick to teaching college students today! LMFAO!) I've noticed that tendency as well, in my dealings with friends, classmates, fellow employees, etc., so MeloTrauma may have a point. I'm not generalizing or saying that's ALWAYS the way it is, but if the shoe fits...
PEACE!
