A 73-year-old Italian woman is under investigation for allegedly locking her mentally disturbed daughter in a darkened bathroom for 30 years.
Police said that Annina Gentilezza kept her now 52-year-old daughter, Giuseppina, a prisoner in a top-floor apartment in Pescara on the Adriatic coast. Officers raided the home after being tipped off by Gentilezza's daughter-in-law.
Giuseppina was found curled in a ball in a 7-by-9 foot tiled room containing a lavatory, bidet, sink and washing machine, the Times of London said. Also in the room were a camp bed and plastic dog bowls in which Giuseppina allegedly was fed leftovers.
Police said that instead of being washed Giuseppina was hosed down on the apartment's balcony. The officer who led the raid said Giuseppina was beaten and sometimes left out on the balcony as a punishment, especially in the winter.
She reportedly was allowed out once a month with her mother and stepfather to collect her invalid pension.
