A lot of people say build championship teams through the draft but I like free agent signings a lil bit better. When you draft someone it's either a hit or miss because that player hasn't proven himself but when you sign a free agent you pretty much know that you're getting a proven player. Free agents are a little pricier though. But if you have the cap room to sign a free agent then I say go for it. The Raiders are a better team this year on paper because they were very aggressive in free agency.

Look at Frisco's qb situation for example. If they would have signed a free agent qb instead of drafting Alex Smith they probably would be a better team now. But it's looking like they wasted a draft pick trying to build through the draft. Now they're set back! They should have at least tried to go after Chad Pennington (Bill Parcells likes him so he probably would have signed with the Dolphins anyway, but you never know)!

There are plenty of wr's that you all coud have drafted instead of paying javon, and they will perform better as well. Hell for that price you could have had another 1 or 2 free agents (hackett, jackson, etc) AND a rook wr or 2.

I do like free agents as well but the draft is the best start.

I hear you... I like drafting as well because you can come up with steals (like Michael Bush, Terrell Davis, Tom Brady) but I wouldn't put all my trust in drafting players because half of them don't even make the team or some end up huge busts.

The Javon Walker signing was a risky signing because of his injury history and the amount of money he is being paid. So far he has yet to come up with a catch in pre-season (not good) but I am still willing to see what he'll do in the regular season. If he gets it going and turns into the Javon Walker we know he can be it'll be worth the free agent signing.

Theres nothing wrong with free agent signings, but you cant build the foundation of your team completley through free agency. Its import to have a gm that knows how to draft wisely and thats something the Raiders havn't had for a long while.

Your Alex Smith arguement is bogus. What if the Colts followed your philosphy and passed on Peyton Manning? You also spent all last off-season convincing everyone why the Raiders should draft Russell first overall, now your trying to say teams are better off getting a QB in free agency?

Don't get it twisted! It depends who's available (in free agency vs. draft) at the time and what your team needs. You gotta know how to evaluate talent. I wouldn't have passed on Peyton Manning or JaMarcus Russell if I ran a team and was in position to draft them (if my team was in need of a qb). I would have passed on Alex Smith though... I was even saying that before they drafted him. Smith had his contract before he was drafted. I knew just from watching film that he was going to be garbage.

JaMarcus Russell looked like he was going to be a good qb so of course we should have drafted him vs signing a free agent.

So I am not saying that teams should sign free agent qb's vs drafting them. It just depends on who's available at the time.

As far as this page goes...

Alex Smith is not the answer in SF. End of discussion, this is a Raiders thread.

Javon Walker was a waste of money. See above ^^. He shouldn't be a Raider.

And until he contributes on the field, YOU CANNOT PROVE THAT STATEMENT FALSE.

I love my Raiders. I've been a big fan for years, and experienced 2 really great seasons in the past...20 or so? And I still got that shit on my back in a tat. Not because the colors are cool, or my favorite player went there, or my friend likes them...but there is no fucking way that Al Davis is coherant enough to build this team into a winner. Please...JESUS CHRIST give us a new owner who's interested in our TEAM, our LEGACY, our fucking WIN/loss record...and not just money.

Palabra de Dios, amen.

^ i agree, from his production in louisville and potential alone, i would say the raiders could possibly have picked up a steal.

but he hasn't done anything since being drafted, that's why i didn't understand why he was mentioned with td and tom brady.

he's still young, and he is finally healthy, so he has a lot of time to prove that he's a good player.

Yeah...it's one of those things where we'll have to wait and see.

At the time, I thought Troy Smith was a fucking loooooooong shot where he was taken, but right now, on the team he's on (Ravens), he's their best option, so that was a good pickup.

As far as TD and Brady go, who else was taken in those rounds? Are those busts or steals? It's hard to predict what ''could be'' in the NFL...for example, look at Chris Henry. Just re-signed with the Bengals. GREAT talent...not likely to be an all-time great, but could be great right now...yet he's a fucking moron who can't keep his head on straight. You never know.

Romo. He's a solid player, but hasn't proven shit. If you think about it...he's been as good as Jeff Garcia. Both are good players, but not great. And neither was a first round pick.

I'm drunk and going to sleep in a couple of minutes.

Agreed^ I am willing to give him a shot to see what he can do for us. I know he's been looking pretty bad in pre-season so I am hoping he'll step his game up once the season starts.

New twist for Fargas: He's established as starter

New twist for Fargas: He's established as starter

Jake Curtis, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, August 21, 2008

(08-20) 18:32 PDT -- The Raiders' starting offense will get extensive playing time in Saturday's third preseason game against the Cardinals - with one notable exception.

That would be Justin Fargas, who, despite limited playing time during the preseason and the presence of Darren McFadden, is entrenched as the Raiders' No. 1 running back.

In the first two preseason games, Fargas had only eight carries, tied for the fourth most on the team, for only 28 yards, which is sixth on the Raiders.

Coach Lane Kiffin said Wednesday that Fargas won't play much Saturday, either, even though quarterback JaMarcus Russell and the rest of the Oakland offense are expected to play through the first half and perhaps into the second.

Fargas is healthy, but Kiffin said he already knows what Fargas can do, which is why McFadden, Michael Bush and Adimchinobe Echemandu will get most of the preseason work at running back.

It's an unfamiliar situation for Fargas, who has not been anointed as a starter in preseason since his high school days.

"It's a little different, but the approach is the same," Fargas said. "I'm just ready for the games to count. I kind of wish I could play the whole game, but I understand."

He struggled for playing time during his three seasons at Michigan and started four games as a senior at USC, splitting time with Sultan McCullough. He was not a regular starter in the NFL until last season, when he began as the third-string running back but won the starting job at midseason. He started seven games, collected 1,009 yards and was rewarded with a three-year, $12 million contract in February.

"Everyone wants that financial security," said Fargas, 28, who is in his sixth NFL season, "but I feel young and that I'm improving."

The running-back stable has been remade since he signed. McFadden was the fourth overall pick in the draft, and LaMont Jordan and Dominic Rhodes, the two players ahead of Fargas on the depth chart last preseason, were released.

Fargas was not surprised when McFadden was drafted. Fargas said he did not worry about how it might affect his playing time.

"I didn't look at it like that," he said. "I looked at it as him complementing what we have."

Although many thought McFadden would displace Fargas as the starter, it has not happened.

Kickers out: Kiffin said that neither punter Shane Lechler (quadriceps) nor kicker Sebastian Janikowksi (hamstring) will play Saturday. Wide receiver Arman Shields (knee), linebacker Grant Irons (back) and cornerback John Bowie (knee) are not expected to play either, and safety Hiram Eugene (hip) is questionable.

Davis on scene: Raiders managing general partner Al Davis watched practice from the sideline for a while Wednesday. Kiffin has suggested in recent days that some things he would like to do regarding personnel moves are beyond his control, an allusion to Davis' control.

Receiver blues: Kiffin challenged his receivers to be more productive, but he was not satisfied Wednesday.

"We probably had seven drops today," he said, "and a lot of them were with our frontline guys."

yeah... even though Bush and McFadden both look like they will be more than solid backs you still gotta give the job to Fargas until someone earns it from him

Fargas deserves the starting spot but it seems like his isn't trippin' on the presence of McFadden because with him it makes the whole team better.

they need to line mcfadden in the slot on single back formations.

bush is gonna be a great find. hes 245 and looks like hes gliding. his footwork is amazing. fargas does deserve to start until he gets hurt. i hate to think it, but someone who runs as hard as him is bound to get hurt at some point. regardless we got guys to plug in and not lose a step. its a great thing to be loaded at running back.
