49ers sign Steelers' castoff Jeff Reed to kick
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/12/03/SPNQ1GL8ET.DTL

The 49ers signed veteran cold-weather kicker Jeff Reed for Sunday's game at Green Bay, where kickoff temperatures are expected to be subfreezing.

Reed will join the team for practice today, according to his agent and multiple reports. His signing became necessary when 49ers kicker Joe Nedney's attempted return this week was stalled by two missed practices.

Nedney has missed two games with a sprained right (nonkicking) knee and an unspecified bone bruise. His previous replacement, Shane Andrus, was released Tuesday after missing 2 of 4 field goals at Arizona.

Reed spent the past eight seasons kicking in frigid Pittsburgh, so Lambeau Field in December is nothing new. The Steelers cut their franchise's No. 2 all-time leading scorer Nov. 16 after giving him the franchise tag in the offseason.

He was 15-for-22 in field goals when Pittsburgh let him go.

Safety first: Niners coach Mike Singletary said the team didn't get enough rest between a Monday night game against New Orleans and a trip to Kansas City in September, contributing to two losses in six days.

This time, he's taking it easy on the team with lighter practices and more rest on another week made short by a Monday night game.

That's one reason running back Brian Westbrook (ankle) missed a second straight practice, even though he is expected to start.

Others with more serious injuries include outside linebacker Parys Haralson (ankle) and cornerback Shawntae Spencer (quadriceps).

49ers: Tough to block Clay Matthews all alone
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/12/03/SP1R1GL45U.DTL

Rookie right tackle Anthony Davis just had the game of his brief NFL career. He shut down Pro Bowl defensive lineman Darnell Dockett. He didn't allow a single Arizona Cardinals sack.

What is his reward?

A date with Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews, who leads the NFL with 11.5 sacks after going to the Pro Bowl as a rookie last year.

"I don't really want to talk about it," Davis said before practice Thursday. "I'm just going to keep getting better, you know what I'm saying?"

So Davis doesn't have much to say about Sunday's most pivotal matchup to watch at Lambeau Field. The truth of the matter is, if the 49ers are going to keep Matthews off quarterback Troy Smith's back, it will be because a lot of Davis' teammates had a say in the matter.

After all, it will take a village to contain Matthews, and perhaps a few suburbs, too. Matthews is that ferocious a pass rusher, and that powerful a run stopper, and that much more impossible for Davis to handle on his own.

"He's all over the place," 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Johnson said of the Thor-haired muscleman from USC. "We have to know where he is at all times. We'll have to be ready as a protection group.

"So, it's not going to be solely on Anthony Davis. It's going to be a group effort to try to make sure that we get these guys blocked in a passing situation."

So who is the hired help these days?

It starts in the middle with center Tony Wragge, who will make his first start since 2006 if David Baas isn't medically cleared to return from his second concussion of the season - and Baas still hasn't practiced this week, so expect Wragge.

That's right. The offensive lineman responsible for setting the all-important pass protections at the line of scrimmage could be a sixth-year backup guard.

"He's a solid player," Wragge said of Matthews. "He's smart, he's intelligent, he knows how to make plays. You have to play flawless football against a player like that, I'm not overly concerned. Respect, but at the same time, I've got a job to do."

So does tight end Vernon Davis, but pass rushers like Matthews keep him from doing what he does best - run deep seam routes and go patterns.

When the pressure comes fierce, Vernon Davis is often asked to stay back to chip block a pass rusher. This leaves him to run more flare and screen routes than the deep ones that hurt defenses most.

"Clay is a tremendous athlete, he's definitely a mismatch for most linemen," Vernon Davis said. "But we're going to have to stop him. We're going to have to shut him down and take some of his specialties away."

If Matthews decodes Wragge's line call and gets past the front line, he'll run into Brian Westbrook and Anthony Dixon - the new co-running backs who must replace Pro Bowl starter Frank Gore, who is out for the year with a fractured hip.

It turns out Gore is considered one of the best blocking backs in the game. Westbrook, meanwhile, wasn't considered usable for three months because coaches said he didn't know the protection schemes. Same goes for Dixon, a rookie who hardly pass blocked in college.

It's going to take everybody to slow down Matthews, or no one will.

Who knows what will happen because money changes everything, but Jim Harbaugh pretty much said he wants to stay with Stanford just now on NBC bay area sports. Stanford is also doing their part to keep him around:

Stanford hopeful Harbaugh will stay

STANFORD, Calif. (AP)—Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby has made a pre-emptive offer to sweeten Jim Harbaugh’s contract before the coach even gets offered other jobs.

“We have a proposal in front of Jim and he’s indicated he plans to accept it,” Bowlsby said Sunday. “He’s got this year and four more on his contract. I expect that he will be our coach in the foreseeable future.”

Bowlsby spoke Sunday after the fifth-ranked Cardinal (11-1) accepted a bid to play in the Orange Bowl against Virginia Tech on Jan. 3, a remarkable turnaround from the 1-11 team Harbaugh took over four years ago.

Harbaugh quickly made the Cardinal competitive, winning four games his first year and five the following season before getting them to a bowl with an eight-win season in 2009.

Despite losing Heisman Trophy runner-up Toby Gerhart to the NFL, Harbaugh did even better this season. The Cardinal set a school record for wins, with the only loss being a 52-31 defeat at No. 2 Oregon on Oct. 2.

“That’s why this program has progressed, because guys have bought into what he’s saying and what he was preaching,” defensive lineman Sione Fua said. “And now we’re here four years later going to a BCS game.”

Harbaugh’s name has been mentioned as a possible NFL coach or for higher-profile college jobs, including his alma mater of Michigan if the Wolverines decide to fire Rich Rodriguez.

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon has said he will not make a decision on Rodriguez until after the Wolverines play in their bowl game Jan. 1.

“When you have high quality people you’re going to have others coming after him,” Bowlsby said. “Whether it’s the NFL or another university, we have to be prepared to make pre-emptive offers and do the things it takes to put tools in place that make Jim or any other coach want to stay here. In the case of a football coach, those things tend to be a little more expensive than with some of our other coaches.”

Harbaugh has said he will not talk about other jobs and is happy at Stanford.

Jon Gruden: ESPN’s effusive Monday Night Football analyst (“This guy!” “That guy!”), could be headed to San Francisco to coach the 49ers in 2012, according to his high school football-playing son, Deuce. In a podcast with The Sporting Rave, Deuce, a junior who plays QB and LB said (around the 5:00 mark), “he was going to let me finish high school … they were talking about going to San Francisco, but that’ll probably be in the next two years … or maybe Cleveland.” Does this mean the 49ers or Browns would be willing to give Mike Singletary and Eric Mangini (respectively), another year to get to the playoffs? Seems fair. Jay Glazer linked the 49ers and Gruden Sunday on Fox Sports.
