Conviction in the killing of Sam Kellerman
On October 12, 2004, writer Sam Kellerman (brother of boxing analyst Max Kellerman) was murdered. (His body was found on October 17). Butler was considered a suspect; he had been friends with Kellerman for ten years.
On October 20, Butler, accompanied by a lawyer, sought treatment for his alleged bipolar disorder.
Butler was arrested for the Kellerman slaying on October 27, and two days later, he pled not guilty to murder and arson. He was held on $1.25 million bail. Prosecutors claimed that Butler, the only suspect in the case, repeatedly struck Kellerman in the head with a hammer, then torched Kellerman's Hollywood, California apartment in an attempted coverup.
On July 8, 2005, a Los Angeles judge ruled that there was sufficient evidence for Butler to stand trial on the charges of murder and arson.
On March 27, 2006, Butler pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and arson in the 2004 death of Kellerman. On April 5, Butler was sentenced to 29 years, four months in prison by Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, according to Deputy Public Defender Jack Keenan[3].
The suspected motive for the murder was that Kellerman was forcing Butler to move out of Kellerman's apartment. Butler, who was struggling to revive his career and suffering through a difficult relationship with his girlfriend and child, picked up a hammer and killed Kellerman[4]
James Butler was a real piece of shit. Here is a short video of him sucker punching an opponent after he lost the fight when dude is just attempting to give him a hug:
I like Max, I don't know why everyone dislikes him.
The only thing that bothers me is that at times he will over emphasize things.
Sometimes he will take the smallest thing and pick it apart, it gets annoying.
Other than that, he's a great commentators and analyst.
But I don't like Max, and I think he's a punk. He let Sugar Shane get in the ring and talk after Mayweather beat Marquez up, and then when Mayweather was talking back, Max cut him off. I wanted to hear what Mayweather had to say since he let Shane get in the ring and talk.
Another thing is adam carolla invited Max Kellerman to watch the premiere of his new movie called The Hammer, not knowing about what happened to his brother.
On the floor lay a sportswriter beneath a blanket. On his skull were the wounds from 32 blows by a blunt instrument. Against the wall leaned a blood-spattered hammer.
It's not funny, but goddamn; if that wasn't real life, it would be. Funny.
I remember that story about his brother...that's a damn shame. Max is a very intelligent commentator, and I think he's pretty fair and unbiased. I enjoy listening to him almost as much as I enjoyed "Iron" Mike Tyson's great quotes throughout the years...
