I find most of the posting interesting and insightful. First and foremost, this isn't white on black crime. This was an officer who pulled out a gun for his saftey and the saftey for others around. Now, new reports have surfaced stating "he wasn't handcuff". This man has criminal history with the city of hayward..but i agree that doesn't give a right to shoot him.

We just elected a "black president"..do people in this world honestly believe that this stuff really happens. I personally think that people put themselves in certain situations and then get mad when something bad happens.

Did anyone in the Berkeley area get upset when a 'black officer" killed a "black woman"???? Oh wait, the new failed to report toxicology showed cociane and herion in her system.

I think people shouldn't always believe what the news reports. They attempt to be bias but are not. Just becuase there is video..doesn't prove someone is right or wrong. We do not know the situation the lead up to that moment or what was acutally being said. Of course of his family and friends are going to be heartbroken and saddened by this and get angry.

All im saying it just look at it from the other side. And the people who "don't like or hate cops"..please don't call 911 when u need them..let someone else who respects and honors them..recieve their help and not you.

R U FUCKIN KIDDING ME, I CANT BELIEVE THERE IS PEOPLE LIKE THIS, THIS STUPID.

I can top this - look at some of the comments I found on Huffington post.com (one of the most liberal news websites on the net):

Always about the black man being opressed, beaten down, under someone's thumb, not getting a break, not getting a fair shake. Get out of the ghetto and maybe moving to mayberry U,S,A this would not happen

Part of the problem is black men tend to be highly combative when it comes to police authority. When a police officer tells me to get on the ground with my hands over my head that is exactly what I'm going to do. In typical interaction a black defendant will get very hostile, demand to know why he is being arrested BEFORE he will comply. If he is told the reason he wants to debate the validity of the arrest rather than comply. If he is told to get on the ground he will often resist aggressively to prove to his friends he isn't a "punk". It gets people killed.

People still dont get that class and race still have alot to do with how people are treated in this country. Whats great , however, that amnesty international and the naacp are getting involved in this case. The Cop resigned today, without making a statement and that really complicates things but we have to make sure we do not give up on this issue at ALL. Thank you all who came out tonight in the cold to march the streets of Oakland. Our voices MUST be heard.
There is also a planned takeover of the Bart meeting tommorrow morning 1/8/09 344 20th st. in Oakland @am.

A planned takeover of the Bart Meeting? What the fuck is that gonna do? Sometimes I think people only protest because its the trendy thing to do. A man has lost his life, a family is grieving, the situation is being investigated and you think taking over the Bart meeting is gonna speed up the process? There has been hundreds of thousands of protests over the years for different causes; from war to gays from rodney king to civil rights and most of them protests be them peaceful or violent do not result in anything but more people going to jail. Unfortunately the majority of our generation; black, white, brown, purple etc. does not no how to keep anything peaceful which gives the entire case a negative look. We go breaking shit up, acting a fool and the rest of America looks on and makes excuses to why this poor kid deserved to be shot. How about instead of your planned "takeover" you organize an event with some high profile people ie: mucisians, actors, naacp, teachers, politicians whomever to attend and get this case as much publicity as it can possibly get without the violence. Then they will have no choice but to examine the issue and make sure justice is served. What the fuck is wrong with people? Interrupting innocent peoples lives is resolve to an innocent man being killed? An eye for an eye solves everything right? All this protest is doing is taking the focus off of the situation at hand. Its not even about Oscar anymore, its about ignorant individuals tearing up Oakland. A press conference is going to be held by the police but guess what? Its not about the killing, its about the protest. Congrats you guys r famous. This is not a diss to your ideas of resolve just more ideas. We need to keep this in mind though, its been 6 days. This is a process. What exactly r we protesting? Peace to everyone

You are joking right? protest does nothing? I dont even know where and how to tackle that statement but let me at least. Protest is something that is apart of American history starting from the Boston Tea Party to our present day. It is the right to organize and speak freely that MANY countries do not have. PROTEST was the vehicle of change during the civil rights movement because it brought attention to what was going on and because of how local governments reacted there was no way the federal government could ignore the issue of civil rights which eventually lead to legislation which ended jim crow law in the south. Protest brought attention to the dissent amongst the american people during the vietnam war and had a lot to do with not only the resignation of LBJ but the END of the war. Protest by a single man in Tienaman square against tanks brought INTERNATIONAL attention to how citizen were being treated in the Republic of China and eventually had an effect on their own policies. PROTEST in the face of death and violence brought international attention to Apartheid in South Africa and the organization of people there of every color ended that oppressive system. Protest by Gahndi and his followers ended British Colonialism in India. Protest by the the Third Estate in France ushered in the idea of liberty for the whole western world. Even when a peaceful protest ends in violence or when it is straight out RIOTS brings attention to the issue and best believe brings about eventual policy change. The Riots in LA in our lifetime brought to the forefront of the American conversation the issue of Race that was only being discussed within the realms of academia. The riots that followed MLK's death made the government move swiftly to pass legislation. Greece just finished days of riots in reaction to the death of a young man by the hand of police. It brought world wide attention and now Greece is looking at reform in its own police force. I am not advocating violence- protest violent or non violent- DOES BRING CHANGE.

In our current issue there is a mistrust amongst the youth and minorities in the Bay Area and the Police. There is a history of excessive force , police brutality, and police conducted executions in The Bay Area; especially Oakland. We can not leave it up to BART or the city attorney and local government to resolve this issue. The NAACP and Amnesty International are both asking for an investigation by the state to happen. This can not happen again and showing up at that meeting shows that we mean business. I do not need star power for my voice to be heard; I feel sorry for you that you do not feel like your voice has power but I know mine does.

Love, rage, and solidarity.

I just got done saying that a protest will not solve anything but if you're gonna protest then make it peaceful. Martin Luther King led peaceful protests and we elected Barack Obama president 45 years later. Does it work? Maybe not but neither does this. I'm watching an innocent man on the news who just said and I quote "I came outside just now and my car was on fire and burning up..however, its just a car, an innocent young man lost his life a week ago and Im more upset about that." They burned up this mans car and he is on our side!!! Good move smart guys.

It helped in greece last month.
maybe it did... I'm not educated on that situation so I dunno

I have no problem with protesting

but it should be peaceful

they expected everyone to go out there and a act a fool... IMO this could only do 2 things... increase the tension between law enforcement and the minorities in Oakland... and increase the stereotypes that people hold

but I could be wrong... just my 2 cents... I hope a positive change can come from this.. we'll see what happens

Did you just get through saying that even if a protest ends in a riot and violence that it will still result in policy change? U serious? Well in that case then killing this innocent man will also result in policy change. So maybe we should also encourage other police to shoot and kill innocent men so we can change policy. Look I agree with some shit you said and its all good when done in a peaceful manner. Civil rights protests were organized, not violent. MLK was not gettin Hyphy and shakin his dreds for the channel 4 news.
