Sabean tells Pablo to "shape up or ship out"
Giants general manager Brian Sabean sent a message to Pablo Sandoval on Friday:

Shape up or ship out.

Sebean told reporters that the Kung Fu Panda will start next year in the minors if he doesn't get his act together and lose some weight (which makes me very curious as to why Pablo would pose for the picture on the right just a few days ago when he was dining with his family at Buca di Beppo after the World Series parade in San Francisco).

The Giants made every effort to slim Sandoval down last offseason, but it didn't work. The 24-year-old is still huge, only now his numbers aren't. This offseason, the Giants will give Sandoval various benchmarks throughout the winter and ask him to report to spring training a month early. Sandoval's potential is obvious, but he has an uphill battle to climb back to respectability.

After hitting .330 with 25 homers in 2009, Sandoval slumped to .268 with 13 homers in 2010. The Giants benched him midway through the postseason after he proved to be a liability both offensively and defensively.

If we didn't have Aaron "$60 Million" Rowand...the G's could make a serious move for someone like Crawford or Werth. Don't think Oooribe is going to get the multi-year deal he wants here in SF. We'll see.

Some new info, I like the way Sabean is thinking:

-- As the front office mulls its options at shortstop, it will weigh free-agent options (including Juan Uribe) against the possibility of Brandon Crawford being promoted some time in 2011. Crawford clearly needs more work in the minors at the plate. He strikes out way too much. But his defense is considered big-league-ready.

Sabean expects Crawford to start the year in the minors to work on his hitting, but he could be a midseason promotion.

-- Same probably goes for Brandon Belt, though Sabean suggested Belt could force his way onto the team out of spring training. The organization is leaning toward keeping him at first base even though it experimented with him in the outfield.

I don't know...I kind of want Pat to stay for another year with the Giants, his knowledge and talks with the players about wanting to win works.

Renteria...I say he needs to retire, he did good in the postseason tho. But he has to move on and just retire...

Huff & Uribe....Giants need to keep those two...to me they are the base of the team...

staring pitching and posey are the base of the team, not 2 journeyman who had career years, sorry....
well that's not what Sabean thinks...he wants those two to stay as Giants..

and Saben is also keeping an eye on Jeter.....something tells me Jeter MIGHT become a SF Giants member....

ESPN: Edgar Renteria not retiring this year

ORLANDO -- Edgar Renteria, the 2010 World Series MVP, has decided against retirement and will return for at least one more year in Major League Baseball.

"I'm staying, I feel that I still have a lot of baseball in my body," Renteria said Saturday to ESPNdeportes.com from his home in Miami.

"[On] Monday I have a very important meeting with my agents to talk about my future, but I have already decided I will keep playing. That's all I can say until I meet with them," Renteria said.

Renteria, 34, had hinted he could retire after the 2010 season, when he had three stints on the disabled list and appeared in only 72 games for the San Francisco Giants.

But the Colombian-born shortstop played great defense and averaged .412 with two homers and six RBIs to lead the Giants to their first World Championship in 56 years and their first title since moving West from New York in 1958.

Renteria was the first South American player and eighth Latino to win an MVP Award in the World Series. Roberto Clemente, from Puerto Rico, was the first one in 1971.

In 1997, Renteria had a walk-off RBI hit in the 11th inning of the seventh game of the World Series for the Florida Marlins against the Cleveland Indians. His three-run homer against Rangers' lefty Cliff Lee in the seventh inning of the fifth game in this year's Series buried Texas en route to the World Series trophy.

The Giants declined last week to exercise their $9.5 million option on Renteria, which leaves him eligible to negotiate with any of the other 29 major league teams.

During his 15-year career in the majors, Renteria, a five-time All-Star, has a career average of .287 and has won two Golden Glove awards while playing for Florida, St. Louis, Boston, Atlanta, Detroit and San Francisco.
