i honestly feel that being independent is the way to go. when you're independent, you can only expect a certain amount of love because your label is not in bed with all the media outlets like a major distributor. another advanage is: creative control - you're not a puppet just rapping shit cause some CEO wants you to. you might not get air play but you'll make your money. and if you're in it for the money, you're not any better than the greedy major labels trying to profit from the rap game.
speaking of folks fucking up the game for the paper... there's too many. and about 98% of these folks are average rappers/producers that aren't explosive - they don't stand out from the bunch; there's nothing revolutionary about them. i understand we all want to be heard and there's room for all of us, but why not unite? instead of lighting small fires, why not light a gargantous one? like mac dre said in his last interview: about the huge network that looks out for each other.
and what happened to the CALIFORNIA LOVE?! cali seems to be divided not only city-wise, but northern/southern-wise. unity = strength.

The West Coast seems like they comin back some what, I mean with Baby Bash being on MTV and E-40 signing with Lil Jon, I think we might see some improvment in the next couple years.
e40 and baby bash wont be able to bring the west coast back. and thought they may be tight i dont think the dogg pound will either. i still think mac dre was the only one with good potential. i think its an interesting topic to think about but it doesnt really bother me that the west isnt commercial anymore. its the type of music being played that i think is the problem with the mainstream. its jsut bad

you can be the best rapper the world has ever seen.. but if nobody likes you.. then you wont be considered shit

people whine all day long about the bay not gettin love.. bay artists seem comfortable on the level they at.. it shows in the music.. they aint tryna do shit different.. same old shit in different voices.. same old shit.. its like we strivin to be the 6th man

radio plays a major part in it.. artists out here with songs on the radio (keak, team, mess, 40) sell better then everybody else.. its the same thing in the national game yall

music industry aint about whos the best.. its about who will bring a label more money.. until the labels see money in the bay they wont sign anybody.. niggaz out here dont even support the shit.. how the fuck they expect a major label to put money on it

its the MUSIC BUSINESS
making music is the EASY part

bay rap game is uninspiring...
i know a couple of producers moving out of the area because they simply aint about to make the money they deserve in the saturated rap game we got out here.. everybody n they mama rappin.. and everybody n they mama holdin up space at rasputins.. and 99 percent of these niggaz is WEAK.. i dont give a fuck how 'dumb' it went.. in terms of what i look for in a rapper.. flow, lyrics, song writing ability, ELEVATION (like i sed niggaz is all on the same shit) 99 % of these niggaz is weak.. thats how it is plain n simple

we need to step out game up.. niggaz can whine on a message board all day.. then wont buy ONE bay album all year.. the south supports they artists.. niggaz sellin 500,000 with no radio or video.. and how much do we sell?? majors aint fuckin with the bay right now.. aint no money to be made with us.. who finna buy the albums? the same people who WASNT buyin them when they was INDIE?

shit is weak.. im thinkin bout travelin more often to new york, LA & atlanta for contacts.. music game is about who you know.. no industry people in the bay

Name one rapper in history that ever sold 500,000 with no radio or video play lol. You have no clue what you're talkin bout. South rappers barely go platinum in the first place. the only ones goin platinum are Luda, lil jon, and outkast other than that if you check soundcan they all be goin gold or less. Its just that they get radio play so evereybody think they sellin like crazy. Name one south artist that debuted at number one in the last couple years? It aint been none, not luda, not lil jon noe of em. Yet game debuted at number one and he's from the west. Dont let the radio fool ya.

Its funny how aint nobody checkin for the Bay but im doin an internship for Interscope records and on everything in the world the region wit the most buzz and record heads starin to pay attention to is the Bay. You can take that for what you want but i know what people are sayin behind the scenes and the bay/westcoast is about to be in full swing again trust me. Remember a movement doesn't happen over night it takes time to develop. So instead of everybody complaining and shit just shut the fuck up, relax and let the shit happen.

Oh and everybody in every city, in every region in america wants to be a rapper and 99% of them are wack. So please everybody stop sayin the shit like its just a Bay thing cuz its not.

Now someone close this gay ass thread because in reality the fact that this thread is even still alive is the reason why the westcoast is where it's right now.

I could be wrong, but correct me if am. I use to say politics as of last week but as Sic Wit it stated, the game has changed and you have to change with time. magic Johnson, Worthy and kareem abdul Jabbar couldn't play with the Kobe's & Shaq's, after being in the game for some years, pass the torch, move down to management.

You can't blame B-12 or a distributor, the Internet, bootleggin for the dcrease of your success, it's all in the change of time. We went from bell bottom jeans, to Sean Johns

It's cool to listen to the Killa Tays, C-Bo's, Homocide, Bumpin Tee, Too Short, but todays generation wants Messy Marv, San Quinn, T-Nutty, C-Lim, etc...

I'm an O.G. in the game and I use to blame everybody for the West being fucc'd in the game, but keep it real, it's just not our time. I say it all the time, history repeats itself, so we'll be bacc soon, so until then, enjoy the ride.

Alot of artist thought the money will continue to come, but they never thought about a rainy day, I don't no one Indi artist that invested there money into Real Estate, I.R.A. account, Life insurance, etc...Not sayin none didn't, but I doubt if 10% even thought about it, now they're cryin about the game. Pac has the Pac Estates, Pac and I have the same business Lawyer out of Los Angels, how many Indi artist put away for a rainy day? I no plenty that put away for a daily CHRONIC BREAK, $100 aday, do the math, now they're crying over shit they could've controled when there career was at an all time high. GO BACC TO THE TRUNK ARTIST!!!!!!!!!!!!, it's costing you less then a $1 to press your shit yourself, E-40 and short paved the way, the game, except 5$-7 for your project, far as O.G. rappers, learn the game cuzz, learn the business and go from there.

I'm so sick of hearin' these supposedly oppressed rappers blame MTV, BET and other media outlets for their failures! Did it ever cross your mind that you might not be as hot as you think? Maybe you just ain't half the hustler you think you are. It's more likely that these cats are trying to be in a game that they just ain't suited for. The game ain't for everyone. Obviously.

The west coast fell off for several reasons and honestly, they're losin' right now because they earned it. You can't molest the game and think there won't be any reprocusions. You can't flood it and expect for people not to drown. It ain't some kind of anti-west conspiracy like some of you think and you can't blame the internet and bootlegging either because the west ain't been hot for years now.

It ain't 1993 anymore and cats need to let it go! It's almost funny that people are still trying to master a sound from 10 years ago when the rest of the world has moved on. While they're busy struggling to be a part of the past, theres a new generation of young talent thats building the future. Might as well dust off your suade puma's with the fat laces and your best pair of parachute pants (if they still fit) while you're at it!

If your team ain't winning, you gotta be smart enough to know when to change the players if you ever want to get a ring. The west needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. Period. Cats are ready for new faces and a new sound.

If you cats want to talk about this subject then let's talk about it for real.
dust off your suade puma's lol

YUPPERZ, YOU GOT THAT RIGHT. BEING INDEPENDENT IS GOOD FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT MORE CONTROL OF THEIR IMAGE AND WHO LIKE BEING THE BOSS ON MAJOR ISSUES. NOW, YOU CAN EASILY SEE IN B.E.T. OR MTV WHICH ARTISTS ARE PUPPETS OR DON'T WRITE THEIR OWN LYRICS. INDEPENDENT ARTISTS WRITE THEIR OWN LYRICS, KNOW HOW TO MAKE THEIR OWN BEATZ, AND KNOW HOW TO PROMOTE THEIR OWN CONCERTS. ITS ALL ABOUT SAVING MONEY TO MAKE MONEY WHEN YOU ARE AN INDEPENDENT SO HAVING A LOT OF SKILLS IS PART OF THE PACKAGE. MAINSTREAM ARTISTS DON'T HAVE THAT MOST OF THE TIME. I WOULD SAY 60-70% IS HELPLESS WITHOUT THEIR MAINSTREAM LABEL. FOR REALZ, SOME OF THEM RELY TOO MUCH ON OTHER CATZ WRITING THEIR LYRICS AND THEN THEN TAKE ALL THE CREDIT WHEN IT TURNS PLATINUM. STR8 SAVAGE, BUT MONEY TALKS. ONE THING IS A FACT, THERE IS A LOT OF GHOSTWRITERS FROM THE BAY WHO BE WRITING LYRICS FOR EAST COAST CATZ THAT BE GETTING NO CREDIT ON THE CD, BUT STILL GET SOME ROYALTIES ON THE TRACK. FOR ME, I RATHER GET THE CREDIT FOR WRITING THE LYRIC AHEAD OF THE ROYALTIES.

one good news that they Bay can rely on is that the bay is makin money writing lyrics and makin' beatz for East Coast Catz as Ghostwriters. but, i hear all this talk about the production value being not at the mainstream level and I think its a bunch of confusion. what makes a mainstream beat is not the engineering editing style within the layers of the track, but if the mainstream can relate the message within the beatz. if you speak the truth of the streetlife in your album , then that album should definately be at the same league as any Roc-a-fella album.fosho.Liers always will get caught for not speakin the truth of their lifestyle, and real hustlas will get that paper when the truth is sold, and not given for free.

Wrong. 'Speaking the truth' has nothing to do with mainstream appeal. People, the vast majority anyway, don't give a fuck about the truth. If they did, 99% of these rappers wouldn't be allowed to call themselves thugs, killas, hustlas and pimps. Music is entertainment and all that matters is whether or not the listener is being entertained. The idea of 'street credibility' is a gimmick too and y'all mutha fuckas eat it up, just like you're supposed to.

Whats funny to me is seeing the so-called 'underground' or anti-mainstream fans trying to separate themselves from the so-called 'brainwashed' mainstream fans when all these cats are influenced by fads and prejudice. Shit couldn't be any more ridiculous.

And by the way, rap music relates to life in general, not just street life.

if youre talking about underground anti mainstream fans who listen to mistah fab and keak da sneak then i agree. cause to me it sounds like the same bullshit. but when talking about fans who listen to zion i, the coup, blackalicious and after listening to artists like that cant stand having to listen to the laffy taffy guys or the finger snapping shit, thats no fad or prejudice, its just simply good music over bad. sorry if thats too opinionated, but i cant think of any other way to put it.
