The point I was making is that, this is how White America justifies itself as not being racist, because of the few people they let in. And, yes, it is sad that Tiger Woods, among others, have to conform to become apart of the mainstream. I mean, look at Michael Vick. Before this Dog fighting thing bit him in the ass, almost literally, he decided to shave his cornrows, as a way to change the perception some people had about him. Obviously, at this point, corn rows are the last thing on his mind, but at the time, just another subtle reminder, who is in charge in this country.

They do have to conform in a sense, but they want people to conform to an upper eschelon of society. They wouldn't let some golfer be all white trashed out either would they? Tiger woods is different, because he's playing a game that's associated with the upper class and country clubs, just like tennis is. You look at people like shaq, who hasn't really changed his image at all and still acts a fool and people love him but that's different because he's a bball player and not a golfer. Same goes for a lot of bball players.

Vick shaving his cornrows has more to do with looking presentable and clean cut than it does abandoning black america. It just looks cleaner to have that style of haircut than to have braids of any sort. At that point, he needed all the help he could get as far as his appearance. That was no different than wearing a suit to court instead of a tall tee and some nikes. It was a court case for his freedom, nothing more

Yes, he would be in the same position, as far as golf goes. But, in terms of socially, he would not be where he is at. Again, the point is, whether the few Black's able to transcend to mainstream America, are acting or being themselves, the point is, White society must embrace them, in order for them to be accepted. Then, when White's let that one African American in, guess what, they say, "We arent racist" or "if Colin Powell can do it, all black men can do it", which is BS.

It is sorta like someone defending President Bush. Ya, he put Conde Rice and Colin Powell in very high positions of power in his cabinet. So, to his backers, that means no way he is racist against other blacks, cuz look at those two "success stories". Again, its the group that i am looking at. In sociology, there will always be exceptions, because sociology studies groups of people.

Ya know I think it depends on the region you are studying, and on numerous other variables. But, I think the ones that are given the key to mainstream success have figured out that, although they may not be able to change their skin color, they can alter their behavior to conform. But, yes, your question is a valid one, and depends on the group of people you are discussing.

Im discussing black Americans as a whole.

Tiger Woods, Oprah Winfrey, Ol Condy, and Colin Powell have conformed and are therefore no longer functionally black. Their lack of opposition to the system makes them no longer in touch with black people and black values.

Which means that Black people define themselves in opposition to mainstream society. I'm not going to blame black people for it, or say that I don't understand why it is this way. I'm only going to say that this is the reality.

If I described myself as anti-black would you want to deal with me? Would you want to work with me, accept me into your social circle, etc? No. Obviously not. Yet Black people want to have it both ways. They want to both challenge and reject the current system while on the same hand asking to be accepted and aided by it.

The most highly educated group in America, believe it or not, is Black West Indies and African immigrants. They obviously experience the same racism and discrimination that African-Americans do, yet their attitude about it and how to deal with it is completely different.

If, as according to many black scholars, being even 1/2 or 1/4 black will subject you to anti-black racism, there has to be an acknowledgement that African immigrants must experience at least most of the same racial barriers or otherwise white-constructed obstacles to black success.
