I havent fought in 6, 7 years.

You reach a point where it becomes police, lawsuits, etc. Just not worth it.

Id like to think if it came down to it I can still throw down. But im a pretty big dude so it usually dont get to that. Somebody better have nuts if they really wanna take it there.

But really its the vibe you put out - I havent had a real reason to fight for a long ass time.

I studied jeet kun do in high school so I'm kinda rusty but that made me a decently well rounded fighter. Boxing is my favorite sport so I got involved. I was going to go pro but found out my neck is messed up pretty bad and multiple doctors said if I boxed that there's a good chance I could end up paralyzed. I have 2 sons so I decided to listen to the doctors advice though I was reluctant at first. That's how I got in to training other people.

In a fight though, it's whatever works. Bruce Lee really kinda preached that jeet kun do isn't a style because it assumes all styles. That's kinda how I am I guess and focus more on self defense than looking for fights.
That's messed up about your neck man, I would be devastated if I couldn't do what I love most anymore because of an injury.
I bet you teach your two boys how to fight (or at least when they get the age).
If I will have a son one day that is what I would do too. Pump everything I know about fighting in to this kid.

Most of it is self defense, even though we are thought to throw the first punch when someone invades your personal space. But it is still self defense.
oooh the fun of training.... I haven't been in a street fight since my teen years. So I don't know how I will handle myself.
I would think pretty well but luck is also a factor in the outcome. .and knowing myself someone probably would pick a fight with me when I have a terrible day.
And then you still can lose from somebody who has never set foot inside a gym in his life.

there ain't nothing like testing your own limits and fighting from the shoulders. but like white devil said, there comes a point where the cons just outweigh the pros. too many pussys out there that can't take an ass whooping like a man.

Believe me, I still considered fighting. I only had like 2 months of formal boxing training but I had a fire inside me to be a boxer. No one had to motivate me to want to be good. I dreamed of it, literally. I would get up and run before work and do abs then work out as soon as I got off of work too. I spent a better part of 3 years really teaching myself as much as I could on my own because I couldn't afford a boxing gym membership in San Diego ($75 a month, wth???!?) and got back to Oklahoma City and the gym was free. Started training and found out that I was better than I even thought I could be. I went to a chiropractor first and she said my neck has a reverse curve and goes the wrong way. I thought she was lying to get more money out of me. She said the discs were literally breaking down on their own and one punch could cause bone spurs. I went to another chiropractor and didn't even bring it up, he literally gave me the same freakin speach that the other one did and said I should never box again. He said he even had a friend with a similar situation and ended up in a wheelchair for awhile or some crap. I still thought I was gonna box but I looked at my son and decided it wasn't worth it.

My oldest son has literally been watching boxing since he could see and liked it a lot but I hope he never wants to fight. I'll do my best to talk him out of it. If years go by and he's still serious, I'll train him to the best of my abilities. Either way, I'd like them to take martial arts because of the self discipline and self confidence that they earn. Infinitely useful to a young boy and those lessons stay with them forever

@ Chris, it sucks to have such an injury man. I can relate to how you feel when you say you still want to fight/spar.

Maybe you can train the muscles around that area a bit more so they can give more support when needed... I think it will also help you out when you get older.

You could try going with your sons to judo first. That's also what I did when I was 7 until I was 10.
The important thing for the young ones is to have fun.
And with judo they also learn how to break their fall.. something I picked up in those 3 years I still do today. Very handy!

the problem is, I have a lot of pain in my neck and the muscles down to my shoulders. The first doctor thought that she could help it some but the other said there isn't much that could be done because it's the disc's that are in bad shape

they didn't know. I think it might've been from being lazy lol I used to post up in bed or on the couch and watch tv or play video games with like 4 pillows so my neck would be pushed forwards for hours at a time. That's the only thing I could come up with that might've done it.

yeah, the back/neck is vulnerable for stuff like that.

Pretty ironic though... you train to fight any man in your way... and you get taken out by a bunch of pillows....

I recently had a conversation with my dad about something like that.. It was about the "weird things" in life/training (he is one of my teachers).
He told me 'you can train and train all you want, you can beat the biggest man there is but one day something as small as a bacteria can destroy you, and with all your training... there is nothing you can do about it, you can't even see the enemy."

yeah... what can you do...
