Gangs of New York

Had to wash out the taste of Cape Fear from my mouth with a good Scorsese film. About 45 mins too long and the ending is very anti-climactic/dramatic at the same damn time. The overall message was a bit heavy handed as well but still overall a really good film.

Memento

Classic, probably still my favorite Nolan film. Love films that play with time and perception like this.
9/10

the Usual Suspects

Hate slow action flicks like this, a lot of potential for great and exciting scenes squandered on an easy to figure out who-done-it. Lackluster overall.

^I sure as fuck did, mad overrated.

The Thing

Great directing & pacing. Kind of cheesy compared to these days but Carpenter's work holds up. End was pretty weak tho.

A Serious Man

Jesus fucking christ, this movie was TERRIBLE. It just meanders aimlessly for 100 mins with no pay off, no redemption & it never gets particularly funny. Fuck this movie.
1/10

The Box

Not exactly bad but I felt the whole way that the director was trying to make another Donnie Darko again and it felt less genuine because of it. The whole first half is pretty uneventful and slow too. It got better tho.

THEY LIVE

Holy shit, I love that movie. I haven't seen it in years. I don't think I've ever seen the whole thing.

Anyway, there's a few action sequences that are fucking terrible, but that's because they spent all their fighting budget on Piper and Keith's fight scene. That entire sequence makes the movie. The political views expressed in the film I didn't realize have influenced much of my adult life from a young age. It has its issues, and I overlook them because it's an awesome film.

Naked

I've started going through Mike Leigh's films and this seems to be his darkest. Cruel is the perfect word to describe it. A very strange film with the most unlikable yet charismatic lead I think I ever seen. It also gets quite existential at times. Just a strange and amazing movie, a new favorite of mine.

Cape Fear

Never knew Scorsese directed this, so I gave it a chance. Not his best work by a long shot and it's pretty hard to tell what are genre tropes he's harking back to and what parts are genuinely cheesy lol. Pacino's southern accent irked me and Nolte or the rest of the main cast didn't give particularly strong performances. 6/10

Inglourious Basterds

Finally got around to this. Contains some of Tarantino's best work as a director to date, also some of his shoddiest. Pretty uneven and that unfortunately holds it back from being as great as it could be imo. The first act and the bar scene are outstanding tho. Christoph Waltz was to this film as Heath Ledger was to the Dark Knight. Probably his 3rd best film to date but I still want to see the long cut of Kill Bill 1 & 2 put together they were showing in LA for a while.
7/10

The Silence of The Lambs

Classic, not much to say, great pacing, plot & character development. Parts do seem a bit cheesy but it's hard to tell if it just didn't age well or it's because they've been spoofed and parodied countless times over the years.

Pffft. Terrible man, just turrible. First off, it's not an action flick, it's a mystery crime drama so if you were expecting to see an action movie, you fucked up. Secondly, even if you knew from the get go who done it, the acting, directing, everything about the movie was done extremely well. Third, keep in mind this movie came out in 1995. Kevin Spacey for example was pretty much unknown and this was back at a time when he was doing awesome roles (he was in Seven which came out later the same year). Kevin Spacey kinda turned gay over the years and does some shitty/faggoty movies now, but back then this was his real breakout role that made him famous.

Anyways, could the movie be overrated? Sure, by some (just like all highly rated films) but overall it was a fine piece of work and definitely deserves at least a 7-8.

Arthur was on TV and I like Get Him To The Greek with the same dude in it, so I thought I give it a shot and was hoping for some laughs. Had to turn it off 15 minutes in. It was fuckin painful. 1/10
