KINGS SIGN FREE AGENT JOHN SALMONS

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. – The Sacramento Kings today signed free agent guard John Salmons to a multi-year contract, it was announced by Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. Per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We’re excited to add a versatile player like John to our team,” said Petrie. “He can play three positions. We feel he’s still an emerging player in the NBA. He’ll add to the youth and overall skill level of our backcourt, and I’m really looking forward to watching him play for the Kings.”

Salmons, a four-year NBA veteran, averaged 7.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 25.1 minutes per game last season for Philadelphia through 82 games, of which he started 24. He shot .420 percent from the field and .775 percent from the free-throw line.

Selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round (26th overall) of the 2002 NBA Draft, Salmons was acquired by the Sixers in a draft-night trade with the Spurs with Mark Bryant and the draft rights to Randy Holcomb for Speedy Claxton (6/26/02).

The 6-7, 207-pound guard has averaged 5.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 281 career games with Philadelphia, while shooting .406 percent from the field and .765 percent from the free-throw line. Salmons has posted four double-doubles for his career, two points-assists and two points-rebounds. He has scored 20 points or more three times, including a career-high 23 points versus Toronto (3/17/06). Salmons was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2003 Reebok Pro Summer League in Boston. He has appeared in eight games in two trips to the playoffs.

Salmons set career-highs last season (2005-06) in games played, games started, field goals made and attempted, free-throws made and attempted, free-throw percentage, offensive, defensive and total rebounds, assists, steals, points and scoring average.

Salmons enjoyed a stellar career at the University of Miami, where he started 107-straight games, the second-highest streak in school history. He tied teammate Elton Tyler for most games played in school history (124) and ranked third in career assists (433) and steals (192), and 13th in scoring (1,287). Salmons is the only player in Hurricane history to record at least 50 steals in three consecutive seasons (1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02). He was honored with the Big East Sportsmanship Award as a senior.

This might turn out to be a great move. Bonzi is known to play great in contract years and then go back into hiding once the deal is done. I like this move cause Salmons could be a diamond in the rough. He is a 2 guard and never had a real chance playing behind AI1 and AI2. Plus, if Wells intended on coming back to Sac, he would have signed a long time ago. I think he will hit decline anyway pretty soon.

From what I understand its not a money issue with signing Wells. Its the length of the contract they can't agree on. I think Wells wants a 5-6 year and the Kings want to give him 2-3. Teams now a days are scared to give people big contracts since Erick Dampier. Personally I think Wells plays hard all the time and deserves it. Some people think he only played like that because it was his contract year, who knows. All I know is he was bustin his ass even when the Kings never had chance, before Artest came. The mixture of them 2 is somethin serious. So I hope we keep him, but it ain't lookin good.

Right on for that article homie. Well shit looks like I had it backwards. The length was no issue. It was the money that there was a problem with. I could see why Bonzi wants more than the Kings offered him. I mean 7 mill ain't shit in the NBA when you see someone like Adonal Foyle makin 13 mill. I know he's a big man and all but shit Bonzi is one of the most physical 2 guards in the league and he was more like our center. He had to pick up Brad Miller's slack constantly. I can't count how many times he out rebounded him. Off subject here we need to trade Brad Miller while he still has some decent value, I hate that guy.

No we shouldn't get rid a miller unless we get another center for him.
He's the only one we got!
Well actually if I remember correctly one of those guys we got for skinner is a center (or maybe both I don't know) but they suck ass and they never play anyway.
