Buster Posey (ankle) has passed a big hurdle in his recovery, catching bullpen sessions in the instructional league.
Posey, who is making his way back from reconstructive left ankle surgery, is ahead of schedule. San Francisco originally set Nov. 1 as a target date to begin catching again. "He's been feeling good and progressing well, so there was no reason to wait," Giants head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said. Posey has also been taking batting practice in a cage and will soon face live pitching. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said last month that there is a "100 percent" chance Posey will remain at catcher in 2012. We won't know if Posey is completely healed until spring training begins, but all news about his recovery has been positive thus far.

PHOENIX -- Freddy Sanchez said he "is fully expecting to be ready for opening day" following season-ending right-shoulder surgery in August, but Giants manager Bruce Bochy and G.M. Brian Sabean already have discussed the need for insurance at second base.

Bochy said he liked Sanchez's optimism when the second baseman visited the club Sunday, but "I think you have to cover yourself. Brian and I have talked about that already. It's not the first surgery on his shoulder, either. No question, you need a plan there."

Jeff Keppinger and Mike Fontenot are among 13 Giants eligible for arbitration; It's likely the club will seek to jump the process with take-it-or-leave-it offers, as it did when Fontenot signed for $1 million last winter.

Minnesota Twins outfielder Michael Cuddyer is expected to be a free-agent target, too. The Giants explored trading for him to play second base after Sanchez dislocated his shoulder June 10.

Before Sanchez had surgery, he tried to rehab for nearly two months and was encouraged at how his swing felt. But it was "all pain, no velocity" when he tried to throw from 60 feet. He had labrum and rotator-cuff repairs done and was hopeful his arm strength will return. If not, he said he'd learn to compensate.

Javier Lopez and the Giants have agreed to an $8.5 million, two-year contract, according to the Associated Press.
The 34-year-old was set to hit free agency before San Francisco locked him up. He'll earn $4.25 million in each of the next two seasons after earning $2.375 million in 2011. Lopez is 7-2 with a 2.38 ERA in 97 appearances since being acquired from Pittsburgh in 2010. The Giants must decide by Monday whether to exercise the $5 million contract option on fellow left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt, who had a 2.63 ERA in 67 appearances this season. Affeldt, who sustained a season-ending hand injury in September, has a $500,000 buyout.

yeah very smart to lock him up.

Buster Posey has been running sprints at nearly full strength without any discomfort in his surgically-repaired left ankle.
Posey has also been taking batting practice and catching bullpen sessions for the last six weeks. "It was a pretty traumatic injury," he said. "To be five months out, I'm pretty happy where I am. When I was in San Francisco thinking about what I'd be doing at this time, I was thinking I'd just start to be running, or start to be hitting off a coach throwing. I've been doing that for four or five weeks now." Barring any setbacks, Posey should enter spring training at 100 percent.

Giants exercised Jeremy Affeldt's $5 million club option for 2012.
Affeldt would have been owed a $500,000 buyout if the Giants declined. It's the second transaction the club made Sunday concerning a left-handed reliever after inking Javier Lopez to a $8.5 million, two-year contract. San Francisco has single-handedly dried up a weak lefty free agent market, but has now devoted $9.25 million to Lopez and Affeldt for the 2012 season. Affeldt, 32, posted a 2.63 ERA and 54/24 K/BB ratio over 61 2/3 innings in 2011. The southpaw needed season-ending surgery in early-September after cutting his non-throwing hand in a kitchen accident. He should have no trouble getting back to 100 percent health by the start of spring training.

I just went to their forum and it looks like someone just suggested that but there's nothing behind it. MLBtraderumors doesn't have anything either. I don't think i'd do that trade. Gary Brown will be up here sooner rather than later and trading away Dirty and Pill, who hit pretty damn good when he was called up, is a waste.

It appears that the Giants are more likely to spend on a center fielder than a shortstop like Jose Reyes or Jimmy Rollins, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com (on Twitter). MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes recently suggested Coco Crisp, Grady Sizemore and David DeJesus could be options for San Francisco this offseason.
