The Giants might not have room to promote 1B/OF prospect Brandon Belt in September.
The team's 40-man roster is currently full, so they'll have to weigh the option of removing someone just so they can get a look at Belt for a few weeks. He wouldn't get much playing time in those few weeks, either. Belt, who is batting .358-20-103 over three minor league levels, is a candidate for a starting job next season.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy thinks that that Tim Lincecum's and Pablo Sandoval's production has been held back due to their conditioning.
"Really, the biggest goal is to get them in the best condition they've ever been in," Bochy said. "In this game, I don't think players should ever feel they've arrived. They should always seek to improve. And not only in how they play, but what kind of shape they're in." It's no surprise Bochy says this about the rotund Sandoval, but Lincecum certainly isn't a guy that's out of shape. The manager thinks the issue with the pitcher is that cardiovascular fatigue and a lack of lower-body strength are reasons that he sometimes tires after a few innings.
Mark DeRosa (wrist surgery) will begin swinging a bat sometime in September.
"The doctor said I'll be swinging before the end of September," DeRosa said. "Swinging at what capacity remains to be seen." DeRosa said he feels "completely different" after a second operation on his wrist, adding that nothing appears "loose" as it did in spring training and that the numbness is gone. DeRosa should be fine by next spring, but the Giants will probably bring in some insurance over the winter in case he's not ready to start.
