Velez optioned, Renteria to DL, Rohlinger and Bautista up
The Giants made two roster moves prior to today’s game. Edgar Renteria was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to yesterday, with a strained groin. Infielder Ryan Rohlinger was recalled from Triple-A Fresno and should be at Citi Field in time for the first pitch.
The club also went back to a 12-man pitching staff, purchasing the contract of right-hander Denny Bautista. The well traveled reliever pitched well this spring and had a 2.19 ERA among other impressive numbers in 11 games for Fresno (12.1 innings, 8 hits, 3 walks, 15 strikeouts).
To make room for Bautista, the club optioned struggling utilityman Eugenio Velez to Fresno. VP Bobby Evans confirmed to me that Velez had a minor league option remaining.
Velez’s role on the team shrank because of several factors. Obviously, his struggles at the plate and his big drop in left field was a big part of it. But so was the emergence of Matt Downs, who simply has had better at-bats while playing credible defense at second base.
Whiteside is catching Sanchez, as planned. Schierholtz is moving up in the world. Looks like it’ll be a nice night weather-wise in Queens.
