people have to remember that draft picks are somewhat overrated... look what happened last time we stacked up a bunch of draft picks for Gruden... we lost in the super bowl, and our team spiraled downhill for 7 years... finally seeing improvement last season

draft picks can be great... but they can also be worthless

and remember... it's only 2 FIRST round picks if we win a playoff game... if we can win a playoff game with Palmer... I don't think people are gonna be talking about how it was a bad pick

and yall remember when we gave up a first rounder for Seymour? that was a bad pick according to a lot of folks at the time...nobody says that shit now, right?

I do agree we gave up to much... but fuck it... this shows the Raiders want to win NOW... and as a fan I appreciate that shit. they know we've suffered through too many losing seasons, and we can't take another one

draft picks are more valuable then ever now with the new rookie scale. Also don't sleep on next years draft with the most talent in a draft in the last decade. What would worry me about this trade is why the dozen other teams who needed a QB would not pull the trigger on Carson for the amount cinci was demanding, and i disagree with the whole if he wins a playoff game fans will forget. Who's to say Campbell couldn't win one playoff game?? Raiders better hope Palmer wins a super bowl or comes a few inches short from winning one. I dont see a gm/owner making these moves for this year and completely disregarding the future. With all that said though only time will tell if Jackson made the right decision. If it pays off Hue is a genius and will cement his legacy in Raider history, if not this can easily go down as one of the worst trades in raiders history. Just my 2 cents.

I definitely think if we had a GM, then this trade doesn't happen. there were other options to trade for.

anyway, on to the next topic. should we start palmer this sunday? on the one hand he doesn't know the playbook and hasn't practiced with a team all year. on the other, what happens if boller starts and shits the bed. then we're forced to put palmer in midgame into a bad situation? or what if boller lights it up and makes it look like bringing in another qb to start was a mistake, lol?

« FB Reece, TE Boss, LB Wimbley, Kurt Warner weigh in on Palmer tradeDT Seymour, former Raiders QB Gannon on Palmer trade
By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, October 18th, 2011 at 3:54 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Here’s the transcript of an interview conducted by former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon with Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour today on SiriusXM NFL Radio:
Gannon: “Let’s start with [Bengals owner] Mike Brown first and foremost. You know, he gets a lot of criticism for the way he’s run that organization over the years but he does come out, in this situation, like a genius. I mean, I think he showed great patience, he rolled the dice in a big way, had teams not lost quarterbacks or had a real need, maybe Carson Palmer would’ve sat the entire year. I think he kinda dug his feet into the ground and said, ‘Hey listen, here’s how we’re going to do this thing, we’re not going to deal Palmer.’ I think he sent that message out right up to the trade deadline. It’s a game of kind of Russian Roulette and it worked out well for him. To think they could pick up a first rounder this year, a potential first round or second round pick next year, I mean, what a great deal for the Bengals.”

Gannon: “Now, on the flipside, let’s look at it from the Oakland Raiders’ perspective. [Head coach] Hue Jackson goes back with Carson Palmer a long, long way. They were together at USC when Carson was in college, they were together in Cincinnati, they have a very close relationship. My sense is that they were probably talking along the way. I’m sure Carson’s reached out to him for advice. I’m not so sure that Hue Jackson was convinced or sold on Jason Campbell. I think that was an Al Davis deal. Hue was doing the best he could. I think when Jason went down this opened up the door [to the] the possibility that they could do something with Carson. I think they got together as a staff, as an organization and said, ‘Let’s put our best foot forward and let’s see if we can address the quarterback situation for awhile.’ If they bring in Carson Palmer that’s it for Jason Campbell. You’re looking at Carson being the starting quarterback there for the next half dozen years. He is 31 years old, some people feel like his best days are behind him, but you look at what the Raiders gave up, not much of a draft left in 2012. The first four picks are all gone; they only have a 5 and a 6 left. I know there was some talk about they explored the possibility of a potential trade with Philadelphia for Vince Young. In my opinion, this is a much better deal for the Raiders. They get Carson Palmer, he can step in there and start tomorrow, he understands the system. I think this is great news if you’re a Raiders fan.”

Seymour then joins Gannon and his co-host Adam Schein on SiriusXM NFL Radio today to discuss the Palmer trade:

Seymour: “One thing that I can take from Carson is just him being a field general out on the field and his leadership ability to get some interesting guys together and try to get them all on the same page. I really remember him being out on the field and, in a sense, directing traffic, getting guys lined up and putting them in the right position. Obviously, it’ll be a learning curve for him because he hasn’t played football in awhile but I’m excited to have a leader on that side of the ball of his caliber. Anytime you have an opportunity to acquire someone of Carson’s pedigree I don’t think it’s something that you can pass up on. When you look at it, Carson and Hue Jackson’s days, they go back to USC when Carson was the Heisman Trophy winner, the first pick in the NFL Draft and a Pro Bowl quarterback. Just with that pedigree alone I think it brings a lot to what we’re trying to do and I think it’s also a statement from the Raiders in terms of the commitment to excellence. This is just another key ingredient to what we’re trying to accomplish.”

Seymour: “We’re going to welcome Carson in with open arms and have him be a part of the commitment to excellence here. I think this move was just another example of the Raiders’ commitment to excellence.”

On Jason Campbell:

Gannon: “I know this a part of the business but you’ve got to feel bad for Jason Campbell. I know he’s worked so hard at this. I thought he showed great leadership, along with yourself in the offseason, getting the players together to work out. What are your thoughts on what he’s going through right now?”

Seymour: “It has to be tough for him. Jason is a guy I have a ton of respect for. He’s one of the first guys into the building and one of the last to leave. He’s a total team player. Whatever is best for everybody, not necessarily what’s best for Jason, is what he’s all about. You can never have enough guys like that on your team. He obviously got the receivers together to get their timing down in the offseason. So Jason’s still going to be a leader for us and you never know when your number is going to be called in this business again.”

On the cost of acquiring Palmer:

Schein: “You’re a player. You want to win a Super Bowl right now, you want to make the playoffs right now. Do you care about the future necessarily in terms of trading all these draft picks? I’m asking you these questions because it’s part of the story here when you take a look at giving up all the draft picks for next year, when you look at Carson and Pryor and Campbell, you know, you guys don’t have a draft. You came from a place (New England) where they live for the Draft and they were successful stockpiling in the NFL Draft. Does that concern you?”

Seymour: “Well, in my eyes, back when I won the Super Bowl, we won the Super Bowl in 2004. It’s 2011 now so you can have as many Draft picks as you want to and say, ‘I have a good team,’ but at the end of the day, you know, the Packers are the only team that at the end of the day say, ‘Hey, we got it done.’ Obviously, you want to make smart business decisions in everything that you do. I mean, there was a lot of ‘Should they do it or shouldn’t they do it?’ in the process of picking me so it’s always going to be both sides of the spectrum. But at the end of the day it’s what that player does when he gets there that decides: Was it a good deal or wasn’t it a good deal? So, you know, it still remains to be seen. That chapter is still open.”

Here is some early reaction to the Raiders trade of quarterback Carson Palmer from the Cincinnati Bengals, courtesy of NFL Network. Raiders fullback Marcel Reece, tight end Kevin Boss, defensive end Kamerion Wimbley, as well as former Rams/Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner share their thoughts on the bold move.

MARCEL REECE
On what he thinks of quarterback Carson Palmer:

“We’re just so excited. You know of Carson and you’ve seen the success that he’s had in the past, and just ready for him to bring some of that along with him when he steps on the field for us.”

On how quickly he thinks Carson Palmer can step in and play:

“When you think about a guy like Carson, you look at his relationship with coach [Hue] Jackson and the systems he’s been in. Carson is a veteran guy, he’s a very, very intelligent quarterback. And I think coming from a player as well, I expect him to be on the field as soon as possible. You know he’s been working out; he looked great and he can always step on the field and sling that thing. We’re excited for him to get out on the field and we’re pretty sure he’s going to step on and make an impact right away.”

On if he saw Carson Palmer today in the building:

“I did see him today in the building. I just left the building and saw him, and spoke with him for a quick second. He’s in good spirits, we’re all excited and ready for him to get out there and make plays.”

On his conversation with Carson Palmer:

“He was smiling all throughout the building, just like everyone else is. For us, we feel like we’ve brought in a great addition onto this team. Coach Jackson has a tremendous amount of respect and confidence in Carson, and we have all of the confidence in the world that coach Jackson is going to do the best thing for this team, and we feel that he has. We’re all excited about it.”

On if he thinks Carson Palmer is playing this week:

“I think you guys are going to have to stay tuned and wait until Sunday and see who steps on the field. But like I said, Carson is a smart guy; he catches on really quick and us as playmakers just want to get out there and make his job as easy as possible. As players, we don’t expect anyone to come in here and play Superman and save our team because that’s not what we needed. We feel like we have somebody to come in and help us make the plays that we’re going to make.”

KEVIN BOSS
On if he saw Carson Palmer in the facility:

“I saw Carson briefly today in the facility. I was in there just for a little bit. I haven’t had the chance to talk to him yet but we’re excited to have him. It’s never fun to lose your starting quarterback and Jason [Campbell] has been playing really well and he’s been doing a great job leading this offense. But anytime you can pick up a great quarterback like Carson Palmer, a proven quarterback in this league for a number of years now, it’s a good day for our franchise.”

On how long it will take for Carson Palmer to develop a chemistry with the offense:

“It’ll take a little bit of time but I think with the weapons we have offensively – running backs, receivers – I’m hoping that we don’t really skip a beat. Like I said, Carson has been doing this for awhile; a Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback so we’re just excited to have him.”

KAMERION WIMBLEY

On his conversation with new quarterback Carson Palmer today:

“I just walked up to him and welcomed him out here. We just kept it kind of light and we talked about some of the players that we had played with. … I was just telling him welcome back out here because I know he was out here when he was in college and everything. We just kind of kept it light and I told him we were happy to have him out here, and were looking forward to getting started with him.”

On what head coach Hue Jackson is building in Oakland:

“They’ve been putting together all of the pieces that we need to contend for a Super Bowl. That’s our goal; to come here and win, and I think we’re serious about that. Adding Carson [Palmer] to the arsenal I think definitely helps to show that we’re serious about trying to get to the Super Bowl.”

KURT WARNER
On his initial thoughts when he heard about the trade:

“I think initially I was a little surprised. I didn’t think Carson would be playing football this year, but obviously with the injury to Jason Campbell. I like the move. I like the move on both sides. I think Cincinnati has their guy for the future, they’re excited about that; they were able to get some great picks that will help them continue to build that franchise. And I like the move for the Raiders. If you can get that Carson Palmer that we’ve seen in the past – the guy that has the big arm that can make the throws down the field, that can manage the game – you couple that with the defense and especially that running game, I think this might make the Raiders a better football team if we get that Carson Palmer. So I think this was a great move for both sides. I think both sides ultimately will benefit from this.”

On the Raiders trading two potential first round picks for Carson Palmer:

“That is definitely a lot to pay. But as you were just talking about, this is an organization that feels like they’re close. They feel like they can make some noise this year. They’ve got a young football team that can build for the future, and if you can get a guy like Carson Palmer, a guy that’s been a top 10 quarterback in this league for quite awhile, that helps this football team and that changes the complexion of how people have looked at them. Up to this point, it was they have a great running game, solid defense but I’m not sure they can make some noise against the big boys. You get Carson Palmer and you get him back to form, definitely you start to look at this team and there are two sides to the coin on offense. They can bring a lot to the table. It is a lot to give up there is no question, especially with the questions on will we get the Carson we’ve come to know, but if that does pan out I think this makes this team a definite contender.”

On the adjustment Carson Palmer will have to make:

“I think it can definitely be difficult. I don’t think very many people have been through this; I know I haven’t been through a situation like this so I can’t speak from expertise. But the fact of going out on a field and running, or going out on a field and throwing routes to air is completely different than the speed of the NFL. But I do have some experience. I was playing with the Cardinals a number of years back and the quarterback for the Carolina Panthers went down, and they brought in Vinny Testaverde in the middle of the week. He started against us on Sunday and actually led them to a victory. I know Carson is in shape, I know he’s ready to go. I think they can facilitate an offense if they want to put him out this next week where they don’t ask him to do too much – they depend a lot on that running game – but I think it can work. If they decide to sit him for a week and then use the bye week, I definitely think he can be up to speed and ready to go a couple of weeks from now.”

On how far he sees the Raiders going this season:

“I definitely thought this team up to this point was a team that could get into the playoffs. I didn’t necessarily think that they were a contender, a lot because as much as I like Jason Campbell I didn’t think that he was a guy that could carry them if they’re running game didn’t work out. But I look at Carson Palmer, and again there are a lot of questions here, but if he gets back to form and he can be that guy that can win games for you, I think that changes the complexion on how people look at the Raiders. I think then with their young talent at wide receiver and the speed they have there with the great running game they have, they become a team that is a little more scary than they were just a couple of weeks ago.”

true, but there's still ALWAYS the unknown... drafting ANY player is a gamble

What would worry me about this trade is why the dozen other teams who needed a QB would not pull the trigger on Carson for the amount cinci was demanding,
because other teams who need a QB are not ready to win now. If the Raiders were sitting at 1-4 or 2-4, I doubt they make this move... and if they did make this move... it would be dumb. Name me a team who needs a QB that would be a playoff contender simply by adding Palmer... I can't think of any...

and i disagree with the whole if he wins a playoff game fans will forget. Who's to say Campbell couldn't win one playoff game??
maybe... but what's your point?? that's irrelevant because Campbell is likely done for the season, and I don't think Boller was gonna be winning us any playoff games... do you?

Raiders better hope Palmer wins a super bowl or comes a few inches short from winning one. Because 10-15 million for the next three years is no joke!
yeah it is a lot of money, but whatever. it's not my money, and the Raiders ALWAYS seem to have issues with the salary cap... and ALWAYS make it work... that's what they do. if you know the Raiders... you know that shit

Seems like Jackson is making decisions based on a coaching stand point and not an ownership stand point. I dont see a gm/owner making these moves for this year and completely disregarding the future. you're right... it could be bad... real bad. what's worse? a bad trade for a first round pick? or a bad first round pick? (I know it's potentially 2... but you get my point) it's a gamble either way... the fact that Hue has worked with Palmer a lot tells me he did his homework. I love the aggressiveness of the pick.. it's a bold move and it matches Hue's and the Raiders personality right now. I would be depressed if our season went down the toilet due to us not being able to replace Campbell...

maybe I'll be pissed off about this move in a year or 2... but right now I'm excited about this team

n Tuesday morning, Shutdown Corner spoke with Travelle Gaines of Athletes Performance in Carson, Calif., where Palmer has been working out for months. As it turns out, Gaines — who also works with the Raiders in an advisory capacity — was the man the Raiders leaned on to find out what kind of football shape Palmer was in. "He looks great — he's been throwing every day, and working with Ken O'Brien, the quarterbacks coach," Gaines said. "He's been throwing to his good buddy T.J. Houshmandzadeh(notes), working with Terrell Owens(notes) and Hank Baskett(notes). He looks great. I think he'll be ready to go and step right in for the Raiders. He and Coach Jackson have worked together in the past, and they have a great relationship."

Gaines has built up one of the more impressive NFL clienteles as a conditioning coach over the years, and the Raiders asked him to join their staff to play a similar role in the 2011 offseason. That paid dividends when the team starting doing due diligence on Palmer's ability … and availability. "Coach Jackson leaned on me heavily through this process, and they definitely kept tabs on him," Gaines said of Palmer.
Travelle "turtle" Gaines. He use to live around the corner when we were kids. He's doing it big right now...Congrats to him!. He better have had Carson in top shape.

ALOT OF SHIT IS SPECULATION...OBVIOUSLY HUE OR SOMEBODY THOUGHT ENOUGH OF CARSON TO BRING HIM IN...I KNOW HE AINT A SPRING CHICKEN BUT HE ISNT BRETT FAVRE ANCIENT NEITHER...THE RAIDERS OFFENSE ISNT WEAK AT ALL...PALMER IS BETTER THAN TRENT DILFER WAS WHEN HE WON A SUPERBOWL...AND WE ALL REMEMBER DILFER WAS FUNCTIONAL, BUT NOTHING SPECTACULAR...

I THINK BOLLER GETS THE START AND IF HE STINKS IT UP...IN COMES CARSON...
I THINK PALMER IS GOING TO FEEL MOTIVATED...BEING THAT THE RAIDERS ARE BREATHING LIFE BACK INTO HIS CAREER...HES GONNA FEEL LIKE HE HAS SOMETHING TO PROVE...IT ALSO HELPS THAT THE RAIDERS ARE MAKING NOISE...NOW HE GOTS INCENTIVE...GIVE HIM A FEW WEEKS TO LEARN THE PLAYS AND IF BOLLER CANT HOLD IT DOWN...IM SURE PALMER IS GONNA PLAY BETTER THAN OR AS EXPECTED.

Carson Palmer insists he's "fully recovered" from an elbow injury that sapped his arm strength from 2008-2010 and that he is throwing the ball as well as ever.
"I'm healthy," said Palmer. "I'm 100 percent healthy." Former teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who has been working out with the new Raiders QB, also said the zip is back on Palmer's ball. It should be noted that Palmer sold ESPN's Chris Mortensen on his arm being "101 percent" two years ago when it was clear that his velocity and accuracy were off. Palmer's anticipation, release, and football IQ are all top-notch, but we're skeptical that his arm is back to pre-injury precision and strength.

Drafting wisely is how you build a team that competes every year. I don't understand how or why you would mortgage the future on a team that is NOT a player away from going to the superbowl. I personally would be pissed if I was a Raider fan.

Harbaugh and Baalke have reminded us Niner fans why the draft is extremely important and why they said there will be a large emphasis on developing our own players. I completely forgot how important the draft was to Bill Walsh as he would stock pile picks the same way the Patriots do. ALL the best teams build through the draft. Our rookies in Aldon Smith, Kendall Hunter, Chris Culliver, Bruce Miller, etc are already impact players just from the most recent draft and a couple waiting in the wings to take over. You don't build a team for now, you build a team for now and tomorrow.

Would you trade Patrick Willis and Aldon Smith for Carson Palmer? LOL fuck no. I wouldn't trade either by themselves.

we're one of the youngest teams in the nfl. stop acting like the team is a bunch of veterans about to retire. we'll be getting some 3rd round compensatory picks for nnamdi, gallery and miller. so we do have picks this upcoming draft and we've already shown we can eye talent in the later rounds. we've drafted well the last few years and we'll have plenty of picks in the 2013 draft.

So your cool with the team you have now for the next 2 years while every other team in the league finds ways to improve and passes you by(especially teams that are already better than the Raiders)? I'd understand if the Raiders were the Packers, but they aint.

btw I think Carson Palmer is a good choice, but not for the price. Giving up too much and way too risky.

Raiders paid a steep price but I can't lie if I was a Raider fan I'd be excited about this move...

It is a huge gamble though but if Carson can perform anywhere near what he did in best few seasons than he will be better than Campbell and will give the Raiders a good chance to win every game...

You just gotta cross your fingers and hope that he can perform and stay healthy, because if either of those two fail to happen it would be a big set back for your franchise....

Good luck though....

Imagine a 9er vs Raider superbowl... What would be the over/under on lives lost that day in Northern Cali?

Next two years? why would the team stay exactly the same for the next two years? we do have picks and will only be without a 1st or 2nd in 2013. meanwhile our young talent will continue to develop. the team has been getting better week to week. then there's always the possibility of making trades in the offseason, or signing free agents. if you're going to bring up the cap, don't bother. all the "analysts" were saying we were 50 mil over the cap before the season started. we wouldn't be able to sign anyone and would have to cut players and all other bullshit. we end up under the cap just fine, like we always do. there are always ways around it, teams just like using the salary cap as an excuse to not sign talent or to cut players.

exactly

people act like we have ZERO picks over the next 2 years... we have picks... and we will get more through compensatory picks for losing FA's... and I think we'll get a pickof Campbell signs somewhere

and you guys act like we can't sign FAs over the next 2 years... or make more trades... I mean... let's get real... our team is not gonna be EXACTLY the same as it is now because of this move... this move cost us 2 DRAFT PICKS... lol... you guys are overreacting

I do feel we gave up a little too much, but we needed a QB badly... so we went and got one

another way to look at it is. we paid 40 mil and a 1st round pick for jamarcus, now we're paying a 1st, a 2nd/potentially 1st, and 2.5 mil for palmer. all russel did was hurt the team and set us back years. we already know palmer is the best qb we've had since gannon, there's no questioning that. that puts things into perspective.

the Raiders have shown they can find talent in late rounds... damn near more than in early rounds...
for a reason, look @ who was picking the players

shits gonna be different now in raiderland with drafts..... those early picks are more valuable without Al there to pick.....
