Last night, The Source Awards made history in Miami, being the first show since its television debut not marred by violence and drama. With the Fruit of Islam security team and Miami Fire- Rescue department keeping things in check, the 2003 went off successfully with a few hitches and only a hint of tension.

In a spirit of reconciliation and peace, Wyclef opened the show with a band behind him and a plea. "Black on black crime needs to stop, ya'll can't blame it on hip-hop" he sang, reciting the lyrics to "Industry" the first song from his new album, The Preacher's Son.

The show's start was hours behind schedule, though fans in the upper seats remained festive watching some of their favorite artist including Da Brat, 3LW, Lil Kim, Sean Paul, Trick Daddy and others pose and profile in the lower seats. And in the irreverent spirit of hip-hop, one fan did a striptease for the crowd, drawing cheers from the fellas.

The highlight of the show was Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother, who was presented with The Source Image Award by David Mays and Benzino. Other image winners included LL Cool J, Nelly and dancer Crazy Legs.

Another highlight was the presentation of Lil Kim as Female Artist of the Year, which was presented by boxing greats Mike Tyson, Layla Ali and Roy Jones Jr. Tyson took the opportunity to challenge Jones to a fight, which he accepted.

But more notable were the blatant no-shows, which included A-list artists like Jay-Z, Eminem, Dr. Dre and the night's big winner, 50 Cent, who won three awards for single, album and breakthrough artist of the year. His longtime nemesis, Ja Rule, presented the Male Artist Award and accepted the trophy on behalf of 50 Cent in his absence.

The Source Awards 2003 will air on BET on November 11th with performances by Nelly with P. Diddy and Trina, Wyclef Jean and Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz featuring the Ying-Yang Twins who got the show crunk with their signature rambunctious style performing their hit, "Get Low" and other crunk anthems.
