SANTA ROSA (BCN)
Sonoma County authorities said this afternoon that a man shot by Rohnert Park police during a chase on Friday died of a single gunshot that struck his aorta.
The autopsy was conducted today at the Sonoma County Coroner's Office on 30-year-old Terry Lee Grinner Jr.
Lt. Dave Edmonds said the autopsy results are consistent with Rohnert Park Public Safety Officer Jacy Tatem's account of the fatal shooting.
Tatum said he was 10 feet away from Grinner when he shot him in the upper torso. Rohnert Park police said Grinner turned his .357-caliber magnum revolver towards pursuing officers when Tatum fired two shots in the Americana Apartment complex in Rohnert Park around 10:17 p.m.
Edmonds said the lethal bullet entered the middle left side of Grinner's back and traveled toward the right shoulder in a left-to-right, lower-to-upper direction.
He was pronounced dead at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
The shooting came after Grinner fled in his 1999 Volkswagen Passat after a police pursuit that reached speeds between 80 and 100 mph before the car crashed into a tree.
Police said Grinner had a $10,000 warrant for failing to appear in court on felony charges that include kidnapping, domestic violence, unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, battery, sodomy and being a certified gang member.
The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.
