One of the reasons Tupac was such a great artist is that he didn't need features or big time producers to sell records. We didn't care who made Pac's beats at all. Tupac was what we were trying to hear. In fact besides Johnny J and Dr. Dre I can't name any other producers of Pac's. Same thing with E40. I know Mike Mosely and Studio Ton made alot of his early stuff and Rick Rock has contributed but for the most part it doesn't matter who 40 gets to make the beats, I'm trying to hear 40. When an artists gets to a point where people want to hear him on 16 songs by himself then he's done something special.

Just my thoughts

Yup those were the days....Maybe the decline of interest in todays rappers has something to do with that.....I kinda feel that way about Kanye,Im not concernd about his beats as much as I am about him rappin.......same with 40 still like u said....Its up to the rapper to bring the interest back to himself.....Whats that thing called majors used to do?Artist developement....I know thats not done on an indy level so that makes a huge difference.

I understand what you're saying. But to me a producers job is more than just making a beat. The producer also may collab with the rapper come up with a hook for the song or how he think the lyrics should flow. The producers role is just as big as the artists role. That's just my take on it.

this topic kind of makes me think how people are so concerned with sales. like oh how much did so in so sell instead of talking about how dope the music was or wasn't. Rap music or hip hop whatever you want to call it is alot different now and days from when I grew up.

word, I can dig that. but even as a youngsta (and I mean early teens) I was interested in who produced tha track. When I was a No limit head I loved their music because of beats by tha pound. I used to love Kizzo on them early Guce albums. Fig was tha nigga when he used to produce for all of his artists and himself. I like to see chemistry between artists and producers. I think the problem now is rappers arent spending money on good production anymore, they are paying for the name of what producer is popular. Just because they are poppin dosent mean their sound will fit your music.

but thats because 2pac did music because it was his way to express himself with out violence if it felt good to him he would do it... his music was ran on emotions he didn't need a good producer... i mean look at mac dre no one cared either we just loved mac dre!!.

but the producers now days are like your new DJ. Fresh prince didnt go no where with jazzy jeff... jay-z dont go no where with out kanye west, just blaze, timberland and neptunes. producers are the new DJ's

I never paid attention to who produced what until I started maken beats myself...

I mean I have no idea who produced 1/2 of pacs albums before all eyes on me... Even makaveli

I think producers themselfs started really hard to get some shine once puffy and suge knight/ Dr Dre would put there names all over the cd... Then being a producer became cool, and you just didn't play the background no more

When DJ CLUE start saying his name all over them mixtapes then everyone start getting up in them videos thinking they more important than the artist rapping.

The producers need they shine to get $$$ too but them cats then flooded the game and watered it down cause everything sounds the same now. No originality like these groups:

EPMD, GANGSTARR, NWA, A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, BRAND NUBIAN, PUBLIC ENEMY, CMW, etc... all these groups and more had they own dj and own sound. Even when CUBE went with the BOMB SQUAD, he music was different than PUBLIC ENEMY's was.
