no disrespect t-spoon but you can't speak for me. I dig metaphors and punchlines and all that shit too. I just have a broader understanding of lyricism that includes more than just metaphors, multi-syllable rhymes, and punchlines.
my bad aut, i mussa misunderstood u right here:

Im not going to go back and forth on this topic with you. I wish I had the time and patience to educate people on what lyricism is. Until then I can just say you people kill me. Peace.
Believe me, you can leave the Tupac cheer uniform in the closet cuz it's perfectly fine that I share Tupacs own opinion of himself while you believe something completely different. At least you're not putting some fruitcake on that pedestal.

One question though... If you have this higher wisedom of 'what lyricism is', why do you keep talking about metaphors, multi-syllable rhymes, and punchlines? Either I didn't see the post, or you're the only person that has used those words to describe "lyricism".

lyr·i·cism (lĭr'ĭ-sĭz'əm) Pronunciation Key
n.

1. The character or quality of subjectivity and sensuality of expression, especially in the arts.

2. The quality or state of being melodious; melodiousness.
2. An intense outpouring of exuberant emotion.

Of course Tupac wouldn't say that he was lyrical. Leonardo Da Vinci didn't think of himself as an inventor either but he invented the scissors. He was a painter as well but I guess my point is he didn't take himself too seriously. The pre-Death Row Tupac didn't take himself too seriously and was very very humble about his craft. After he signed to Death Row shit changed dramatically. Tupac showed lyrical dexterity, creativity and good song structure most of the time and Tupac could bust a rap on a dumb ass snap beat like Crank That Soulja Boy and overshadow the beat. I guess it was just his flow overall. There are several rappers that have that kind of flow like early Kurupt used to flow like fuck on Dogg Pound songs. Jay Z has a flow that is ill also. I pointed these out so nobody would think I'm a Tupac groupie. I am a fan of the music itself and I have been since it's inception.

If you really believe that then you need to mentally step it up. Punchlines are just a display of wit and it's people who are easily entertained by lyrics who have the amateur understanding of "lyricism". Tupac said on many occasions that he isn't a particularly lyrical dude, he's "just real", and when that's coming from Tupac himself........

It's a shame more people aren't into deeper, more thought-provoking lyrics but then again not a lot of people are real 'thinkers' to begin with.
Yea, Pac wasn't a crazy lyricist...but he was a spectacular poet. In my opinion, of course.

Artists themselves just don't have as much artistic control these days. The label executives (and not just the A&R Staff) sit down at Major Label meetings and listen to the songs, they can tell an artist over and over that song isn't a keeper and you can't use it for the album, or they can tell the artist you "HAVE" to get your lead single from this list of Producers and Produce the artist with a list of approved producers. Label Executives want that known Producer these days. Point Blank. They are charging it to the Artists account anyway.

The only way around the Label picking your Songs, Song List Sequence and Producers is to go into the deal with Leverage. You have to sell ALOT of units independent, and prove that you can pick singles on your own. You have to have BDS that equal to Record Sales and then you have more POWER and can broker a deal that lets you pick your producers and singles. Most of your favorite artists can't even pick the songs that go onto their Cds.

The artists have to get more control somehow someway. Or the glory days are over.
