Chuck Cecil named DC

NASHVILLE, TN, Feb. 12, 2009 — The Tennessee Titans elevated secondary coach Chuck Cecil to defensive coordinator, promoted Marcus Robertson to secondary coach and added Tim Hauck as assistant secondary coach.

Cecil has coached eight seasons for the Titans, starting as a quality control coach (2001-03) and then coaching the safeties and nickel backs (2004-06) before becoming the secondary coach the last two seasons (2007-08). Under Cecil’s direction last year, three members of the Titans secondary (Cortland Finnegan, Chris Hope and Michael Griffin) earned Pro Bowl invitations and the unit collected 19 interceptions for the NFL’s seventh ranked defense.

“Chuck has seen this defense from a number of different perspectives and he is ready for this next step,” said Titans head coach Jeff Fisher. “I felt like continuity at this point was very important for our defense. Jim (Schwartz) and the defensive staff over the last several years have developed a very good system and I wanted to keep as many of those parts together as possible.”

Cecil has 15 years of NFL experience as a player and coach. As a player, he was known for his thunderous tackling and aggressive style during his time as a safety for the Green Bay Packers (1988-92), Phoenix Cardinals (1993) and Houston Oilers (1995). Originally a fourth round pick (89th overall) by the Packers, Cecil earned Pro Bowl honors following the 1992 season. Cecil replaces Jim Schwartz, who left to become the head coach of the Detroit Lions.

Robertson has spent the last two seasons as the Titans assistant secondary coach. Robertson and Cecil are responsible for the rapid development of the secondary into one of the finest in the league. Robertson re-joined the Titans franchise as the Director of Player Development, a position he held for four years (2003-06) after concluding a 12-year NFL career. Originally a fourth round draft pick by the Oilers in the 1991 NFL Draft, Robertson played 10 seasons for the Oilers/Titans franchise and earned All Pro honors for the 1993 season.

Hauck joins the Titans with five years of coaching experience and 13 years as an NFL player. Most recently, he was the safeties coach at UCLA last season and helped the Bruins defense rank second in the PAC-10 in pass defense. Before going to UCLA, Hauck spent four years at his alma mater, the University of Montana, coaching the full secondary in 2007 and three years tutoring the safeties (2004-06). In 2007, Montana ranked 10th nationally in pass efficiency defense while totaling 17 interceptions and allowing only eight passing touchdowns. His 13-year NFL career started as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 1990, and included stops in Green Bay, Denver, Seattle, Indianapolis, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

• Not that I expect any sudden development on this front, but I'm hearing that the long-held notion Vince Young's status in Tennessee is secure because he has Titans owner Bud Adams in his corner might be an increasingly outdated viewpoint. The Titans aren't going to make any move with Young while Kerry Collins remains unsigned, but don't assume Adams is as staunch an ally as has been portrayed in the past.

As much as Adams still desperately wants Young to succeed in Tennessee, Young's continued lack of maturity and unwillingness to buy into head coach Jeff Fisher's team-first approach has eroded some of Adams' support. The owner is said to be more willing to consider the Titans future without Young in it, and that could lead to trade scenarios that were previously thought to be off the table in Tennessee.

Another '06 Titans draft pick who is by no means assured of returning for a fourth season is running back LenDale White, whose role was reduced last season by the emergence of rookie Chris Johnson. While White has promised to commit himself to an offseason workout regime that hopefully will drop his weight from 240 pounds to the range of 230, the Titans still harbor plenty of questions about his work ethic and his maturity level as he enters the final season of his rookie contract. And his killer fumble against the Ravens in the playoffs didn't help his standing in Nashville one iota.

Told you mooreblock.... Vince Young and Lendale White are two overrated Titans. The Titans don't need neither of them. Add another strike to the win column for Tony!

rob bironas locked up

NASHVILLE, TN, Feb. 18, 2009 – The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms today with K Rob Bironas on a multi-year contract.

“We are happy to get this deal done,” said Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt. “Rob has worked hard to establish himself as one of the best all-around kickers in the NFL and I would expect that to continue in the years to come.”

Entering his fifth season, Bironas has become one of the elite kickers in the NFL. Since entering the league, he has become the fifth most accurate kicker in NFL history (min. of 100 field goals made) by hitting 84.5% percent of his attempts. He also ranks fifth in the NFL over the past four seasons with 59 touchbacks on kickoffs.

Bironas etched his name atop the NFL record book for the most field goals in a game with eight against Houston (Dec. 2) in 2007, and appears throughout the franchise record book. An All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection following the 2007 season, Bironas holds the club record for longest field goal (60 yards), most field goals in a game (8), most consecutive games with a field goal (19) and most consecutive field goals (20, tied with Al Del Greco). Last season, Bironas was 29 of 33 on field goal attempts and tallied 127 points. The Titans originally signed Bironas as a free agent in 2005.

Titans running back LenDale White was allegedly involved in an altercation during an incident earlier this month in Denver, but on Monday the city's district attorney refused to prosecute the case. The Denver police department said the case has been reviewed and "is closed." According to a police document where an aggravated assault offense was reviewed, the incident took place on Feb. 14 in Denver when White and other parties were involved in a verbal altercation after a minor vehicle accident. White then allegedly struck Leslie Joe Hoch, a white male. "The verbal argument turned physical and (White) began striking and shoving the victim," the offense report said. According to the report, White, listed as an unknown suspect, "began striking the victim with a belt and belt buckle" before the parties got in their vehicle and fled. Hoch required hospitalization for lacerations, the offense report stated.

they didnt release him...his contract is up and he wants to be the highest paid defense player in the history of the game....something i dont see the titans doing...

hes been the best DT (he played at DE in some packages) in football for the past two years...both contract years...

its been reported that titans stepped up thier offer......haynes would be RETARDED not to test the market and get as much guranteed money as possible (thats just the business side)

id be suprised if haynes is in a titans uniform next season...

that being said the titans should be fine without him....he missed plenty of time (like allways) and our D played great in his absence...we got some very talented young prospects and the best D-line coach in the leauge....

Poor Vince....

Kerry Collins agreed to a new contract with the Titans on Friday after leading Tennessee to an NFL-best 13-3 record last season.

The deal was for two years and is worth $15 million, $8.5 million of which is guaranteed, sources told ESPN.

Coach Jeff Fisher had said he wanted the 36-year-old veteran back. Collins had said he wanted to play again in Tennessee.

"Kerry did a great job for us last year stepping back into the starting role," Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt said in a statement. "He has veteran leadership, tons of game experience and we expect him to continue to play at a high level for us."

Collins has spent the past three seasons with the Titans. He started the final 15 games of 2008 and won 12. That doesn't include winning the season opener when he came off the bench to relieve an injured Vince Young. Collins had an 80.2 passer rating in 2008 that was the third highest of his 14-year career. He threw for 2,676 yards with 12 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. He led three game-winning drives in helping the Titans land the AFC's No. 1 seed and was sacked only eight times.

Collins tied Steve McNair's franchise record with his 12 wins, matching his personal best set in 2000 when he helped the New York Giants reach the Super Bowl. He ranks 14th and is second to only Peyton Manning among active quarterbacks with 37,393 yards passing. He is 11th with 3,160 career completions.

Collins was the fifth overall pick in the 1995 draft by Carolina and signed as a free agent with Tennessee in 2006.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
