The Carolina Panthers have tried to trade cornerback Ken Lucas to the Detroit Lions.

But, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, once Lucas made it known that he wants no part of playing in Detroit, the deal fell apart.

Lucas has a base salary of $5.6 million; cutting him would free up $2.375 million in cap space for the Panthers.

It’s unknown whether the Panthers tried to enlist receiver Steve Smith to “talk some sense” into Lucas.

The New York Jets gave restricted free agent safety Abram Elam the low tender.

The Cincinnati Bengals placed a second-round restricted tender on safety Brandon Johnson.

The Carolina Panthers used a second-round restricted tender on tight end Jeff King and linebacker James Anderson.

The agent for Carolina Panthers unrestricted free agent offensive guard Geoff Hangartner said his client will test the market.

The Houston Texans have a very good tight end. And they know it.

So, with Owen Daniels ready to become a restricted free agent, the Texans has tendered to him a one-year contract that will require the highest possible compensation, if he receives an offer elsewhere that the Texans choose not to match.

According to Adam Caplan of Scout.com, the Texans issued a one-year, $2.792 million contract offer to Daniels.

If Daniels switches teams, the new team will have to give the Texans a first-round pick and a third-round pick in the 2009 draft.

BUCCANEERS $61 MILLION UNDER THE CAP
Posted by Aaron Wilson on February 26, 2009, 3:32 p.m. EST

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers can spend a fortune in free agency to restock their roster, if they’re so inclined, with a staggering, league-high $61 million in salary-cap room, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

The Buccaneers cut several veterans, including linebackers Derrick Brooks and Cato June, running back Warrick Dunn and wide receivers Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard, on Wednesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t far behind Tampa Bay with $57 million in salary-cap space under the 2009 league limit of $127 million followed by the Philadelphia Eagles ($48 millon), the Denver Broncos ($37 millon) and the Green Bay Packers ($34 million).

The teams with the least breathing room under the salary cap heading into free agency right now are the Carolina Panthers ($1.9 million), the New England Patriots ($3.2 million), the Indianapolis Colts ($6.6 million), the Pittsburgh Steelers ($7.4 million) and the Washington Redskins ($8.1 million).

NFL teams were informed Wednesday that the cap was going up $4 million from a previously planned $123 million because franchises didn’t spend close enough to last year’s league limit.

See what happens ****

At midnight tonight, the following players are free to sign with any team they choose. What follows is simply a list of a guesses and/or recommendations, and is not based on any "inside information" whatsoever. On the odd chance that I get one of them right and do not go 0-for-10, I just wanted to have it on record.

Albert Haynesworth:
Washington Redskins. It seems like it's been a while since the Redskins paid an insane amount of money to someone. But if there was ever a guy who was worth it, I think it's Haynesworth.
Or maybe: Tennessee Titans. I think the Titans realize how much he means to them, but I just don't think they'll be able to compete when Dan Snyder breaks out the checkbook.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh:
New York Giants. I think they'd love to have him whether Plaxico Burress returns or not.
Or maybe: Philadelphia Eagles. I know that on paper, it makes all the sense in the world, and I think the Eagles should do it, but I'm just not convinced that they'll spend a ton of money of a free agent wideout.

Ray Lewis:
Baltimore Ravens. Say what you want about Ray-Ray, but he's one of those guys who should just never end up in a different uniform. He is Mr. Raven.
Or maybe: Dallas Cowboys. He's also in very high demand. I could see the Cowboys paying an aging linebacker way too much money becausethey think he'll straighten out their locker room problems.

Bart Scott:
New York Jets. The Jets are going to end up giving someone a lot of money to play linebacker. If the Ravens keep Ray, they may not be able to afford to match a massive offer to Bart Scott.
Or maybe: Baltimore Ravens. I think Scott vs. Lewis is a matter of head vs. heart for the Ravens. The head says it's better to keep Scott, but the heart says it's better to keep Lewis.

Laveranues Coles:
Philadelphia Eagles. He'll be a better economical option if they lose out on Housmandzadeh, and they can still go to McNabb and say, "Hey, look what we got you!"
Or maybe: Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins need receiver help, and you know Laveranues would like to get back together with Chad Pennington.

Byron Leftwich:
Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They've got a ton of cap room, Jeff Garcia isn't coming back, and I think Leftwich is the best option out there.
Or maybe: Tennessee Titans. If they can't work things out with Kerry Collins, it seems like Leftwich could give them at least that level of production, and at a fraction of the money that Collins wants.

Fred Taylor:
New England Patriots. Signing Fred Taylor just seems like a very Patriot thing to do.
Or maybe: Pittsburgh Steelers. I know they were very happy with Mewelde Moore as a backup last year, but I could see Moore being moved into more of a third-down role, and Taylor sharing carries with primary back Willie Parker.
(Edit: Forgot about the existence of Rashard Mendenhall Woopsie daisy.)

Jeff Garcia:
Kansas City Chiefs. If it was up to me, I'd give Tyler Thigpen every chance to win the job himself, but if he can't, it might be nice to have Jeff Garcia around.
Or maybe: Nowhere. Garcia wants to be a starter somewhere, and I don't see a lot of teams who'd want to make that happen. I could see him waiting into the season for someone to get injured, and then signing somewhere as a free agent.

Jonathan Vilma:
New Orleans Saints. The Saints can't part with one of the few decent defenders on their team, can they?
Or maybe: New York Jets. If they do, and the Jets whiff on both of the Ravens linebackers, Vilma's the next best option.

Pacman Jones:
Cleveland Browns. They're perpetually in need of secondary help. Pacman could start there immediately.
Or maybe: Denver Broncos. They let go of Dre Bly, opening up a hole opposite of corner Champ Bailey. Just a thought.

Kurt Warner’s agent, Mark Bartlestein, spent Thursday in Arizona trying to negotiate a deal for his client.

Unfortunately for Warner and the Cardinals, Bartlestein spent Thursday night flying back to his home in Chicago.

Despite face-to-face negotiations, the two sides couldn’t resolve their differences. Now the quarterback will become an unrestricted free agent at 12:01 a.m. ET Friday.

The two sides will continue talking, and Warner isn’t opposed to taking free-agent visits. In fact, he would. But right or wrong, there is a perception that Warner wants to remain in Arizona, which has impacted negotiations.

Now Warner will become a free agent — free to listen to offers from any team.

NO ACTION FOR THE NINERS TONIGHT
Posted by Mike Florio on February 26, 2009, 10:37 p.m.

Though many believe that the San Francisco 49ers need plenty of help at plenty of positions, G.M. Scot McCloughan told reporters on Thursday that the Niners won’t be active participants in the early stages of free agency.

“There will be nothing tonight,” McCloughan said, according to Mike Sando of ESPN.com.

The team will begin setting up free-agency visits right away, but McCloughan said that he plans to focus more on building through the draft.

Per Sando, the Niners will have $25 million in cap space — but that number apparently is based on a $123 million salary cap. It was reported on Wednesday that every team will have an extra $4 million.

Also, the Niners’ number could go up or down (just like, you know, pants) based on likely to be earned incentives not earned in 2008, or not likely to be earned incentives that weren’t were earned last year.

Posted: February 27th, 2009 | Adam Schefter | Tags: DeAngelo Hall, Washington Redskins

As the clock struck midnight, CB DeAngelo Hall struck it rich.

Hall reached an agreement with the Redskins on a six-year, $54 million deal that includes $22.5 million guaranteed and $30 million in the first three seasons.

Agents Alvin Keels and Joel Segal spent recent weeks negotiating with the Redskins and put the finishing touches on the deal as free agency kicked off.

Fred Taylor Expected To Sign With Pats
Friday, February 27, 2009
Posted By Mike Florio 12:02 AM
Former Jaguars running back Fred Taylor has visited the Bills and the Patriots over the past few days.

According to Shalise Manza Young of the Providence Journal, Taylor is expected to sign with the Patriots.

Both teams have made offers to Taylor, an 11-year veteran who was cut as part of a youth movement.

Taylor will give the Pats considerable depth at tailback, if Laurence Maroney can rebound from shoulder problems that wiped out most of his 2008 season.

Jets fullback Tony Richardson signed a one-year deal last year with the team.

And, technically, he became a free agent again at midnight.

But not for long.

Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that Richardson is re-signing with the team.

Richardson spent 11 years with the Chiefs before signing in Minnesota for two seasons. His presence in New York last season surely played a role in the performance of tailback Thomas Jones, who was voted team MVP.
