RAIDERS CUT COOPER, SHUFFLE ROSTER

In trimming six players off their roster, the Oakland Raiders have let go a notable name to fans who appreciate the small points of the game.
Special teams gunner Jarrod Cooper was let go on Monday. Cooper never made an impact as part of the 11-man defense but did a good job of altering field position in an important but often thankless role. The emergence of Tyvon Branch, who can play gunner and has the talent to contribute on defense, made Cooper expendable. He’s expected to retire at 30 after seven seasons in the NFL.
The team waived linebacker Grant Irons and defensive end Greg Spires; and have placed Drew Carter, fullback Oren O’Neal, and cornerback John Bowie (who was acquired with Oakland’s compensation for Randy Moss) on the IR.
Fullback Luke Lawton, who was traded from the Colts to the Eagles this offseason and then released, was brought in to replace O’Neal. But with Justin Griffith at fullback and the team experimenting with moving Michael Bush there, this is probably a temporary stay. Also signed were defensive backs Marviel Underwood and Nate Lyles.
