The racial jokes and the use of the n-word were bad enough. But when a fellow Midas employee hung a noose in the shop's employees-only area, it was too much for Donovan McBride.
The manager would not do anything about it, and the human resources department did not return his phone calls, McBride said.
After he took his story to a local TV station, the noose came down.
Now the shop's owner is investigating.
Hanging a noose is obviously insensitive and should not be tolerated, said Mike Glad, who owns that Midas along with 21 others in the Bay Area.
"You don't want to establish a tone of prejudice in any shape," Glad said from an airport in Chicago. He learned about the situation Tuesday morning, he said, and needed to return to the Bay Area to see what happened.
McBride, a white man who lives in Richmond, said the noose and the racial jokes bothered him, especially because his wife and children are black.
The co-worker who hung the noose, who is also white, used racial slurs more frequently after President Barack Obama invited Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Cambridge, Mass. police Sgt. James Crowley to the White House for beers, McBride said.
McBride complained to his manager, who laughed and walked away, McBride said. He complained again and got the same response, so he called the Human Resources department, which did not respond to his complaint.
Then the noose appeared in the personal area of the co-worker who made the slurs, he said, hanging over the toolbox. McBride took it down, only to find it hanging up again. The noose was not visible to customers.
When confronted about the noose, the manager said that he did not find it offensive and thought McBride should not either, McBride said.
A man who identified himself on the phone Tuesday as a manager at the Midas said he was told he was not allowed to comment.
McBride said he just wanted the noose down and the slurs to stop. When asked if he was considering filing a lawsuit, he said he was talking to a lawyer and "we'll see where we go from there."
Glad said he needs to know why the problem was not fixed.
"I need to get back and find out what happened, and that's to give everybody the benefit of the doubt," Glad said. "I want to see what the breakdown was."

How would you take it if you or a co-worker found/noticed a noose at work? There was a noose found where I work & in my eyes that is considered a hate crime. discuss?
There is no such thing as a hate crime, just crime.

The whole "hate crime" bullshit was manufactured by the left to turn "hate" into a crime. This is just an attempt by the left to control what is socially acceptable via means of legislation which makes them of course evil.

Fuck, "hate crimes" are racist and bias because they serve only to enforce tougher penalties for committing crimes liberals find more offensive then others.

"hate crimes" clearly show how racist liberals actually are.

This is America and people have the right to hate one another for no reason given.

No I don't condone hanging nooses at the workplace.

swoop 187, if there is evidence that someone commits a crime against another, because they don't like the fact the person is a different race, religion, nationality or gay, THEN THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED HARSHER! If I'm walking down the street and attack someone just because they are gay, then I should be charged with a harsher penalty!

Again, there should be evidence though that supports it! These laws were made for a reason... Read your history! My parents, grandparents had to put up with all kinds of bullshit that my kids see less of, because of these laws that were finally put in place...

No they shouldn't.

A crime is a crime regardless, why they commit the crime is irrelevant.

Sorry to fucking tell you we live in America, the supposed land of the free and people have the right to be racist. If you don't believe that then YOU'RE the bigot.

Look, particular special interest groups SHOULD NOT get "extra" protection.

I mean there is absolutely NOTHING "equal" about "hate crime laws"

If I rob and beat a white dude its NOT a hate crime but if I rob and beat a black dude it is just because dude is black?

What type of retarded shit is that?

Robbing and beating a black dude isn't a hate crime. But robbing and beating him simply because he's black would make it a hate crime.
How does one determine ones reasoning for beating someone?

Its easy to label someone a racist and then say "well he did it because he hates black folks"

Furthermore beating and robbing someone is the actual crime, who gives a shit if they did it because they didn't like that person for whatever reason.

Like I said, hate crimes are racist and bias in general for the simple fact NOT everyone is protected by hate crimes.

A hate crime is almost an oxymoron.
