If the 49ers aren't willing to keep A. Smith as a back up if he's accepts a pay cut then he must be garbage
Well the Niners have already said he will more than likely be back if he takes a significant pay cut.

On the poll I voted no, but my reasoning is a little different from everyone else. Shaun Hill needs to be our starting QB, period. We all know Hill is not a good practice player and that's probably why he rode the pine for so many years, but he clearly shows up to play on Sundays and he's a winner. Alex Smith, if he returns, normally looks very good in practice. See where I'm going with this? The fact that Alex Smith was the number one draft pick gives him a little advantage when it comes down to a QB race. Couple that with the fact that Hill is not a good practice QB and we might end up seeing the inferior QB starting next season. That's all bad.

That being said, I'd like to see what Alex Smith can do now that he's taken time and been able to sit & watch the game from the sidelines. He needed to do that from the beginning. All this bullshit about how Smith "cannot make a lot of throws" and "doesn't have a good arm" is pure nonsense. He has the arm, that's not the problem with him. The problem is the game seemingly went too fast for him. He didn't go through his progressions before tossing the ball out of bounds. He didn't take off on the run when he should have. He simply didn't know what to do when the plays broke down.

There are many excuses for Alex Smith and most of them are more than valid. His line sucked, he's still young, he's never had a legit receiver aside from Antonio Bryant, he's had a different offensive coordinator every season, etc.. The one thing about Alex's career that has been constant is Jim Hostler. We all saw how inept that motherfucker was. He was Alex's QB coach from day 1 and then his OC in 07. Nobody knew how bad the guy truly was until he became OC, then it became apparent he does not know what the fuck he is doing.

Give Alex Smith a good coach, a decent line, a legit receiver or two and let him get used to a system for more than a single year and who knows, he might be pretty good.

As of right now though, if he returns, I want him riding the pine.

It's about Alex Smith bro, I don't think you want to read it anyway.

If the font is giving you trouble, may I suggest a new monitor. It looks great on my screen.

I don't like to leave opinions without reasoning.

LOL.

Yeah his accuracy on most of his throws sucked. He would always throw the ball way too low for the receivers. But his scrambling ability and bootlegs helped out the offense. He can stay but the 9ers need another QB besides O'Sullivan.

His accuracy is not nearly as bad as many of you think. It was bad after he got hurt and came back too soon, but before that he wasn't bad accuracy-wise. He can do some things and make some plays, I'd just rather have him as a backup for now until Shaun Hill starts to fuck up (IF he starts to fuck up).

HE WILL FUCK UP! HILL IS GOOD BUT NOT ALL THE TIMES, IF HE PROVED ME WRONG I WOULD LOVE IT, BUT I THINK SMITH WOULD BE THE BETTER CHOICE IF HE GOT HIS SHIT RIGHT

Well Shaun Hill has only looked BAD in ONE game, and he brought us back to win that game. He's never looked bad outside of that game and if we still win, I'll take it.

A lot of Niner fans don't like Shaun Hill for the simple fact that he was a 3rd stringer for years. Like I said before, the reason for that is probably because he sucks ass at practice, but he's clearly very good on the field. Not a lot of QBs performed better than Shaun Hill in the 2nd half of the season. I did the math and in the 8 games he started he was on pace for the following stats:

3,746 yards, 24 TDs and 16 INTs.

In comparison, the following QBs had stats as follows:

Donavon McNabb
3,916 yards, 23 TDs 11 INTs

Brett Favre
3,472 yards, 22 TDs, 22 INTs

Tony Romo
3,448 yards, 26 TDs 14 INTs

Peyton Manning
4,002 yards, 27 TDs 12 INTs

You get the picture. He did well. He always does well. There's nothing that would suggest Shaun Hill is going to fail, but IF it were to happen then hopefully we have another QB at that time who can take over and win games. Whether that QB can be Alex Smith or not is yet to be determined.

good point, but i dont think Hill will take us that far. He hasn't "wow'ed" me besides in one game. and being 3rd stringer has nothing to do with it. i know he plays with a lot of heart, but if he comes in next year and get's us 10 or more W's then you most likely gonna see me with a Hill jersey on lol. But i still think, if we got Smith playing like he should be, he would be a better choice to start.

I honestly think Alex Smith was set up for failure since he came into the league.

I say we keep him, and see how he does under Linehan and hopefully with some stability.

If every QB played "like they should" then every QB in the league would be an all-star.

Shaun Hill is 7-3 as a starter, and every time he's gotten the chance to play he's made a losing team WIN. If that's not enough to impress you then I don't know what is. Hill has less playing time than Smith but plays 10x better. Give him a good receiver and I think he would be able to put up impressive numbers. He's already proven to be a winner, and that should be all you can ask for.

ok "like he should be" was a bad way to word it. let say he picks up where he left off in his 2nd year and improves on that.

but i wanna see Hill do this against some dope ass teams then i'll just shut my mouth. dont get me wrong tho, i'm gladf he's on our team, and i love how he does play with a lot of heart, and does shit to get the respect of his other teammates, i also LOVE that he's so careful with the ball

Don't forget Shaun Hill is a leader in the locker room, Alex Smith is not. Hill has his guys fired up and they all seem to up their games when he's in. His teammates like him and that counts for a lot.

About Alex in 06.. I didn't see anything too impressive. Shaun Hill has showed me more than Alex did in 06. It looked like he could end up being a decent QB, but it didn't exactly look like he was going to be that good. Like I've said before, Shaun Hill has the playing experience of a rookie and will only get better the more he gets to play. He looks very good as it is, but let him play more and I think he'll be a damn good QB.
