That news should get a lot of people at Winter Park fired up, because Smith is one of the players they targeted from the outset. The 49ers were said to be making every effort to ensure he didn't leave without a deal. But he apparently has, which opens the door for the Vikings.

That said, this deal could put a dent in Zygi Wilf's pocket; Smith is said to command $8 million a year, with guarantees in excess of $18 million.

Smith can play both sides and the thinking is he can capitalize on one-on-one situations. He is a energy-player, and, by many accounts, a very likeable person.

5:56 p.m.: Finally, a little news: Justin Smith is still in the Bay Area. He took a helicopter tour of the South Bay this afternoon with Mike Nolan. He will have dinner tonight with Nolan and, perhaps, a few coaches. I just spoke with Smith's agent, Jim Steiner, who confirmed the helicopter ride and dinner tonight. He said he was not sure who would be joining Smith and Nolan for dinner. Steiner said Smith is still "scheduled" to go to Minnesota tomorrow. But it's pretty clear the 49ers are going to pull out all the stops to sign Smith before he has a chance to leave the Bay Area.

Whats wrong with Isacc Bruce? He's pretty old and all but look a Marvin Harrisson!!! I mean HE IS familiar with Mike Martz offensive scheme and so is JT. This is a decent pick up.
