Why would they hesitate? They already tied up a bunch of money in their starter and backup QB this season. What makes you think they won't do it again if Warner wants to come back? Don't forget Kurt Warner put up some serious numbers and helped the team get to the SuperBowl this season, and he was an MVP candidate. I don't think they feel Leinart is ready yet and they really don't have anyone else to rely on.

Former 49ers wide receiver Wilson dies at 81
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3865275&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines
SAN FRANCISCO -- Former San Francisco 49ers receiver Billy Wilson, a six-time Pro Bowler who starred for the team in the 1950s, died Tuesday. He was 81.

Wilson died peacefully in the presence of his family in Southern California after a battle with cancer, the team said.

Wilson led the NFL in receptions three times during his career from 1951-60, retiring with 407 catches for 5,902 yards and 49 touchdowns. Wilson is fourth all-time for San Francisco in TD catches, fifth in yards receiving and sixth in receptions.

"He was one of the fiercest competitors I ever played with," said Wilson's former quarterback, Y.A. Tittle. "He was our No. 1 receiver. Whenever we needed a big catch, I went to him, because I knew he would make the play."

Wilson, who played his college ball at San Jose State, led the NFL with 60 catches in 1954, 60 receptions in 1956 and 52 in 1957, when he was a first-team selection to the AP All-Pro team.

"I remember a play Billy made when he caught a pass, leaped straight up into the air over myself and two other defenders and ran it in for a touchdown," said Hall of Fame coach Don Shula, who was also a defensive back in the NFL in the 1950s.

"It was a great play and he truly was a great receiver. He is one of the few players of another era that would excel today."

Wilson worked for the Niners after his playing career as an assistant coach and scout.

Hue Jackson has second interview with 49ers
http://www.mercurynews.com/49ersheadlines/49ers/ci_11568739?nclick_check=1
Hue Jackson returned for a second interview Tuesday, suggesting that the 49ers' monthlong search for an offensive coordinator might be coming to a close.

Jackson, 43, served last season as the Baltimore Ravens' quarterbacks coach, guiding rookie Joe Flacco into the AFC title game.

He is the second candidate to get a return interview with the 49ers. The first was ex-Rams coach Scot Linehan, who turned down the 49ers' offer and, days later, accepted the offensive coordinator post with the Detroit Lions.

49ers officials declined to comment on Jackson's status, but it might be telling that Mike Johnson, another coach with links to the Ravens, also interviewed with the 49ers on Tuesday.

Johnson, who served as Baltimore's receivers coach in 2006-07, talked to the 49ers about the vacant quarterbacks coach job. Johnson was the quarterbacks coach with the Atlanta Falcons in 2003-05, when he helped tutor Michael Vick to a pair of Pro Bowl selections.

For Jackson, this would mark a third stint as an NFL offensive coordinator. Previously, he guided the Falcons in 2007 and the Redskins in 2003. Both those teams ranked 23rd in the NFL in total offense.

If Jackson does not land the job, the 49ers might still have a few more offensive coordinator candidates left on their short list. ProFootballTalk.com reported Tuesday that Jimmy Raye II, who helped orchestrate the greatest rushing season in NFL history, might interview for the job today.

A 49ers spokesman said he could not comment on the report.

Raye, 62, spent last season as the New York Jets' running backs coach. More memorably, he was the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 1983-84.

During Raye's second season, Eric Dickerson rushed for 2,105 yards, an NFL record that still stands.

In all, Raye has 11 seasons as an offensive coordinator on his résumé, including 2004-05 with the Raiders. He was also in Tampa Bay in 1985-86, when a young quarterback named Steve Young struggled through some growing pains — before going on to become a Hall of Famer for the 49ers.

The eventful day in the 49ers' job search came shortly after news that two previous candidates, Rob Chudzinski and Dan Reeves, apparently landed jobs elsewhere.
ESPN.com reported that Chudzinski was close to being hired by the San Diego Chargers as tight ends/assistant head coach. ESPN.com also reported that Reeves was in line to become a consultant for the Dallas Cowboys.

That would mean that four of the 49ers' seven official candidates have found other employment. Linehan took the offensive coordinator job with Detroit and Rick Dennison returned to the Denver Broncos as an assistant.

In search of a replacement for Mike Martz, the 49ers have also interviewed Colts receivers coach Clyde Christensen and former Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski.

Jimmy Raye is in the building
http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/49ers/archives/019012.html?mi_rss=49ers%20Blog and Q&A
Just when it looks like the 49ers' OC search is about to burn out, they throw another candidate onto the fire. This time it was former Raiders offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, who is currently meeting with Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan.

Raye, 62, has had seven separate stints as an offensive coordinator, including 2004-2005 with the Raiders. One thing that might grab the attention of Singletary, who wants to run the ball in 2009: The Raiders were 32nd in rushing offense in 2004 and 29th in 2005. Raye most recently was the running backs coach for the Jets.

Raye was a standout quarterback for Michigan State in the mid 1960s, leading the Spartans to the Rose Bowl in 1966. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams, who moved him to defensive back. His first offense coordinator job came with the Rams in 1983. Raye was on the same Redskins staff as Hue Jackson, another candidate for the 49ers' OC job, in 2001. The Redskins, led by Marty Schottenheimer that season, finished 28th in total offense and 28th in points. Former 49ers OC Jim Hostler, who was with the Chiefs in 2000, has cited Raye as one of his mentors.

Raye's OC experience:
L.A. Rams (twice - 1983-84, 1991)
Tampa Bay (1985-86)
New England (1990)
Kansas City (1998-2000)
Washington (2001)
Raiders (2004-2005)

Niners hire Raye as offensive coordinator

After weeks of looking, the San Francisco 49ers finally found their man. They hired Jimmy Raye as their offensive coordinator, league sources said Wednesday night.

Raye, a former running backs coach for the New York Jets, beat out candidates such as Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson and new San Diego Chargers assistant head coach Rob Chudzinski.

The 49ers wanted to hire someone by Thursday, when they were scheduled to begin their draft meetings. Now they have. Raye is their offensive coordinator.
