Man Killed In Luxor Parking Garage Blast
Police Shut Down Casino's Parking Structure To Investigate Homicide

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- One man was killed and another person escaped injury in an explosion of a small device left atop a vehicle outside a Las Vegas Strip resort.

Police said the blast was not a terrorist act, but an apparent slaying with an unusual murder weapon. The victim and a co-worker who was nearby were employees at the Luxor hotel-casino.

The man was fatally hurt when the device exploded as he removed it from atop a car a little after 4 a.m. on the second floor of the parking structure behind the Luxor. Police said initial reports that it was a backpack were wrong.

There's not much damage around the vehicle, and the hotel and casino were not evacuated. The Luxor's a pyramid-shaped hotel at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip. It's owned by casino giant MGM Mirage, which is not confirming that the man who was killed was an employee.

Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents are involved in the investigation.

Haha...I remember when they did a Fear Factor in Vegas, where they had to slide down the Luxor pyramid and collect flags.

UPDATE-

Investigators are looking at hotel surveillance videotapes for clues in the death of a man in a parking garage outside the Luxor hotel-casino.

They say the man worked at a business inside the hotel, but was not an employee of the Luxor.

He was killed when a small device exploded as he removed it from the top of his car early Monday morning.

Police are describing it as a murder with an unusual murder weapon. They believe the man who died was the target of the attack, and they're not treating it as a terrorist act.

They're also dismissing suggestions that the slaying is linked to organized crime. Another person who was nearby escaped injury.

One person is dead after an explosion in the parking garage at the Luxor. On top of that, authorities found an unattended bag in the Sports Book -- so as a precaution the area was evacuated but that situation is now under control.

Meantime, the investigation continues after a device exploded in the on the top level of the Luxor guest parking garage. Two people walked into the garage around 4 a.m. One person was a male, and police say he noticed a strange device sitting on his vehicle. When tried to remove it that's when the device exploded.

Police said it was a small explosion but that man was injured and later died at an area hospital. The other person with the victim, police say, was not harmed and is being questioned.

Officer Bill Cassell, of Metro said, "There has not been a threat to the Luxor, it's business as usual there it appears that the victim in this event was the intended target."

Homeland Security, the Joint Terror Task Force, and ATF are all investigating. They'll be coming through the top level of the parking garage for evidence. And anyone parked up there will just have to wait till the scene is cleared. Right now the investigation is in its preliminary stages, so authorities aren't releasing more details. But a release is expected later this afternoon.

A spokesman for Luxor released a statement a short time ago:

Early this morning an incident on the top level of the 2-floor Luxor public parking garage took the life of one person. Police have announced this is not a terrorist incident and are investigating the incident as a murder investigation targeting a single individual. Police do not believe the resort was targeted in any way. No facility damage occurred to any part of the Luxor as a result of the incident and the resort is conducting normal operations.

The incident took place just after 4:00 AM. Local and federal authorities are investigating. The victim's identity has not been released. The victim was not an employee of the Luxor.

The Luxor public parking garage is partially closed during the investigation but all other aspects of the resort are open. Cars parked in the garage are being released as investigators inspect them. The garage is expected to open as soon as investigators finish their work.

Agents Can Get Fingerprints Off Parts of Luxor Parking Lot Bomb

There is new information about the man killed in that bomb blast at the Luxor on Monday. Family members confirm the victim's name. Antonio Willebaldo-Dorantes is from Puebla, Mexico.

The 24-year-old worked at Nathan's Famous hot dog restaurant in the hotel's food court. Tuesday morning his family visited the Mexican consulate for help in making arrangements for the funeral. Family members were visibly still shaken over the murder as they walked away from the consulate.

They did not want to go on camera, but told Eyewitness News they are making arrangements for Willebaldo-Dorantes' body to be shipped back to his hometown. They hope investigators can find out who set the bomb.

As those arrangements are being made, Metro investigators along with federal agents examined the evidence collected from the Luxor parking garage near the explosion. They will continue to look for who wanted the 24-year-old dead and why.

Dorantes had just gotten off work. He and a female friend walked into the upper level of the parking garage around 4 a.m. Police say and sources at the MGM say that Dorantes noticed a cup sitting on the roof of his car. When he reached over to pick up, it exploded.

Dorantes was badly injured and died a short time later at the hospital. Shrapnel from the bomb hit other nearby cars, but luckily the woman with Dorantes was not hurt.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the Clark County coroner reported that Willebaldo-Dorantes died from a penetrating head wound.

ATF special agent Tom Mangan says they learned more about the device. "We are very happy with the post blast investigation with the amount of components we have been able to recover," Mangan said.

He says investigators pieced together most of the bomb. Sources say it was in a cup sitting on top of Dorantes' car. Mangan confirmed it was detonated by motion, meaning the bomb went off when Dorantes picked up the cup.

ATF special agent Mangan says the components of the device can lead investigators to who put it on the roof of Dorantes' car. "It gives us certain clues to who constructed it. It gives us clues to the way it was made up. The way it was designed."

ATF agents can actually get fingerprints off parts of the bomb with specialized equipment. Mangan says the bomb blast was equivalent to a stick of dynamite. Pieces from the blast will now be sent to a specialized lab near San Francisco.

Deputy Chief Ted Moody with Metro Police says they believe he was targeted and that they are also reviewing surveillance video.

"There is video in that lot, and we're still in the process of trying to determine what if anything is contained on those videos will be helpful to us in our investigation," said Moody.

So far, police aren't talking about a motive. They say this is still a very active investigation and among other things, they are trying to reconstruct the bomb to get clues.

An autopsy was conducted on Dorantes' body Tuesday morning, but the results from the coroner still aren't available.

So far, law enforcement agents aren't saying if they have any suspects
