HELENA, Mont. —

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was arrested Friday in his Montana hometown of Great Falls on burglary and drug possession charges, police said.

The circumstances surrounding Leaf's arrest were not immediately clear. Great Falls Police Sgt. Dean Bennett, who confirmed Leaf's arrest, said Friday night that he had not seen a report detailing the allegations against the ex-football player.

Leaf was booked on felony charges of burglary of a residence and criminal possession of dangerous drugs, plus a first-time charge of misdemeanor theft, Cascade County Detention Center Officer Robert Rivera said.

Leaf was freed on $76,000 bond and is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Monday.

Leaf, a former standout quarterback for Washington State, was the No. 2 pick in the 1998 draft behind Peyton Manning. But Leaf flamed out as quarterback for the San Diego Chargers, gaining a reputation as one of the biggest busts in NFL history.

There is no phone listing for Leaf in Great Falls. A message left at his parents' house was not immediately returned Friday night.

Leaf released a statement through his publicist, Wendy Ogunsemore on Friday night.

"I've made some mistakes, and have no excuses," the statement read. "I am using the tools I've learned to move forward rather than backwards, and will be open to talking about the details in the days to come. I am confident that there will be further understanding when the facts are revealed, and feel very blessed for all of the support, especially from my friends and family."

Last year, Leaf had surgery to remove a benign tumor from his brain stem and later underwent additional radiation treatments.

On March 21, Leaf told an Associated Press reporter in an email exchange that he had struggled through treatments and had an MRI scheduled for the end of the month, but "I'm doing/feeling much better and am excited for the rest of 2012."

Friday's arrest also raises the question of whether his arrest means the 10-year probation plea agreement he negotiated with Texas prosecutors stemming from drug and burglary charges in 2009 will be revoked.

James Farren, the Randall County district attorney who negotiated the 2010 plea agreement, did not immediately return a text message seeking comment on Leaf's arrest in Montana.

In 2008, when Leaf was a quarterbacks coach for Division II West Texas A&M, he was accused of burglarizing a player's home. An investigation turned up that Leaf had obtained nearly 1,000 pain pills from area pharmacies in an eight-month span.

He resigned that year, was indicted in 2009 and the next year pleaded guilty to eight felony drug charges. Besides the 10 years' probation, he was fined $20,000.

Last year, he authored a book titled "596 Switch" - the name of a passing play in the Washington State playbook - that focused on the 1997 season when he led the Cougars to their first Rose Bowl in six decades.

LOL this dude got arrested AGAIN two days later

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-s...316796.html;_ylt=AtWB7kAQNVnZTSpHPIqrkR05nYcB

Just two days after being arrested for burglary and possession of drugs, Ryan Leaf has been arrested again. Showing the kind of consistency he never did as a professional quarterback, the most recent arrest was, once again, for burglary and possession of drugs.
Details of this most recent arrest haven't been released, but the good news is that he can't do it again. He's being detained this time on a violation of his probation.

The second-overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, Leaf's history of abusing prescription drugs is long and, evidently, ongoing. In 2009, Leaf was charged with breaking into a home, and seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud. He was eventually fined $20,000 and sentenced to 10 years of probation.

All of this came after Leaf's very short, very unspectacular professional career. In 1998, Leaf was thought to be the equal of Peyton Manning as a quarterback, and there was much debate over who would be the better professional. Manning will eventually be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Leaf retired at the age of 26, having played just three years in the NFL with a quarterback rating of 50.0. And the unfortunate truth is that his NFL career may have gone better than his life after football.
With the draft approaching, it's a fascinating cautionary story. Even with all the research, background checks and preparation teams do, there will still be major, major personality problems that won't show up until after a guy is drafted. They might not be this severe, but they'll be there.

Anyway, Leaf Is still out there somewhere, still trying desperately to get things figured out. We wish him the best. If there's ever been a cry for help, it's being arrested for an attempt to acquire prescription drugs illegally, being released, and then pretty much immediately doing the same thing.

APNewsBreak: Warrant sought for Ryan Leaf’s GPS

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=Av1OIFYLaojI9Kxl948XYSw5nYcB?slug=ap-ryanleaf-arrest

HELENA, Mont. (AP)—Montana police say they are seeking a warrant for the GPS in Ryan Leaf’s pickup truck to get information that will link the ex-quarterback to two break-ins and possibly lead them to a stash of stolen prescription painkillers.

The former NFL quarterback is accused of breaking into homes on Thursday and Sunday and stealing prescription medication. He was due to appear in court Monday afternoon.

Central Montana Drug Task Force Commander Chris Hickman says Leaf broke into a home outside Great Falls on Sunday, just two days after he posted $76,000 bail for his first arrest.

Hickman says the owners returned home Sunday afternoon and found Leaf inside. Leaf told them he had the wrong house, and the owners later discovered three bottles of prescription pills were missing.

this is really sad, Leaf had come on the radio and apologized to all charger fans and the orginization. He took ownership of all his mistakes and admitted that he was an immature piece of shit. He sounded genuine and really looked like he was turning his life around. This guy has issues, this has gone from a disgrace of a player to just a sad story.
