I have this student that is in first grade, almost in second and has the intelligence level of a three-year old child. He only knows about half of the letters of the alphabet by sight and several letter sounds he cannot even pronounce.

However, another student is working on her beginning letter sounds of words. She is doing the letter 'H' and one of the pictures is of a garden hoe. When asked what it was, she said a hoe. This other student, the one mentioned above, says that she said a bad word. I had to explain to him that a hoe is a garden tool. Then I said, "You don't even know all of your letters, but you know what a hoe is." Fucking incredible. He must know what a hoe is because his mom is one.

He IS in a special program with me. But soon, he will be in one of those all-day special ed classes. And by the way, his mom is mentally retarded and not much more intelligent than her child. But she sure as hell knows how to keep making more babies with many different men.

damn, people think its the schools letting kids down, but its the parents. Parents just don't give a fuck! Learning begins at home.

its a mean mean world. lol. and this tells me your a fucked up teach. but thats also a fucked up mom.
What makes me a fucked up teacher? Because I tell it like it is. Because I don't try to sugarcoat the truth. That's just how the world is. I'm not going to sit there and tell a child who is about to go into second grade "It's okay that you don't know your alphabet". But I do feel sorry for the kid because he will most likely grow up to be retarded like his mom and uncle and the rest of his family (it's in their genes).

My complaints are never about the kids. Kids are a result of their parents.

Here is what the same student said TODAY:

My aide was working with another student and used the example "The plane flies HIGH in the sky". Well, this first grader says, "You get high? You get high?" My aide and I both looked at each other and started laughing. So this first grader knows the derogatory meaning of the word "hoe" and "high", but does not know his letters. Amazing.

Parents need to take responsibility. School is there to teach the kids, but parents need to develop and guide them.

It's sad how some kids are never given a chance because their parents can't or won't help give them opportunities to learn and grow.

I don't give up on the kids, no matter what. I was talking with the Assistant Principal today about the things he has been saying in class, including the statements "I hate white people" (he says this to my aide who is Mexican) and "My mom says you don't like me because I am black". Despite all of this, the Principal says that he has made a lot of improvements the little time he has been with me and his speech has become clearer and more understandable. But I still don't know what the fuck this kid says half the time.
