the kid probably had no preschool either....I think preschool should be a free service widely available to all children
i agree w/ you %100!!!

my niece is already at a 3rd grade reading level and she's only in 1st grade. She would have left me in the dust back when i was a 1st grader. SHe's doing an unbelievable job in school and preschool had a major influence in that plus my teachings as an uncle(we're very close). Preschool is a must nowadays.....the children get a head start with numbers, the alphabet, and they get a feel of what school is like at an early stage.

I have this student that is in first grade, almost in second and has the intelligence level of a three-year old child. He only knows about half of the letters of the alphabet by sight and several letter sounds he cannot even pronounce.

However, another student is working on her beginning letter sounds of words. She is doing the letter 'H' and one of the pictures is of a garden hoe. When asked what it was, she said a hoe. This other student, the one mentioned above, says that she said a bad word. I had to explain to him that a hoe is a garden tool. Then I said, "You don't even know all of your letters, but you know what a hoe is." Fucking incredible. He must know what a hoe is because his mom is one.
i feel you bro. i used to work with pre schoolers now i work with middle school students. both inner city schools. and its fuckin sad the way alota these kids are raised. with the preschoolers, there was this one kid who would go around calling kids "faggots" and his personal favorite "muthafuckin ass hoes", and telling me how he smoked weed with his grandpa (4yr old). and though i had a great time with him and he was my personal favorite student, i can only imagine what his future is gonna look like. with the middle school kids, theyre just fucking lazy. they dont want to learn shit. one kid was trying to get me to tell him an answer to a test..."what is celbrated on the 4th of july". this fools 14 years old!
but to me the underlying source for these kids...i hate to say it, but its the media. that shit is really turning their brain to mush. there are alot more elements in our society that contribute to this, but rap and tv is the most immediate one ive got from them

I still think parents come first....my mom would borrow friends addresses so I could go to better schools....but also people are a product of their environment, if all the schools are run down with underpaid teachers and nothing to provide for the kids, both the teachers & the kids are not going to want to be there....piedmont high & oakland tech are less then a mile away from each other, but i'll bet you the differences in the pay rate of teachers & equiptment are unbelieveable....money needs to start with the inner city schools then trickle out to the better cities, because the people with money can always afford private school.
