I sold 5 units. Today. But it aint even nite time yet. J/K

100,000 for WC Mafia? Which album justr hit that. I woulda figured Bo was hittin 250,000 every time. I know my folx on tha block out here in AZ bang that Bo and Tay shit.

I like the theory stated earlier... As long as you makin profits on top of the cost.

1,000 units can be a success depending on your initial investment and expenses...

I think too many people are goin for the "homerun" while singles & doubles are just fine for me.. :)
exactly, B-12 had a small article about this n murder dog before. Everything has to be proportional to what you spend, and the time invested. Example, Micheal Jackson sold 2 million copies of his invinceable album, but that wasn't shit because they spent so much putting it out there, and it was micheal jackson afterall. But if you make an album at home, and sell 1000 on consignment and walk away with 8 bucks each cd.....do the math. that is a success. You will likely not have too many expenses if you only press up around a 1000 cd's. Like it's been said, most people have other jobs, on top of rappin.

It also depends on what you define as success. I have said numerous times, rappin is not now, and will never be a career for me, even if i never record a track, or i sell a million. I have much love for music, and would do it for free to be honest unless i became so well known i couldn't go to the store and buy milk, at that point, i would want a lil bit of somethin to be able to show for my liberty being compromised. I used to write shit in high school, and people would be singin my melodies and lyrics in class, when they didn't hear it directly from me, and that was a great feeling. Success to me, would be to cross someone on the street while i'm driving, while they are bumpin my music singin along with the words. That's my input on all of this even tho i haven't sold any albums on it. Much luck in the new year. stay up

________________

yup people have different definitions of success

some people consider breaking even a success... some consider losing a lil bit but getting positive feedback from the loss a success...

summer times = good street sells, plus we let many ppl sell our shit on the streets and we take peanuts fo rthe cds but wut that does is recoups sum of the cost and builds the buzz for the stores so they start ta sell more units and that is where you get paid, so the old formula use ta be sumin like that but now whut ppl do is when they get it cheap on the streets or hear it they juss go download it....but sum dont , more ppl dont have net access than many think........usually sounds scan for us is about 60%-75% of sells........but you never know really its alot things factored, like distro, and promotions and availabilty

going off somethin robb said that i agree with. it depends what level u on...i meanu cant compare a artist with a lil local fame or somethin to somebody like C BO.....C BO has a established fan base that started in early 90's, so u cant expect to do what he do till u put your dues in the game. pushin a 100,000 on the first or second time...u'd be a bad man.

its not easy....success is spend 1000$ on ya pressing(1000 copies), selling copies of your cd for 5 or more bones. guaranteed 5000$ and up....the first round....then next round when ya next drop u press up double what u did the time before, and this time u droppin cds off 8$ and up a piece....

i jst wanna say props to thefolks that is doin they thang hittin the streets sellin shit theyself. muchlove.....u gotta think if these cats sold 750-1500 units....theywent thru 434,373 " no's", "im straights", "thats aight", "im broke", "maybe next time", "where can i get it at later" and a thousand other excuses......so much love for stickin wit yo grind, thats the real shit...that there might measure your success.

I think it also depends on the area that you are selling music in...Like if the average cat in the Bay sales 2,000 units per project ((I know they don't but for the sake of the story lets say they do)) and you SCANNED 5,000 units sold then you know your ahead of the game and record companies and or investors will look at your 5,000 units as an achivement...But in the South an indie may sale close to 15,000 units and be considered o.k. compaired to there other artist who average 35,000 units sold per project...I see people keep throwin out one-hundred thousand units like that shit is easy to pull off as long as you put in some hard work...look at it like this, all of Keak's albums put togeather (I ain't talkin about 3X; solo) prob. ain't eclipsed 100,000 units sold...and he is handlin his business...when you do the math though Keak is killin the average artist in the Bay on units sold...I said all this to say don't let the #'s fool you be proud of ya shit, be happy wit every unit sold-build a solid fan base and your sales will go up...

PEACE

The whole climate of indi music has changed, and it is harder then ever to sell big units unless you are already established with solid distribution. MOving 5000 units nowadays is a great success, considering that it is very hard to get your projects in certain retail spots that used to order considerable numbers.

However, the streets is the key to success today. If you are planning on moving nice numbers of an indi project, you are going to have to hit the streets, sell CD's at shows, and wherever you can get someone to spend some money on your music. The market is so cluttered, and distribution is very faulty right now.

There are only a few indi's out here that are still moving those 10000+ numbers, and those are the labels like West Coast Mafia and a few others. If you are really planning on selling units, you gotta get out there in the field, or you'll be sitting on some boxes of your indi project.

1000 units is a success if you actually get 1000 people to purchase the project. And like a number of people said, it's all relative as to how much money you invested in the project.
